Gandhi's Passion: The Life and Legacy of Mahatma Gandhi

From Publishers Weekly

Wolpert, a professor emeritus in South Asian history at UCLA, is well versed in the politics of India and has written numerous books on that country and its neighbor Pakistan. His new work is not so much a book on how Gandhi came to be the Mahatma, or India's "Great Soul," but a chronicle of India's independence movement after WWI and the communal violence that led to the 1947 partition along religious lines. The most absorbing part of the book shows how Gandhi's legal training at Inner Temple in London and his work to protect the rights of Indians in South Africa at the turn of the century led to his agitation for Home Rule in India. Wolpert skillfully uses Gandhi's own writings there are 90 volumes of his collected works and descriptions of meetings and travels to organize mass passive resistance, including boycotts and marches, to explain how Gandhi's nonviolent resistance, or Satyagraha, essentially forced the British to grant dominion status to 300 million Indians. However, Wolpert does not convincingly illustrate how Gandhi came to believe in nonviolence and how he transformed himself from a rich Anglophile and lawyer into a near-godlike figure who valued equality, self-control, celibacy and the relinquishing of wealth and desires. Wolpert touches on the fact that Gandhi's transformation alienated his children and wife (whom he married at age 11) even while he expressed an "intensely personal passion" for various Western missionaries and forced some ashram devotees to sleep by him naked. By supplying more detail than useful analysis, Wolpert's effort is ultimately disappointing, and, in the end, Gandhi remains a recognizable but cryptic figure. Wolpert (South Asian history, emeritus, UCLA) has written biographies of Indian freedom fighters Jinnah (Jinnah of Pakistan) and Nehru (Nehru: A Tryst with Destiny). While his life of Gandhi is well written, one has to ask why yet another biography of the Father of India? There is no burning issue or question that he raises, nor a great new insight into Gandhi that has not already been discussed in previous biographies. In the introduction, Wolpert notes that the news of the nuclear explosions in India in 1998 prompted him to undertake this book on the apostle of nonviolence. What he has produced, however, is yet another general biography of one of the most remarkable men of the 20th century. Only libraries collecting in depth on India need consider this title, which does not supplant Gandhi studies by Erik Ericsson, Louis Fischer, or B.R. Nanda. I had never read anything about Ghandi so I was very interested in learning more about his life and political career. The book was very well written but at times did come off as a bit of a "hero-worship" effort, discussing but downplaying Ghandi's very strange relationship with his wife and often tumultous relationships with his sons. The author does give a very detailed account of Ghandi's efforts and the incredible challenges to overcome during the 25 years preceding India's independence in 1947, providing a lot of detail on the political players and the British viewpoint throughout the years. Recommended highly for anyone who has an interest in understanding this very unique historic figure.

Overwhelmed by the hundreds of books already available scrutinizing, criticizing and or eulogizing the controversial life of Gandhi, Wolpert's dilemma when he thought of writing a book about Gandhi was what would he write that others have not written yet. Nevertheless, after so much introspection he has decided to write this book tempted by the significance of Gandhi's teachings in the wake of India's nuclear test of 1998. But, unfortunately, his attempt is falling woefully short of providing any new information on the life of Gandhi or is unable to challenge a critical mind on the life of one of the great and yet controversial figures of the 20th century. In his work, Wolpert portrays a dutiful Gandhi of esteemed ideas and vision. But by often succumbing to Gandhi's saintly aura, Wolpert is unable to provide valuable insight from a historian's perspective on the circumstances and events leading to the spiritual development of Gandhi that we saw in him starting in South Africa, a topic that not many historians (may be except Judith Brown) tried their hands on and succeeded. Without any analysis of that sort, his work is nothing but yet another addition to the mundane category of political biography of Gandhi.Contrary to the popular belief that Gandhi is the culprit for the partition, Wolpert has given many proofs from history for how the partition could not have been avoided despite Gandhi's many overtures and thus was absolving Gandhi completely from the crime. While that should be the right thing to do, Wolpert is also pointing out Gandhi's reluctance to listen to C.R. Das's (one of Gandhi's staunch supporters) candid and most plausible plea to Gandhi to accept Jinnah's proposal and work towards a peaceful partition. Gandhi who knew British's indifference to India's plea for political reforms after the First World War was not quite optimistic nor was he willing to sway from his stubborn position on the idea of unified India. Then at the end, Gandhi was completely sidelined by Nehru from the final politics of Mountbatten and was not even been consulted for his advice on partition. Wolpert could have done an excellent comparative study on the positive impacts of a partition with the whole Muslim population transmigrating leaving India's fate in the hands of its Hindu majority who nonetheless is the true denizen of the land. None of the historians I know have used this lost chance judiciously in repudiating Gandhi for not having taken that stance when Jinnah could not be budged from his insistence on partition. The partition should not had to be bloody had the leaders of both India and Britain shown more patience and done more planning. Though the freedom may have come late, the constitutional method for achieving India's freedom would have been less bloody.Another `failure' that is blamed on Gandhi and which Wolpert roughly touched on is his handling of his family affairs. When he was trying to bring up a whole country in line with his principles, doing anything contrary for his children would be very un-Gandhian, and none can deny the fact that he loved all his kids and given basic education and support. One has to look into the details of the events leading to the alienation of some of his kids before putting blame on Gandhi. Wolpert having surely known some of these events has not attempted to put blame on Gandhi. In his wife's case, Gandhi had given complete liberty for her to break away from him if she chosen so. Kasturba, being an illiterate and having nothing to stand on her own, have nothing else to do than supporting her husband. It was too late by the time Gandhi realized that a man devoted to the service of people should never have a family or indulge in pleasures.Gandhi had many qualms for western civilization but was not quite so for industrialization. What he against was machines stealing the jobs of millions of India's idle hands. He found imperative that these idle hands had to be employed first before bringing in machines. In fact Gandhi said that he was not against machines and would welcome it for anything that is beyond the capacity of people. He was wary about accepting a civilization, of which industrialization is a part of, that was (still is) in it's infancy in the place of a seasoned civilization that is thousands of years old. Gandhi's was a vision in which everything had its own time and place. For him one step at a time was good enough.Even for freedom, Gandhi gave a proper time and place for its happening. He asked what difference it makes whether India is ruled by British or Indians as long as both have little knowledge of the real problems of India. Gandhi had a clear vision of India's future where both India and Britain work together as equal partners in a commonwealth enterprise not in a system of masters and slaves. Jalianwala Bagh massacre, Rowlatt act and the atrocities that followed in Punjab made him realize that British was not willing to see India on par and there started his opposition to the crown. Wolpert is unable to substantiate this most crucial transformation of Gandhi's political life that had had far reaching repercussions in the India's freedom struggle. On the controversial topic of Gandhi's experiments with girls, Wolpert is groping in the dark unable to grasp the spiritual and psychological connotations of such experiments. One would have to believe that Gandhi never had any physical relations with any of his female disciples because none of the historians have made any indication on the contrary. In Manu's (one of the girls with whom he slept) book on Gandhi too she considered him only as her own `Mother'.Wolpert's work is not devoid of blemishes either. He seems to have mistaken the meaning of Surendranath (in Hindu mythology it means king of all skies) as `Surrender Not' while referring to Surendranath Banerjea, a foremost political leader of British India. The fact is `Surrender Not' is the nickname that the British had given to Surendranath Banerjea (because Surendranath sounded more like `Surrender Not' when pronounced by the British) for his steadfast support for political reforms in British India. On another occasion Wolpert erroneously assumed Gandhi a true nationalist as early as in 1905 while referring him for indirectly supporting the British rule in the West Bengal by the statement Gandhi made in which he said it was the responsibility of British to quell the communal riots that broke out in Bengal in the wake of the partition, than blaming British for the partition itself. Gandhi considered himself as a true British loyalist as late as 1919 and on no account his loyalty to the crown had ever been questioned as early as in 1905.Topics on Gandhi should not have to run out especially when our world is in such a sad state of affairs (I am not trying to be cynical here) in spite of all the `advancements' we made. What we need is a new generation of writers who have gone through the effects of modern wars, proliferations of nuclear weapons, impact of globalization, disintegration of morals, effects of depletion of natural resources, environmental pollution, economical imbalance, starvation of millions etc. to take a fresh look at his teachings and interpret them in the context of aforementioned impacts in the world. Gandhi said that so much advancement is made in the field of `violence' and equal amount of advancement could be made in the field of `non-violence' also. What Gandhi did was laying the foundation of that institute. Sadly, in the last 50 years since his death, not many studies have been conducted in that institute.Despite its cerebral shortcomings, Wolpert's book on Gandhi could be recommended for anyone who is looking for a rudimentary introduction to Gandhi and the struggle in which he was part of during the early 20th century.

A very informative book about the situation in India under colonial rule and what Gandhi eventually accomplished. He gave up a life as a member of a rich family and shared with the poor. His concern was especially to lift up the Untouchables and free India to become an independent country. At least some parts of the world have changed for the better since he was arrested in South Africa because he was "colored".

Somewhere in the present time, we have lost the lesson that Gandhi lived - not to mention Dr. Martin Luther King. This book describes Gandhi as a simple man who was human - but with a vision and commitment that he just wouldn't let go of. Where is that commitment now?

This book is the most definitive one I've read on Gandhi. His incredible life and works were amazing. I learned a lot about this long suffering, compassionate man, who with all his faults, was a force for peace in this world.

It was nice to know that Gandhi was not a perfect human being. He was not born poor even if he did run around wearing nothing but a sheet and spinning cotton. You still have to admire the man for his tenacity. He was very determined to make life better for the down trodden and he suceeded. It took many years for his great skills to flower into the person he became. A great lesson is that it takes a life time to become a great person. There is no instant gradification that people these days demand. It will take you a life time. When you train and dog or a horse also, by the time it is trained, it is ready to die.

Reinforced Gandhi's passion for peace. Didn't realize his formal background and education. It shed light on the religious passion and stubbroness of Hindu/Muslim relationship.

The book seems rather repetitive going back to events and ideas several times. I usually enjoy historical books, but found it was hard to sustain my interest. Much of the content did not flow smoothly.

I agree with the other reviews.

Although I've been playing guitar for years, this book is a real challenge for me. I'm determined to work it from the first song and not move on until I've mastered each piece. I've had it for a couple of months and I'm on song number three. The other 5 star reviews speak accurately about the significance of the music and the transcriptions and CD are a good value. If you are learning finger style blues or just need the tab to play it, then you should buy this book.

I was interested in learning the guitar style of Mississippi John Hurt after checking out one of his CDs (Satisfied Blues)from the library. The CD did not come out of my CD player for over a month, and I felt driven to learn his style. This book was extremely useful in helping me learn this style. I have had the book about 4 months and can play about half the songs. The learning process involves following the tab and listening to the CDs over and over. The first song I attempted to learn (Spikedriver's Blues)took some time and a lot of patience. You have to learn to play the alternating base while putting in the melody lines. Now that I have practiced his style for four months, many of the other songs are coming much easier. The book includes the lyrics, so that after learning the song, one can practice singing over the guitar. I have been playing guitar 17 years, and haven't found a particular style that sucked me in so much. The CDs that accompany the book are excellent as well, and include some songs which I haven't found on many of his popular recordings. The songs are excellent. I actually practice more guitar each day, because of this style and this book. I bought an instructional DVD for Mississippi John Hurt as well, but use this book far more often.

When a guitar player hears Mississippi John Hurt's playing athey are generally struck by the simple beauty of it. To master the Hurt style is quite complex, but this book with its combined CD's (which feature MJH himself!) offer a good roadmap for unlocking the style of this master. Definitely not for the beginner, but one great feature is the way the tablature is presented. It is large and easy to read. To me, this makes a world of difference when attempting to learn a new piece using tablature.

this is a great cd/book combination to learn some wonderful blues tunes. the book is well written and the tablature is very easy to follow. the music isn't easy to play, but it's very well written and anyone who puts their mind to it will be playing some of john hurt's great tunes. the best part of the combination is the cd's. two cd's covering each tune in the book and all done by john hurt himself. it's a great way to learn or just listen. highly recommended.

Higher Education in America: Revised Edition (The William G. Bowen Series)

Review

"Magisterial."---Stanley Fish, New York Times"[Higher Education in America is] a magisterial yet often contrarian assessment of challenges facing university governance, teaching, and, indeed, survival."---Jim Sleeper, Huffington Post"A thought-provoking book that defies political stereotypes. Because of its nuances, the book is a refreshing change from the openly hostile diatribes attacking higher education in recent years."---Peter Sacks, Minding the Campus"Bok draws on the latest empirical research to set the record straight about systems of governance, undergraduate education, doctoral programs, medical schools, law schools, and business schools, teaching, research, and tenure, tuition, financial aid, affirmative action, the role of government, inter-collegiate athletics, online education, for-profit institutions, and what he calls 'matters of genuine concern.' Comprehensive, judicious, probing, and immensely informative, written for students, parents, and taxpayers as well as 'insiders,' it is one of the best books to appear on this subject in decades."---Glenn Altschuler, Huffington Post"Monumental. . . . [Bok's] assessment is measured and clear, and we may confidently refer young academics and administrators to Higher Education in America as a primer on current affairs."---Mark Bauerlein, Weekly Standard"A detailed progress report on the challenges and opportunities facing our nation's colleges and universities. . . . Competition among schools produces benefits and causes problems. Most of the important ones are addressed in Bok's helpful volume. I hope he is right that we already have the ingredients in place to make the necessary reforms. I know we need university leaders like him to help activate those ingredients so that American higher education can continue to contribute in vital ways to our culture, our economy and our polity."---Michael S. Roth, Washington Post"In the past few years, UK government ministers have paid a lot of attention to the American higher education system, and some new ideas introduced in England, at least, have come directly from the US. Higher Education in America, written by a former president of Harvard University, serves to highlight the similarities between issues we face in the UK with those in the US. . . . Easy to read and comprehensive. . . . A useful overview of the state of US higher education in the early 21st century."---Mary Stuart, Times Higher Education"Hold on to your mortarboard; [Higher Education in America has] got five fat sections on the state of instruction at the undergrad then graduate level, with umpteen analyses of market forces at each turn, plus five forewords and four afterwords! Despite this daunting breadth, Bok keeps it real."---Katharine Whittemore, Boston Globe"One theme that I found particularly useful in Higher Education in America is Bok's treatment of undergraduate education and curriculum. Bok underlines the value of a broad university education at every level--for the individual, for the business who hires him or her, and for the society. . . . The book is worth reading carefully by faculty leaders and university administrators as they make their best efforts to enhance the educational effectiveness of their programs."---Daniel Little, Understanding Society"Derek Bok asks all the right questions about higher education, and his experience, research, and staggering intelligence pervade every page. The real value here lies in Bok's thorough examination of some of the most urgent challenges facing higher education--and in his spot-on recommendations for what needs to be done to address these concerns. This is an important book for both academics and families looking at a future in higher education." (Grandparents.com)

From the Back Cover

"This is an exceedingly ambitious book. In fact, I know of nothing remotely comparable to it in scope or scale. One of its many refreshing aspects is its unfailing common sense. Bok presents the most balanced account of American higher education that I know of, stating clearly the many things that are right about it, but also highlighting problems and challenges. He has an unerring eye for the right 'big questions,' and readers of all kinds will appreciate his focus on these questions."--William G. Bowen, president emeritus of Princeton University"Informative, provocative, and engaging, this is a very important book that should be of great interest not only to those working in higher education but to everyone else who is concerned about the future of America's colleges and universities. Its value lies in Bok's thorough analysis of some of the most urgent challenges facing higher education--and in his recommendations for actions to address them."--James J. Duderstadt, president emeritus of the University of Michigan"This book is like a very thorough checkup of a patient by an expert physician. Bok inspects nearly every major organ of the U.S. higher education system, provides a carefully balanced report on each, and concludes that the patient is in good overall health but showing signs of misuse and neglect in certain parts. The book includes exceptionally valuable observations about the system's strengths and weaknesses--and about remedies for some of its problems."--Steven G. Brint, vice provost of the University of California, Riverside"This is a major contribution to the literature on American higher education. It provides unusually comprehensive coverage and addresses controversies in an exemplary manner, fairly representing different positions and relying on empirical research to reach conclusions. I think this book will have a broad appeal throughout higher education. I can envision most administrators having a copy on their bookshelves, a ready reference and guide for their own pronouncements on the state of higher education."--Roger L. Geiger, Pennsylvania State University

The first few chapters give a very informative overview of the major segments of higher education: community colleges, comprehensive universities, and research universities. However, after that, things get less concrete. I felt that the sections on graduate education mainly dealt with issues and not a good overview of the institutions, and I felt his statements weren't grounded in fact--it was a lot of "it could" and "maybes". I also had issues with some of his characterizations, like the only use for a PhD is to teach, or that "pure research" means writing articles with lots of citations. Also, he doesn't tie everything together until the afterword, which, in my opinion, doesn't allow thorough treatment of the issues he brought up, and doesn't occur until I've waded through 20 chapters. In short, I find the section on undergraduate education well worth reading, but I think it loses value after that.

Derek Bok is a positivist writing to the postmodern world of higher education. He firmly believes that there is an objective truth about colleges and universities, and he is determined to martial every ounce of empirical evidence to prove this. His scientific beliefs are in a higher education that he imagines as beautiful and deserving of love. And his affections are not blind. He details every disfigurement. The book's strengths are in the sections on undergraduate education and professional education. The center of the story is the tension that is mounting around the need to improve the quality of undergraduate instruction. His evaluation of professional schools and how they balance the demands of the academy with the demands of the profession is masterful. (Plot spoiler alert.) Medical schools are given high marks and business schools are found lacking. The weakness of the book is the Steinbergian view West. His core audience is the Northeast, but yet when he speaks of the needs to improve quality (learning and instruction) and quantity (enrollment and graduation) in higher education, he gives the elite selective schools the principal's hall pass. His view seems to be that the real job of educating America will fall to comprehensive colleges that are in a distant land beyond the Charles. Other than a fanciful idea about "admissions lotteries" for selective schools, he makes no real attempt to call for collective action by the Eastern elites. This is unfortunate, because he might be one of the few voices that has the strength to do just that. (His best opportunity in the text is missed in his chapter on "Graduate Education.")At times, Bok sounds like he has entered the muddy trenches of Midwestern administration when he rails against NCAA athletics and unhelpful competition created by magazine college rankings. But his chief credential is that he was President of Harvard. Were these ever his daily concern? What seems clear is that he has attempted to expand his audience, while still writing for the Crimson Choir. The language at the end of the book is wistful and yearning. He counsels future academic administrators "to do what they can with carrots and sticks" (p.405). His real audience that he attempts to reach is the collegium of faculty across America. This is where he seems to have placed his faith and hope for the future of higher education. And this is probably as it should be...trying to reach the people that love education, and not just care about it.

I ordered this textbook for a Higher Education Administration course and I used this text as a reference constantly. Although I didn't agree with all of Dr. Bok's views but he is very knowledgeable about higher education.

This book was required for a course. It was interesting to read about the history of college education in America.

Kindle version is cheaper, but does not show page numbers, only locations. Purchase for class only if you have no hoping of citing quotes from this book!

Very much an academic polemic. Author tackles all of the variations of higher education, to such an extent, including the professional graduate programs, it can be overwhelming to absorb. What were the author's main criticisms? Has accessible higher education for the masses benefited both individuals and society too? No doubt the usual post-secondary baccalaureate degree is not the best fit for all adults. Ironically, as the land of second chances, sprinkled with the continental ideal of a universal education, the U.S. remains committed to this approach.

This book turned out to be something other than what I expected. As context, I grew up in Boy Scouts and have always been enchanted by nature, and I now study the natural world for a living. So a book called "How to Read Nature" got me excited to learn about "how to read nature".Unfortunately I don't think I was the target audience. This book is 90% motivational speech, 10% "how to read nature". The motivational speeches are great, and he is completely correct about the value of getting your head out of the sand and starting to pay attention to the natural world around you. But it became tedious to continuously read that same speech re-told in different ways over and over. I wanted more meat I could sink my teeth into, actual concrete specifics for how to read nature. General guidelines are provided which can be applied in any location all over the world, but they are fairly obvious and not that helpful to someone like me. At the very end of the book he provides a bibliography to other works with more specifics (I assume). That was probably the most valuable part of the book for me.The goal of this book is to inspire people who don't spend a lot of time observing nature. The problem is that those people aren't likely to read it. With a title like "How to Read Nature" it is attracting a different audience, one like me who already loves nature and would like to learn more about how to actually read it. That wasn't what I got.I appreciate the author and his passion for the subject. I feel a sense of kinship to him for this. I certainly couldn't have written a better book (and he is indeed a good writer). The title is simply a bit misleading, probably not on purpose though.

Felt like preaching to the choir. After reading the book I do not know ' how to read nature ' any better than before I read the book.

For those who wish to deeply commune with nature, this book is excellent. Many of Gooley's recommendations are akin to what I did while hunting some 40 years ago in Montana. Hiking is insufficient for elk, deer, and antelope; but hunting awakens latent senses. Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset said that “Man does not stalk in order to kill, he kills in order to have stalked.” It's a feeling of being more fully alive. Gooley does not send readers stalking, but his suggestions can generate the same keen sensitivities. Suffice to say that the book makes nature ever so much more exciting and delightful. I must add that my daughter bought the book and literally field tested on her two young children. The results confirmed my expectations. My only criticism is that Gooley does occasionally take too long making his case

As with all School of Life books, this little volume is a fine introduction to its subject, written on a distinctly individual & personal note by someone passionate about it. In this case, Tristan Gooley is our guide to getting out of the house -- and, more importantly, out of the housebound, man-made frame of mind -- and rediscovering the natural world. For all of our technological expertise & "development" -- what a ghastly concept! -- of the wild, it's the natural world that's finally real, far more real than our artificial environment, however comfortable & sometimes necessary it may be. We need to be reminded of that ... and the best way, really the only way, is to get out there ourselves,But merely walking through the natural world isn't the same as being in it. I've seen all too many people walking in our local parks, immersed in their devices, getting nothing out of it but the exercise they could just as easily have gotten on a treadmill. No doubt you've seen the same thing. But if you put away or do without devices, if you actually take the time to experience the natural world -- sights, sounds, smells, sensations, memories, thoughts -- it doesn't take long before you're in a different mode of time & being. And as Gooley notes, it can just as easily be in a park, or even your own yard, as in the actual wilderness. The key is attention: slow, measured, open to the experience. And for those who are more adventurous, he offers exercises & possibilities on a larger scale as well. Start small, go far ... and you can go far in a small space, as Thoreau understood. But start. That's the single requirement. For anyone who finds the man-made world "too much with us" -- and isn't that just about all of us, at one time or another? -- this little guidebook is most highly recommended!

The author says on page 141-142 that our body temperature fluctuates by 34 degrees in a circadian rhythm. It certainly does not!! We'd be deader than a door-nail. No proof-reading?

The natural world is full of wonder if you just look around. This book is about slowing downand finding amazing things all around you no matter where you live our travel. It is a newway to look at everything you've been missing.

As with any School of Life book, it explains simple concepts that you already know, but don't practice. This book in particular explains why we love nature and just helps you appreciate even more.

Informative and instructional with a bit of entertainment. Many lessons are wrapped into this book. I only wish that I had the time to make all of the noted observations a sort of second nature for myself.Good podcast featuring Gooley at Art of Manliness which I heard several months after reading a couple of Gooley's books.

Review

In this fourth edition, Rubin excels at providing everything working library professionals and those desiring to become library professionals need to know. This text could be considered the librarian's Bible, as it is so comprehensive in its coverage of the profession. Rubin's relaxed and conversational writing style makes it a highly approachable text and a valuable addition to any professional resource collection, library and information science classroom, or personal reference." --Voice of Youth Advocates"Well informed about the latest developments and issues in the field ... LIS faculty who teach introductory courses in LIS should consider assigning Rubin's text as the primary reading. No textbook can perfectly match every instructor's desired learning outcomes, but this one may serve well with just a few supplementary readings." --American Reference Books Annual"Continues to deserve its place in the required curriculum of many American MLS programs ... in its latest edition, [it] lives up to the broad expectations set by its title." --Against the Grain

I was assigned the Third Edition (2010) of Richard Rubin’s textbook Foundations of Library and Information Science for a course in my first semester of a Master of Library Science degree program. Anytime I see the word “Foundations” in a textbook title I prepare myself for a yawnfest. The word usually signifies a broad but shallow overview of a subject that cursorily and dryly touches on a lot of topics without providing enough detail to render any of them interesting. Not so with Rubin’s book. It provides an excellent overview of the library and information sciences and does so in an engaging and stimulating manner.LIS is a pretty diverse discipline, encompassing a lot of occupations and areas of scholarship, but Rubin manages to give them all their fair due. He provides a comprehensive overview of this broad field of study, but also succeeds in exploring the subject in satisfying depth, delving into matters of both theory and practice. While I was reading the book, every time I thought to myself, “but what about this?” sure enough, within a few pages Rubin had answered my question. The writing is crystal clear and concise and doesn’t put the reader to sleep. In fact, his text is often engaging and inspires enthusiasm for the profession. Although the intended audience is students just starting out on the road to librarianship, Rubin’s take on the profession is neither pat-ourselves-on-the-back congratulatory nor rosily optimistic. He gives a balanced perspectives on the pros and cons of library work and doesn’t shy away from discussing the challenges librarians face in the Digital Age.The organization and design of the book is very user-friendly, with lots of helpful lists and tables. The text is logically subdivided under multiple levels of subheads, making it easy to find or refind what you’re looking for. I could likely use this book as a reference for every paper I write over the course of my masters program, if for nothing else than to consult its lists of sources and selected readings. I rented this book, but I wish I would have bought it. Too bad its so pricey. I would gladly buy an e-book edition, if the publisher would make one available.

I was the only one in my class to read the whole book over the summer. I learned a lot but felt silly when I raised my hand and no one else did. Yes, I'm a geek.

Neal-Schumann books hold the market on Information and Library Science textbooks and during most of my MLS classes, very few of their books were digitally available, so I got the HC textbook. I got a very good price here at Amazon compared to the school bookstore, and the used textbooks are generally in pretty good shape at Amazon so I always check here for textbooks. The book itself was thorough, although class lectures largely addressed the same content. My main complaint is the very small typesetting and much of the information in this authors' textbooks is repetitive - which makes some sense for introductory classes but there was a fair amount of overlap, I didn't end up using the actual textbook that much as the content was largely covered within my other classes that semester. Might be of more use if you are taking one class per semester instead of a full courseload.

Had to buy this for school for a Masters program. Usually I would consider renting books. But this one I am glad I purchased. Rubin does a good job giving a well rounded view of the past, present and future of the Library professional. It is an easy read and not overly technical like some. The references to scholarly journals in each chapter alone are worthwhile if you need more info on a particular chapter topic. Glad I purchased this one. I know I will go back to it for reference.

Standard well-known textbook for MLIS and some library tech classes. I covered my paperback copy with book tape because you will be referring to this book a lot during your studies.

The book was helpful because it was a required text for my course. However, I give it three stars because it was sticky and I had to wipe it clean. Another drawback is you can't highlight or make any notes in the book.

had to have this for school. it was okay. i would say for the subject matter, it was pretty easy to read and had enough flow and design so you would not get bored.

It's a textbook, great. No really it is a nice resource, my prof thinks it's a little outdated even though it is the current edition but I don't mind it at all.

In his 20s he was forcibly committed to San Francisco’s public mental health system, and, while in the locked unit at Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute, he was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder schizophrenia and put on disability. Then I wanted to be a biologist, then I wanted to be a psychologist, then I wanted to be a community organizer, then I wanted to be a philosopher. Now I’m sort of all of them.” — Will Hall interviewed in the Portland Mercury newspaper

This is a brilliant, simply extraordinary book. Will Hall's worldviews regarding mental health suffering, wholeness, recovery, and thriving are seminal and next-paradigm. I am recommending this book to people in the peer/recovery movement all over the country. Run don't walk and buy this glorious collection of voices from the social justice movement in mental health. I am so grateful to Will for his work of the last decade: he is helping to save the world, one brilliant, vulnerable, powerful human being at a time.

I did not expect to feel the way I did about this book: when I began to read it I quickly realized that it shared the voices of people I had desperately needed to hear. I appreciated the diversity of experience and opinion represented in these interviews and essays, and was especially moved by the essays written personally by Will Hall. Someone I love has lived with a schizophrenia diagnosis for many years. Having been a witness to this experience from its inception, and having had to negotiate my own way through it, I am now waking up to different perspectives. Over the years I have seen the ways in which the medical model has failed us, despite the dedication, skill and best intentions of the medical professionals we have encountered, and despite the help of psychiatric medication that is sometimes needed. This book offers thoughtful reflections on experiences of reality that are too often dismissed as symptoms of mental illness. It is a gift to those who would not otherwise be exposed to views outside of the conventional mental health paradigm, and that includes most of us, particularly in the USA. I am deeply grateful to Will Hall for this book and for his work as an advocate, educator, and therapist. We need these voices and visions in communities everywhere.

This is a really great book. It brings to light many issues with our current psychiatric system, including forced institutionalization and medications and medical abuse. But it is a hopeful book - it makes me feel like there is definite hope for recovery and that it is possible to live a good life while struggling with extreme or altered states (usually called psychosis).

I desperately wish I and my family had this book when I was diagnosed Bipolar (ne manic-depressive) in 1989. Now an expert by experience in psychosis and in the medical model of mental illness, I have been on meds for my entire adult life. Nobody went to bat for my visions and experiences, they were always something to be fixed. Until now.Mr. Hall has assembled an important collection of essays and short histories which argue fiercely for a more modern and humane approach to mental crisis. His personal journey and journalism acumen both usher a wide range of perspectives into a coherent whole. From dissenting Big Pharma insiders like Gary Greenberg and Robert Whitaker to pioneering voices researcher Eleanor Longden, from short poignant vignettes of oppression to inspiring examples like Finland's Open Dialogue success, Outside Mental Health gives me language and support for arguments I have wanted to make with my doctors and family but never been able to.I've studied "mental illness" and consensus mental health for twenty-five years. I feel more understood and humanely seen in the past two days reading this book than in years of memoirs, DSMs, neuroscience, psychotherapy, and crisis after crisis. Mr. Hall writes "I was pulled between two worlds, the world where I knew what was true, and the world where my truth was just a sign of illness..."I am far better equipped to begin living my truth than I was before reading the gift that is Outside Mental Health.

This is my first book review, but I just wanted to say it's one of the most important books I've ever read. If anyone has experienced an extreme state, they'll get something of value from this book. And that's an understatement.

I recommend this book to everyone. My so called delusions of the monitory psychiatric system were true!We will heal. We can change the world to a better place.

Made me think. Like the format. Beautifully written. Daring.

This compilation book of short essays and interviews is a labor of love by many lesser known names working to bring about mental health reforms who merit more attention. The realm of human experience encompasses a lot and the complexity of the brain is beyond true understanding. Given these realities, the field of what constitutes accepted parameters of sanity becomes quite fascinating as it really delves into time, place, intersectionality, politics, psychotropic drug policies, economic motivations, family dynamics, allopathic medicine, sociology, psychology, and more. "Outside Mental Health" is a great primer and conversation starter for how much else can and needs to be said about the current, prevailing practices of psychiatry that publicly tends to promote easy answers and quick fixes, yet glosses over true root causes and more sustainable methods of wellness. Congrats to Will Hall and to Madness Radio for getting this conversation going!

Shadowrun 3rd edition was the last RPG I played before taking a break from the hobby for about a decade. I've now bought the SR5 core book and played a couple of sessions. My initial, cursory impressions:As always, the Shadowrun setting is one of my favorites: a combination of cyberpunk and magic. If you're looking for Neuromancer meets Necromancer, Shadowrun is the standard. And as always, the wide variety of gear, weapons, and avenues for character improvement - cyberware, bioware, spells, foci, super-cool guns, etc. - is great. (Of course, this is also the reason SR has always appealed to powergamers, but that's another story.)In physical terms, the core book is well put together: massive, with good artwork, slick glossy pages, fold-out art, and story insertions to provide local color. It tends to "sprawl" here and there, with information on a single topic appearing in several different areas. This is a classic element of SR sourcebook organization, so it's no surprise that it's still around, if a little toned down. However, there are too many errors. Not errata, rules that need to be changed; errors, things that should have been caught in proofreading. (Like a citation for the cost of fake IDs directing the reader to page 367 when it should be page 443.) As a former copy editor, I know that manuals are much harder to proofread than, say, novels or articles; but for that reason, good proofing is much more important, because there's less context to guide the reader. (And citation proofing is especially important in as discursive a rulebook as this.)Shadowrun's game mechanics have always been famously (or notoriously) complex. That's both more and less true in SR5. On the positive side, the rules for deckers/Matrix play have been dramatically simplified and made more playable since SR3 (as far as I can tell - I couldn't even read the SR3 Matrix rules without falling asleep). Now deckers can "brick" weapons and be much more of an on-site presence than they used to be. My GM didn't even have to run a decker as an NPC - one of the players chose to be a decker. (Old SR hands know how rare that used to be.) On the negative side, combat rules involve a lot of unnecessary rolls that could be unified into a single test, simplifying game play and speeding up the resolution of big combat scenes. Also, the "Edge" attribute, meant to represent a character's luck, "hot hand," "on the ball" quality, is too powerful. Using the "blitz" option for Edge during combat, our decker got to react even before our weapons specialist, who has level-2 synaptic boosters. (For those new to SR, this would be like the Matthew Broderick kid from WarGames getting into a shootout with Wild Bill Hickok, shooting first, and winning.) If you're playing a campaign where there's one or two combats a session, that drastically weakens the biggest advantage of any 'wared combat type.Another, more minor, quibble is with Ares weapons. In SR3, guns manufactured by Ares Macrotechnology were sort of the white bread of weapons: widely accessible, widely used, but neither the best nor the worst bang you could get for your buck. You knew that you wouldn't make a terrible choice if you bough an Ares Predator Heavy Pistol (for instance) but there were more interesting, dangerous, and/or limited options out there. Ares was the default. In the current rules, Ares isn't the default - it's simply the best option. The Predator is better than its nearest rival, the Browning Ultra-Power; the Ares Alpha assault rifle is better than any other except the Yamaha Raiden, which isn't available to new players (and it has a grenade launcher the Raiden doesn't); Ares even makes the best light and machine pistols. Maybe future supplements will restore the gun balance. It would also have been nice if the (admittedly good) concept art pullouts had included maps of the Seattle metroplex and North America, to orient new players. The final, most subtle, and most difficult issue is the Shadowrun universe. Back in SR3 days, there were half a dozen interesting, hinted-at conspiracies: What was going on in Tir na nOg (formerly Ireland)? What's the deal with dragons and elves? This dragon has become president! Now he's assassinated! What happens next? But you can't run a game universe for more than a decade and still keep it in roughly the same place. All of these mysteries had world-spanning scope and consequence - but if they were to be fully played out, it would mean massive, unpredictable changes in adventure settings and scenarios. The (completely understandable) result has been a game world with lots and lots of huge, important events in its timeline...but that has somehow stayed essentially unchanged (with the exception of ghouls and wireless technology).So...there it is. Shadowrun is worth playing, and the SR5 core book will become even more useful as the errata and sourcebooks on things like adept powers and new weapons emerge. For people happy with an earlier edition of SR, I'd say wait a little bit until SR5 is more fully supported; for those thinking of playing for the first time, I'd say it's a good game, a lot of fun, but be sure your group can commit to the game mechanics of this complex system.**************************ETA: I've now had some time to review and use the current edition of the rulebook, and I have to remove *at least* one star from my review. Here's why:1. The organization of the manual is actually more scattered and user-unfriendly than I thought at first. It's not uncommon to have to jump to three different locations in the manual to find all the information you need on a particular subject. On the same lines, the citations and the index have more mistakes than I thought at first. Add this to the difficulty of the rule system, and you can have new players hold up the action for ten or fifteen minutes, looking for the info they need. (My GM, who has been playing Shadowrun since at least the Second Edition, believes that the quality has diminished since the FASA team left active development of SR.)2. Although the manual is physically impressive - as I mentioned above - it's also very heavy, making it hard to use easily and carry to and from games. It's also unacceptably fragile: I actually saw a couple of pages come loose from the binding in my GM's hand. This is really shoddy for a newly printed book. With all of this in mind, here's my current, REVISED recommendation:SR5's setting and character options are still terrific; we just finished a fun session. If you decide to play the game, don't get the expensive, real-world book; buy the e-book (when available), which won't fall apart on you and makes finding the right information much easier. (Search Function, anyone?) Also, if you're going to be old school and use real dice (my personal choice) instead of an electronic dice simulator, get a block of 12mm (NOT 16mm) dice with rounded edges. You roll a lot of six-sided dice in SR, and this is a necessity. And finally, raise your voices - for a better organized, better produced, better proofread manual. Let Catalyst know that shoddy is NOT acceptable.SECOND ETA:I've also found that the prose can be confusing, leading to legalistic debates - for instance, using game terms without defining them. And, for those folks reading reviews, I have a suggestion: Ignore those reviews written within a week of receiving the book. Only trust the reviews that were written after a few weeks or months of game play. Why? Because initially, the book looks very good; it takes a few weeks for the flaws - poor binding, poor organization, poor prose - to become obvious.THE LAST ETA [I HOPE!]:I'm adding this final edit to describe something that happened during game play yesterday; I'm doing it because something comparable will probably happen to you if you play Fifth Edition.Midway through the game, I discovered that I would have to use something called a "physical limit" during some activities that didn't involve gun combat (my character's strong suit). Physical limits are the maximum number of hits your character can roll for some physical tasks. So these limits are clearly pretty important. Fair enough; I looked up the "Limits" section to find out how to derive my physical limit from my character's physical attributes. It wasn't there. So I went where the Limits section told me to go - page 51, the "Attributes" section. It wasn't there, either. So I went to the index to look up every place in the book that uses the word "limits" - no joy.THIRTY minutes of leafing through the sourcebook later, and in the middle of the game, I finally find out how to derive physical limits. It's in a single table in a subsection of the Character Generation chapter entitled "Final Calculations." I found it through sheer luck. There were only 3 players in the game who knew its location before I did: one is a lawyer; one is the game master; and one is a guy who's read the manual cover to cover at least three times. There was no obvious, easy way to find this very important rule. The same thing happened, during the same game session, with the rules regarding armor and spirits - a very important armor rule was hidden in the "Materialization" section of Critter Powers.Sorry, guys at Catalyst Games - this isn't acceptable. Better editing. Better proofreading. Better organization. Better production values. Simpler game mechanics. More thought to world improvement. If these issues aren't addressed, I'll vote that we turn back to Third Edition, not forward to Sixth, if our group moves on from SR5.

Let me just preface this review by saying I love Shadowrun and have enjoyed playing since 2nd edition. I would give the setting 5 stars, but the book itself suffers quite a bit.So, Shadowrun is a cyberpunk roleplaying game utilizing 6-sided dice to determine the results of your actions. Think Bladerunner with typical fantasy characters (i.e. elves, orks, dragons) and magic. You can pretty much customize your character however you want since there are no classes, though there are several archetypes most characters fall into. Street samurai are your physical combatants usually specializing in weaponry and cybernetic augmentation. Mages can heal, sling spells, and summon spirits. Deckers/Technomancers are the hackers of the game. Riggers specialize in the use of drones. And so on.The downside is that since there are lots of options, there are a lot of rules. As a player, it's not too bad - you can just learn your own part. But as a GM running a campaign, this can be extremely daunting. Mages have their own rules regarding magic. Deckers have their own rules for hacking. Riggers have their own rules for using drones, but share some similarities with deckers. The technomancer mechanics fall somewhere between mages and deckers. The book also does not do a good job of consolidating relevant information. You'll often find yourself flipping from one part of the book to another in order to figure out how one thing works. And some rules aren't even clarified very well (though the published errata can sometimes help). On top of that, the physical book itself isn't great. The glue used on the spine of the book is incredibly weak and fell apart when I started to read through it.On the plus side, the pages look great - images are colorful and crisp. The artwork is amazing and the short stories inserted throughout the book really help flesh out the feel of the setting. It's a bit of work, but I find it worthwhile. I still highly recommend giving the game a try, though you may want to invest in the PDF version if you're not a stickler about having a physical book in your hands.
