Not what I expected. Great textbook for a class on the subject. Not helpful for learning to read lips.

Great book with tons of activity ideas and education. There aren't a lot of speechreading resources out there and even though this one is older, its great!

I haven't delved into this book yet, but from the Index it looks like all I need is this and practice.All I did was google lip reading at Amazon and they were on their way. Thank you, Amazon.

This book is intended to help in Oral Transliteration. I read this text for an OT course several years ago, and I still find myself using some of the principles regularly. This book, I am sure, would help in any OT professional use or OT certification. I never had a chance to take that certification exam, but I bet it wouldn't hurt.I feel that it would help anyone who communicates with someone who is hard of hearing or deaf (who DOES NOT use any kind of signed language). It gives all kinds of tips about gestures and rephrasing, using key words. Say a friend is going deaf, and you notice they aren't understanding you as well as before, this book could help you. A member of my family has lost much of his hearing, and I use some of the tips in this book to help him understand me.There are tons of exercises in the back- but they require having a partner who can read (without voicing) the sentences, so you pick up on how to speechread them.I also have found myself out somewhere, speechreading people across the room. Speechreading is difficult and requires hours of practice. For so many people, this is how they get their information, by "reading lips". It amazing how much they have to concentrate and pay attention. The (deaf) man who taught my Speechreading course, read the lips of his professors for a bachelor and master's degree, without the help of a transliterator. Amazing! I have much respect for the speechreaders out there.

This book is gentle and supportive, and aimed at women who are dealing with emotional blockers in intimate/sexual relationships, and at their partners. (If you are confident and happy in your sexuality and looking for "new ideas", or dealing with complex medical issues, then you can probably skip this book.) Nagoski encourages a kind, mindful, nonjudgmental approach to exploring sex. Her writing is repetitive, but I feel that the repetition serves a purpose: she is targeting women who feel beaten down or lost, who need to hear over and over again that they are ok, they are not "broken," and they deserve to be happy and feel good. Nagoski introduces topics that range from casually interesting, to extremely vital to the health/safety of our society (ie. Arousal non concordance). I just wish there were more advice about practical action steps to change the things we want to change. Hopefully there will be a sequel.

Come As You Are is absolutely the best sex book I've ever read. I used to buy so many trying to figure out how desire and arousal worked and while I learned good things, this was the book that felt like a warm hug that explained everything and how I could make this work for me. What I did not expect was to learn so much about my brain, and how *exactly* that was connected to sex, and why feeling joyful and content in life in general applies to sex specifically. I'd heard that sex and life were intertwined; the whole "it's all connected" but it never made sense until reading Emily Nagoski detailing HOW and WHY.So all of Emily's blog posts come to life in this book, and every time I re-read chapters, I feel like the science connects in a deeper way. She covers attachment, sex that advances the plot in relationships, emotions, and mindfulness, just to name some topics. My favorite part of the book was learning about how the brain interprets goals and effort, and how you can use that to your emotional advantage to make life easier. (Also, this applies to road rage!)I'd also always read that imagination was a big part of creating a better sex life, and this is the first book to have really sparked my curiosity in a way that I'm intrigued about sex. (I've had painful sex and avoided it for years now, while still desperate to find out how to make things work for me.) The way I think about sex and the way I feel about sex have been transformed after reading Come As You Are. Instead of comparing myself to friends' stories about sex, lately, I'm actually interested and find myself musing on how things work for me to feel so confident and excited about sex. I've come a long way from feeling that I have SO far to go to enjoy sex, to feeling jealous and inadequate when friends talked about sex, and thinking that I'm obviously not the goddess they are because I don't have those stories. That transformation alone feels therapy-huge, to have come from such shame and fear and sadness to curiosity and intrigue.I'm pretty sure Emily is also the first sex educator I've noticed that used empathy to write little notes to the reader about their struggles. I cannot tell you how many times I've re-read those paragraphs on her blog and in this book, because it was exactly what I'd needed and never had anyone else say before. Emily GETS it. And I'm so thankful she realizes the power of what she's teaching, so this book could be possible. I really think every person alive could learn something and feel more at ease in their relationships and with sex, just from reading this book. Her blog is a refreshing on its own, but this book feels like a week at the spa. Thank you, Emily.

Come As You Are has been the greatest book on sexuality that I have ever picked up! I am a clinical counseling graduate student and have found a fascination in human sexuality. This book is AMAZING!! Not only does it fulfil my “student” needs in regards to being able to learn from a clinical perspective, but it also fulfils my womanly/wifely needs too! Arousal and desire and the science behind those have been in interest of mine within my educational background. But it is rare for me to gain insight for my own personal needs! I didn’t expect to enjoy this book on a personal level and will FOREVER encourage my counseling clients to read this book as well if they are struggling with their sex lives.Dr. Emily Nagoski is such a joy to read. Not only does she write using science and facts, but she gives such detail and simplistic terms that anyone can understand! Emily, a blog writer, covers so many great topics in this book that really detail the “Why’s” behind sexual arousal and desire. She covers many topics including emotions, mindfulness, attachment, and the science behind how the brain works! Her joyful writing style really makes this an easy read and is just so entertaining!On a personal level, I really transformed my own feelings towards sexuality. Instead of being so clinical about my own feelings and emotions, I’m becoming more interested in finding what I enjoy about sex. Obviously, my husband isn’t complaining either 😊Whether or not you have intimacy concerns or any type of sexual dysfunction, I truly believe that everyone can learn something about their own relationships and sexuality. This book is truly amazing and so enjoyable! I highly encourage you to read this one!

I LOVE this cookbook. I eat mostly low fat raw, no sos, and am amazed at how spectacularly tastey food with no oil, salt or sugar can be! Only a truly great chef can so this. All the other raw low fat recipes I've tried made me feel deprived. I eat a tremendous amount of salad greens and before this could not find one low fat salad dressing recipe I really loved. All of them are great. Not to mention all the sauces for my steamed veggies.. there are lots of fairly gourmet recipes for family gatherings too so no one has to pity me for my unappetizing plate. Even my husband who is very entrenched in his Sicilian family foods, thought some of the recipes sounded appetizing. Thanks for making food pleasurable for me again!

I have been waiting for this book to come out for so long and my copy finally arrived today. It was definitely worth the wait. While there are many talented plant based chefs who write beautiful cookbooks, their food is not very healthy, replete with tons of oil, sugar and salt. It's pretty easy to make anything taste delicious if you are using those three addictive ingredients!!! Try and make food taste good WITHOUT them. To do that, you need a true culinary genius which you have in Chef Bravo. With all the vegan crap like agave and olive oil that is being touted to as as healthy, it's refreshing that there are a few talented chefs out these who can make truly health promoting food delicious AND beautiful.Sure, if you are still eating sugar, oil or salt these recipes may taste a bit bland to you, at first. But as Dr. Alan Goldhamer always says "if this food doesn't taste good, then you really need to fast". No one needs to eat sugar, oil or salt. All three of those ingredients are disease promoting. Chef Bravo shows you how to avoid all of these toxins and makes it easy and delicious. This book is a masterpiece! Try his recipes and finally lose the excess weight and clean up your palate while enjoying the healthiest food on the planet. Great cookbook. This is a more complicated cookbook as it is written by a professional chef. Some recipes require hard to find food items but it's fun cooking with new foods. This is a cookbook for a more experienced cook - not your first cookbook.

Oh man, I REALLY wanted to give this book five stars. I'm a former foodie and an avid home cook who's been plant based for about nine months, and the gourmet nature of the book was what I needed to keep things interesting.I've made about half a dozen recipes so far and only had one dish that I loved. But I'm going to keep cooking from this book and see what happens. I'll update this review if my opinion changes, but since it's a new book without many reviews I thought this might help others.Issues:- Measurements - My main problem with the book is that the measurements are too vague, for instance "medium eggplant" can mean a lot of things. Not only is medium a relative measurement, there are many different types of eggplant. This is just one example but one that really screwed me over when I was making dinner for guests. A lot of the recipes have at least one instance of this. I didn't expect this lack of detail from an executive chef.- Number of servings - Most recipes serve 6 large servings. This is good and bad. Good because eating plant based means you eat a lot of food and I like having leftovers. Bad because when you don't like something, or the recipe fails (because of vague measurements), you end up wasting a lot. I've learned to cut the recipe in half the first time I make it, especially if it's an expensive recipe, which many are (not all, but some).Keep in mind that these recipes are mostly in line with how I normally eat, meaning I'm used to low fat and low salt, so when I evaluate the flavor of a recipe I'm not coming from the standard American diet. If I were, I probably would need to add some salt and fat to these dishes.Here's what I made and what I thought:Herbed Hummus - It was just ok, not great, will make again but add a little tahini. This is probably just my personal preference.Corn Chowder - Fantastic! can't say enough good things about it! BUT I had to use store bought stock so the sodium from that might have impacted the flavor.Roasted Tomatoes and Eggplant - Total FAIL! The lack of proper measurement for the eggplant was a real problem. It was completely raw. I ended up having to throw everything in a Dutch oven and essentially braising it.Coconut Vanilla Granola - Disappointing. Cook times seemed off and there were no instructions about how to cook it using two half sheet pans (which is what most home cooks have). Also, the FIVE dollar vanilla bean I used was barely detectable, use extract and save the money.Chayote Apple Salad - Fail. Not enough flavor and made A LOT of salad, most of it was thrown away (and that rarely happens in my house).Citrus Tahini Dressing - Pretty good, would make again.Creamy Cauliflower Soup - Nothing special, again I think the measurement issue was a problem. My cauliflower may have been too big and diluted the flavor of the aromatics?I would also say that this is not a cookbook for someone who doesn't already know how to cook pretty well. The recipes lack a lot of details, but I'm mostly able to figure it out. It's probably hard for a professional chef to "dumb down" instructions for home chefs. But I will say, the beginning of the book gives a lot of good tips about how to do some basics. I especially like the info about making vegetable stock. This book relies heavily on using homemade vegetable stock for flavor. If that's not something you're willing to do then accept that you will be getting excess salt from store bought stock.Bottom line, even though my rating isn't high I would buy this book again simply because the market for gourmet, no oil, no salt, no sugar recipes is so small and I'll take whatever I can get. I plan to use these recipes like I do all others, as a starting point to make my own. The reason for the low rating is because of the lack of detailed measurement and consideration for the home cook environment. It caused some problems for me (and worst of all caused some food waste) but I'm learning to work around it. Just cut the recipes in half the first time you make them and you should be ok.

Great Cookbook written by the Chef at The Inpatient fasting clinic that my MD and Chiropractor work out of. Easy to do and tasty recipes and because he works for this clinic I know that they are all healthy as well which is a huge plus. Since I am Vegan as well as doing my best to avoid added bad fats, salt and sugar and highly process foods in my diet these recipes work well for me as they are all free of those items as well. Good book and highly recommend it.
