This is a fantastic book. Very careful and powerful thinking going on here. I look forward to more from Coulthard. This is life-changing. The intellect is crisp and honest. A must read for anyone seeking to understand Colonialism and Decolonization. Focused on First Nations, to be sure ... but relevant for all thinkers on the issues of colonialism and decolonization. A must read. Sure to become a classic.

Very informative and helpful to understand Indigenism.

I really want this to be a 4.5 stars, and the reason it's not five probably has to do more with my own inability to understand Marx and Fanon than the book itself. This was a really great and oddly smooth read, especially once I got out of the introduction where Coulthard lays out the heavy theoretical work and really gets into the meat of the book. Each chapter is laid out really neatly, which I appreciate a lot as a graduate student, and though Coulthard's argument is pretty heavy in both marxist and psychoanalytic theory, I did not ever feel frustrated with what the book was saying. This is a really key book to read for thinking about Indigenous politics and relationships to settler states, and manages to feel super grounded at all times. I really recommend this for anyone thinking about other modes of interactions!

Excellent book - a must read. Thoughtful and careful analysis that is necessary, particularly in the current political climate. Gives a long look at the nature of settler colonial relations with indigenous peoples and critiques the politics of recognition in a precise way.

Vanderhoof's book caught me at just the right time. I had been glued to books on the Middle East, ancient and current conflicts, and after another forbidding book, I put that down and opened An Embarrassment of Mangoes. Well done Ann! Thank you for taking me aboard with you. It was my pleasure being a silent observer.My wish is for everyone that needs a break, that they pick up his book and sit back with a drink in one hand and the book in the other.I've only ever given five-stars to any other author, twice. Ann, this is well deserved for the smile I've had on my face since the first chapter. It was only eclipsed by the tear in my eye at the ending.Keep sailing!

Having only visited a few of the many places Ann and her husband Steve visited on the East Coast of the US and throughout the Caribbean, and having never sailed in my life but spent a lot of time in small metal boats and dingys, I was surprised how at home I felt in these pages of her memoir. How I yearned to try the recipes at the end of each chapter. How I longed to take my new husband (I started reading this book on the last day of our honeymoon in the Dominican Republic), hop on a sailboat, and turn ourselves south toward the mangos and turquoise waters and wide smiles and "jus' now" time. Although Ann took her journey when I was still a child, I have been profoundly moved by her courage and devotion to learned and enjoying these two years of her life. If I'm ever able to take such a recess, I pray I'll be generous and meticulous and enthusiastic and brave as Ann. In the meantime, I'll be happy to return to An Embarrassment of Mangoes and all its riches.

The first off review is correct in describing the book. I have read several accounts of various individuals sailing the oceans for the first time, most in the Caribbean. Two things jump out about this story. First, reading other accounts, one is struck by the incredible number of mechanical mis haps and lack of preparation for them, such as not having the right spare impeller for he water pump. Their two year trip seems to have avoided such mis haps, kudos for Steve's mechanical preparation. Second, she mentions that many couples give this sort of trip up discovering too much confinement in a small space. Yet as another review notes, Steve is a sort of background crew figure with little said about their relations ship. Lots of recipes and inter action with the natives of the islands.

Ahhhhh. I just returned from a lifelong dream experience of sailing to the Caribbean. Well, not really, but I did live vicariously through Ann and Steve as I read of their adventures doing what I have never had the opportunity to accomplish. This is a wonderful retelling of their 2 year, round trip cruise from Toronto and through the islands. I was with them every minute to enjoy the trip and I thank the author, Ann, for that experience.

I am enjoying this book as a sailor who appreciates the adventures and realistic accounts of life on a cruising sailboat. What I find most bothersome is the lack of pictures. The story is of the sailing adventure of an editor and her photographer husband as they travel to the Bahamas and Caribbean. As I read the stories, I keep thinking how much better the book would be with photos.The recipes of local food favorites are a nice touch and provide a unique spin to the typical sailing adventure book.

This was a great book. The author really makes you feel like you are traveling with her in the Caribbean. Her adventures with her husband are more than I would be able to do but to read them made me feel like at times I was right along with them (though I could never drink the amount of alcoholic beverages they did!). It was a grand adventure they were looking for and it was what they got, and more. They were so personable which is why, I believe, their adventure was so very fruitful. I commend them for what they embarked on, what they did and how the author was able to share it with the rest of us.

There are sailing books about sailing and then there are sailing books about people and places. This is a sailing book about people, places and cooking â€“ lots of cooking.If you love food and travel, you will enjoy the heck out of this story for that alone, even if you couldn't give two hoots about boats. And if you love food, travel, rum, and the freedom of the open sea, you will love An Embarrassment of Mangoes.Unlike sailing books that spin terrifying tales of storms and fatigue and jagged rocks and freezing cold and staying just one half-step ahead of death and calamity, this one weaves a pleasant and engaging story about a couple who take some time off from their careers to cruise the warm, clear waters of the Caribbean. Ann and Steve are (mostly) regular, normal folks doing something a lot of people dream about. They aren't trying to break world records or challenge King Neptune, they just wanted to get away for a little while, and do it on their own terms. Did I mention that there is cooking?An Embarrassment of Mangoes follows their experiences as they sail from Toronto to Trinidad (just off the coast of Venezuela) and back again on board their 42-foot Tartan sloop, Receta (Spanish for "recipe," many of which you will find interspersed with the text) and their dinghy, Snack. Ann begins the story admittedly unsure of the whole deal, but soon finds herself an enthusiastic convert to the life of an oceanic vagabond.Many sailing stories are written by people who are sailors first, and also just happen to be functionally capable of assembling sentences in a way that normally doesn't violate the most important rules of grammar, usage and style too egregiously. I was really glad to find a book specifically written for the iPhone 6, as most books that I found on Amazon were for all models. There are definitely a few features that appear on the iPhone 6 that are simply not possible on other iPhones. One such feature is the ability to view icons and text in two different views.Because of the large screen, the iPhone 6 also introduced an extended keyboard. I wanted to learn exactly what I could do with this keyboard, and this book helped me to figure out these iPhone 6-specific features. The topics were all very easy to locate using both the general table of contents, as well as the chapter-specific TOC's.I also appreciated the plentiful screenshots. I am a visual person, and having the screenshots made this guide feel a lot more hands-on. That's another thing that is impossible to have in a book covering all iPhones, since the iPhone 6 has certain capabilities that earlier models do not.

I am using this book now with my new I-Phone 6-S Plus. I do a chapter a day and I am getting smarter every day. Easy to read. Has examples so you can see what they are talking about. Has places you can make notes if you are forget for so you don't have to reread the entire book to find the answers. Also got the Missing Manual for I-Phones. My daughter who grew up with the I-phone found it very informative. I am not there yet. Have to work on this book first than rate the other one. Get it if you are not of this age. In one day I was fixing things that I had no concept of prior. Every senior who has ventured into the computer phone age should have it.

This book is so very easy to follow and even though it is very thick, I was able to tune up my iPhone 6 in about 30 minutes. I keep it around for easy reference but frankly, I haven't had to use it anymore since the first time as it explained everything I needed to know!

It was just what i needed. Showed me things i would not have figured out on my own without a lot of time spent dinking around with my phone.

Not a costly book, but also not very helpful, especially to new iPhone user.. Doesn't offer enough help to really get through all the different aspects of the iPhone 6.I was left with wanting a bit more extensive discussion of features, how to move back and forth between screens, setting up iCloud account.

Don't waste your money. Same info online. Index of little use. Not user friendly.

I've got a library of tech books that all except this one have the same problem. That is, trying to find the solution to your issue within the book. With this book it's easy to find an answer to whatever your inquiry is, with a very detailed index and table of contents. Instructions are detailed and clear to understand. My iPhone is a 6S, but the data in the book is equally applicable.

I am new to the iPhone6. This book has a lot of useful information and was very helpful. The one thing I didn't care for is the index in the back. Nothing seems to be organized. The topics are not grouped together, just random.

So here is my funny story with this book. We got it from the library when my son was 1.5 and read it to him. It was great because he could recognize the pictures and foods. It encouraged him to enjoy food and see others enjoying too. All the characters are always smiling! So one of the lines in the book is, "Always try one bite! you just might like it!" The first time my son refused food, I sort of mumbled the line to him quietly. He perked up and laughed so I went and grabbed the book and read the line from that same page. Magic! he took a bite! It became a tradition. Whenever he won't try something new we sing the line to him, grab the book (we keep it near the table!) and presto--he tries one bite. He might spit the bite out, yes, but he has never refused trying something new. How is that for the power of words and books, eh?! Now as he is older, we don't even need to quote or show the book--he does it out of habit. While I can't guarantee your kid will do the same, this book really made an impact for us. We got it so many times from the library we finally just bought it. If nothing else, I want to save it to show him when he is older so we can laugh about it.As for the book itself--it is a nice solid thick board book. No flimsy pages here. The pictures are simple, clear and colorful. The people pictured are diverse and the message is good. They show healthy foods, not junk or sweets. And it talks about table manners too. It really does this in a fun and enjoyable way and I think it is a cheerful - definitely not punitive - book about eating and food. You can't really lose with this one. It's nice also that it focuses on several kids--looks like maybe it is in a daycare or school, rather than one kid because I think my son liked that he could be part of all those kids by eating. Group mentality works here.It's a small book but I would highly recommend it. There are so many complicated books abut eating these days, it's nice to just have a simple straightforward one like this. I like the series as well but the other books are not as good as this one in my opinion.

I ordered this book along with several other books to include in my son's kitchen play area. This one is his favorite and is a really good book to introduce your little one to the process of mealtime: washing hands, setting the table, trying new foods, and then cleaning up. It is set in a daycare setting where the children are sitting at a table at their height and pass each other food in a family dining style. One part I don't like is the 'one bite' rule as several families don't use that rule for a variety of reasons. But it is otherwise a good tool to introduce your child to the process of mealtime.

We've only had this book a few days, and my daughter has already memorized several of the phrases - she loves it! *I* like the page about the "rule" of always trying one bite - always an upward battle with toddlers!

My daughter now always "tries one bite" at mealtime. She says, "I gotta try one bite, just like the book says, cause I might like it!" She's such a picky eater and getting her to try anything was a challenge. Even before this book we tried to make it a rule to always try one bite but she wasn't having it. But she'll do what this book says! Go figure. At least she can try food now and decide for herself whether she likes it or not :)

We purchased all of the Elizabeth Verdick books for use with our children. They are well written, great pictures, and extremely easy for a toddler to understand. So glad that we found these books and have them in our parent toolbox.

Great teaching tool

We bought this because our 3 year old is such a picky eater! I was hoping this book would teach him better eating habits but so far no change!! I am still hoping for the best, really cute story and teaches a good lesson!

Not my favorite book in the series- not as educational as it could be but still a decent book that my child enjoys
