Very disappointed. Almost 100 pages of the book are drawings that do not relate specifically to carving. Some look like children's coloring book drawings the others are OK sketches of animals that one could draw or find elsewhere. There is NOTHING in those drawings to illustrate any carving techniques, or how they would be carved. There are 3 pages of "animal reference photos". Umm I can find hundreds of similar photos by simply using the Internet. More useful would be examples of animal carvings in various stages of completion.I have only briefly glanced at the first 5 chapters, it does look as though there are some useful thoughts there, we shall see. Mostly I resent that over half the book is "filler". It looks as though she wrote 73 pages and realized that that was not long enough to be considered a book so cobbled together the aforementioned drawings and photos.

This is a very good introduction into wildlife relief carving. I have carved for years, but never did relief carving. The book offers very good instruction and then leads the reader through a step-by-step relief carving. Moreover, the lasting value of the book is the large number of wildlife patterns that can be used for ongoing projects. I highly recommend this book.

I purchased this book after reading other reviews and viewing the included picture templates from another web site. The book was exactly as I expected. The information concerning the use of carving tools gave me a better understanding of how to improve my carving skills and highlighted a few carving techniques I haven't read before. Great book for beginners. Full page templates. Easy and quick read.

This is a great book for an intermediate carver I wouldn't recommend it for a beginner starting out.

Wonderful book for the beginner carver...has lots of detailing, tips, and instructions. I recommend this book highly.

Based on the table of contents shown and the few pictures of the "cutting depths" for the buffalo, I thought this book would go into more detail about depths. WRONG!!! The line pictures and shaded pictures are good IF you can visualize how to layer your cuts.I am extremely disappointed in my purchase but won't send it back to Amazon as they did nothing wrong. I know I will never purchase another Lora S. Irish book on carving unless I can actually see what is in the book first.If you have the talent to know what areas should be cut to what depth, then I guess the pictures are worth it. BUT if you are a beginner looking for a HOW TO book on relief carving this certainly is not it.I will put this on eBay to get rid of it and try to recoup some of my wasted money.

Good for beginners.

This book has a lot of good ideas to practice relief wood carving. It does assume you have some sort of carving skills. It's a great reference book for my collection. I bought the book "used". The book looked "New". No markings at all throughout.

More than any author, Jane Austen inspires popular criticism—lit crit without the flummery, analysis that remains free of the jargon adopted by professional academics. I read on both sides of that fence but infinitely prefer the popular criticism side, which has the power to draw anyone who enjoys attentive reading into its circle. And John Mullan’s book is among the best I have read in that arena.He approaches the business episodically, through a series of inquiries that range from trivial matters such as “Do Sisters Sleep Together?” to subtler points of style such as “When Does Jane Austen Speak Directly to the Reader?” Each of his leading questions opens a little window on her work, examining issues of her cultural context or her literary technique. The essays embrace all the published novels, with (sadly) only glancing mentions of the juvenilia and unfinished works. (I wish people paid more attention to *The Watsons*!)Along the way, he illuminates aspects of her world of manners such as the fine points of naming—why it’s rude for Mrs. Elton to call Mr. Knightley “Knightley,” to be sure, but also what Elizabeth Bennet is telling us about herself when she stops saying “Mr. Darcy” and starts referring to him as “Darcy.” (Speaking of the mega-couple, Mullan showed me a lot about their mutual attraction that I had overlooked during a gazillion rereadings of *Pride and Prejudice.*) What other critic would have considered an examination of how Jane Austen uses weather? Or what cues we should pick up from mentions of visits to the seaside?Mullan has a keen eye for the telling detail, and a clear voice for explaining just how and what it’s telling. His analysis of Jane Fairfax and Frank Churchill’s meeting at Worthing is especially illuminating; and the conclusions he draws from the characters who are not given direct dialogue in the novels goes far beyond the usual platitudes. (*Emma* shows particular skill in the way it uses people speaking and not speaking: Mr. Perry drives the plot without ever saying a word, and Miss Bates reveals the truth without saying anything that we or the characters attend to.)The back half of the book takes Mullan’s game up a notch when he brings his focus to bear on Jane Austen’s writerly techniques, especially in the chapters “Why Do Her Plots Rely on Blunders?” and “How Experimental a Novelist Is Jane Austen?” (“What Makes Characters Blush?” is also surprisingly illuminating.) He has a gift for discovering a telling keyword or concept and following its thread throughout a novel, showing us how it reveals Austen’s thought processes.Many of us have had the experience of seeing something new each time we reread a Jane Austen novel. After decades of that experience, I thought I was reaching a point of diminishing returns—till John Mullan showed me how much I was unable to see without his help.

John Mullan's book is packed with insights about Austen's writing. His approach to Austen involve looking at twenty crucial "puzzles' that he then 'solves.' All of which attempt to catch Austen in the 'act of greatness' (Virginia Woolf's phrase). Mullan asserts that there is so much more going on in any passage of Austen than most people realize. To catch Austen's full meaning, readers must look closely at everything she says. Mullan writes in his introduction, 'Little things matter, not because Austen's interests were trivial, but because the smallest of details--a word, a blush, a little conversational stumble--reveal people's schemes and desires." A small example of what he means can be seen in this passage from his book: 'What time do John Thorpe and James Morland set off from Tetbury to Bath in "Northanger Abbey?" Ten o'clock: we need to be clear because John Thorpe is an absurd braggart obsessed with the unlikely speed of his horse, and his bending of every fact to his purpose ("It was eleven, upon my soul! I counted every stroke") is the essence of his character.' A new friend urged me to read this book, and now I am urging you to read it. If you want to get the most out of reading anything by Jane Austen, you must read John Mullan's "What Matters in Jane Austen."

I liked the book, with a couple of fairly minor reservations.First, you really do have to know your Austen, but I assume anyone considering this book falls into that category. The author talks about all of Austen's novels, plus an unfinished one that I've never read. You might not follow all of what he discusses if, for example, you aren't clear on all the plots and characters (I don't remember who anyone was in Northanger Abbey, for instance, as I've only read it once a long time ago).Second, yes, he gets a bit detailed on things like who blushes. But the whole point is that these things meant something in Austen's day, and that we're unlikely to pick up on lots of these little details now. I especially appreciated the chapter on money, as I've always wondered about the relative importance of many of the characters' comments on finances.Third, the book ends very abruptly. That may seem like a picky detail, but I was reading along on my e-reader and it just suddenly ended. No conclusion, no wrapping up, nothing. It was a somewhat disappointing way to finish it up.If I could give a rating between four and five starts, I would. It wasn't quite 5-star-worthy, but I did find it very interesting and informative.

Jane Austen is a master story teller. Her careful expression is often witty and subtle and avoids unnecessary details. John Mullen's comments provide useful insights for modern readers. Although Jane Austen usually avoided symbolism and hidden meaning, her sophisticated style is not always apparent. Mullen points out that blunders and blushes as well as giving selected characters no spoken lines provide important shades of meaning. Jane Austen avoids unnecessary details; but for modern readers, Mullen's information about life in the early 1800s such as etiquette for mourning (not grieving) for the death of a family member and the cost of living make the stories more understandable. "What Matters in Jane Austen" is clearly written and well organized. All of the 20 chapters treat useful subjects that enhance understanding and enjoyment of Jane Austen's novels.

It did a great job at teaching information as well as showing a different point of view. Though it was a little dry at parts, the book put a lot of information into a small amount of space.

Kecia Ali provides an amazingly clear and lucid writing on this very difficult and complex topic.She has a knack for being able to connect the past with the present as it relates to medieval muslim thinking about gender, sex, marriage, divorce, slavery, intimacy and a whole basket of related topics with the ethics related to them.Ms. Ali's other detailed and wonderfully intricate book titled Marriage and Slavery in Early Islam coupled with this book is a perfect introduction to Muslims and non-Muslims alike who want to understand the "structure" and "objectives" of these institutions as they took form and evolved in the minds of the pre-modern/medieval Muslim scholars.Her discussion on this topic is timely and the relevance to today's Muslim scholars, thinkers and policy makers is absolute and is elaborated in a very clear and comprehensive fashion.

This book is amazing! It's hard to say too much about it. The authors clarity and style are so great, she trusts the reader and brings out the moral/legal ambiguities and she lays things out so the reader can draw their own conclusion. Reading this book is like looking at life through a new lens, so much food for thought I marked it up and forced all of my friends tor read it. Those that don't are subjected to a summary of the main arguments anyways. I can't say enough about it!

This is an important contribution to an unknown field in the English speaking world. Most westerners have a negative restrictive view of not only Islam but especially perceive it as sexist and putting its female adherents in a very limiting position (and the pun is somewhat intended).This book will open up for those who wish to understand an approach very different from western norms. It was not a position which this reviewer necessarily was comfortable with but one which explains, and yes this book even critiques, that world which has been closed to us. Our previous exposure was to the 1001 Arabian Nights which like the Kama Sutra is outside the day to day lives of its followers while perhaps titalating for western readers.This is a major contribution to the dialogue which must emerge between our society and Islam.

The photos are lovely, and this served me well for most of the year, but if you're, say, using this calendar as a reference when trying to plan a weekend getaway for Columbus Day, you might want to plan it for the weekend before the date noted on the calendar. Or use a different calendar altogether. Canadian Thanksgiving and Columbus Day are not on October 15, but you wouldn't know that if you were using this Ansel Adams calendar. The whole point of having one is to know what's happening when. I nearly planned a trip for the wrong weekend because of this stupid thing. If I wanted pretty pictures, I would frame one. Never again, Little, Brown and Co! Next time, don't skimp on the copyediting.

The reason that I buy this calendar, year after year, is that the extra-large date boxes provide ample space for recording family medical appointments, upcoming meetings and activities, and other date-related reminders. The Ansel Adams black and white photographs are beautiful, and every year's selection is different.Each month's calendar page includes a mini-calendar for last month and next month, and indicates holidays, moon phases, and important items like daylight savings time changes. There is also an extra page for January of the upcoming year. This calendar is the same as the one sold in retail bookstores at year's end, but I like to buy it from Amazon as soon as it is offered (my 2013 calendar shipped in August), so that I can write in next year's appointments (beyond January) as soon as they are scheduled.

If you like Ansel Adams and regularly buy the annual calendar, you'll know all about the great pictures and the good amount of space for writing appointments against each day. This is usually an easy 5-star award. But this year - first time ever in over ten years of buying - the punched hole is so far in from the edge that it encroaches on the pictures themselves. Problem? Yes, if you plan hanging it on a picture hook and maybe framing and hanging any of the super prints after the year is over.

I have bought this and the Mini-Calendar for many years. This is the 2nd time the misdating of a holiday has caused me problems! October 15, 2018 is NOT Columbus Day! I booked travel far ahead assuming this, and we were all surprised each family member was expected at work instead.I communicated my displeasure last year with a religious holiday error in the Mini. I think I will have to find another "brand," but I will; miss the Ansel Adams photography each morning in my office. :(

Love these calendars; I buy one every year and never get tired of Ansel Adam's photographs. The calendar is well made, and the boxes are large enough to write everything on them that we have going on. I like that it includes the following year's January too so we don't lose track of upcoming things before the next one comes in. Loyal customer - the only calendar I buy.

I love my Ansel Adams calendar each year. It's exactly the size I need for the inside of my kitchen cabinet, it's made of beautiful, high quality paper, and it has spiral. I like the large squares for writing in my daily appointments, activities, commitments, birthdays. I like the black and white pictures because they are quietly beautiful...I don't want something colorful on that particular calendar. Too much color would distract...besides I use colored markers for my entries...that's enough color. Each year the selections are gorgeous. I order one of these each year for all those reasons. Can't beat those gorgeous black/white photos of Nature.

As an amateur photographer, I can think of no greater inspiration than seeing the Master's images on my wall every day.This is the only company, Little and Brown, authorized to use Ansel Adam's images to make a calendar. The quality of the prints, the paper, everything is superb.I'm planning to frame the images from last year.

I have bought this calendar every year for over ten years now. My husband loves black and white photography and Ansel Adams is one of his all time favorites. I have never once over all of these years been disappointed with this purchase. We are very technologically inclined people, e.g. all our appointments go on a shared calendar on our electronic devices. We don't use this to keep track of appointments it's really more of a monthly changing piece of art. However, the squares for each day are plenty big so if you are more of the traditional writing type and not so technologically inclined you will for sure love this calendar. I am happy to say I will continue to purchase this annually for my husband.
