Review

"Magisterial."---Stanley Fish, New York Times"[Higher Education in America is] a magisterial yet often contrarian assessment of challenges facing university governance, teaching, and, indeed, survival."---Jim Sleeper, Huffington Post"A thought-provoking book that defies political stereotypes. Because of its nuances, the book is a refreshing change from the openly hostile diatribes attacking higher education in recent years."---Peter Sacks, Minding the Campus"Bok draws on the latest empirical research to set the record straight about systems of governance, undergraduate education, doctoral programs, medical schools, law schools, and business schools, teaching, research, and tenure, tuition, financial aid, affirmative action, the role of government, inter-collegiate athletics, online education, for-profit institutions, and what he calls 'matters of genuine concern.' Comprehensive, judicious, probing, and immensely informative, written for students, parents, and taxpayers as well as 'insiders,' it is one of the best books to appear on this subject in decades."---Glenn Altschuler, Huffington Post"Monumental. . . . [Bok's] assessment is measured and clear, and we may confidently refer young academics and administrators to Higher Education in America as a primer on current affairs."---Mark Bauerlein, Weekly Standard"A detailed progress report on the challenges and opportunities facing our nation's colleges and universities. . . . Competition among schools produces benefits and causes problems. Most of the important ones are addressed in Bok's helpful volume. I hope he is right that we already have the ingredients in place to make the necessary reforms. I know we need university leaders like him to help activate those ingredients so that American higher education can continue to contribute in vital ways to our culture, our economy and our polity."---Michael S. Roth, Washington Post"In the past few years, UK government ministers have paid a lot of attention to the American higher education system, and some new ideas introduced in England, at least, have come directly from the US. Higher Education in America, written by a former president of Harvard University, serves to highlight the similarities between issues we face in the UK with those in the US. . . . Easy to read and comprehensive. . . . A useful overview of the state of US higher education in the early 21st century."---Mary Stuart, Times Higher Education"Hold on to your mortarboard; [Higher Education in America has] got five fat sections on the state of instruction at the undergrad then graduate level, with umpteen analyses of market forces at each turn, plus five forewords and four afterwords! Despite this daunting breadth, Bok keeps it real."---Katharine Whittemore, Boston Globe"One theme that I found particularly useful in Higher Education in America is Bok's treatment of undergraduate education and curriculum. Bok underlines the value of a broad university education at every level--for the individual, for the business who hires him or her, and for the society. . . . The book is worth reading carefully by faculty leaders and university administrators as they make their best efforts to enhance the educational effectiveness of their programs."---Daniel Little, Understanding Society"Derek Bok asks all the right questions about higher education, and his experience, research, and staggering intelligence pervade every page. The real value here lies in Bok's thorough examination of some of the most urgent challenges facing higher education--and in his spot-on recommendations for what needs to be done to address these concerns. This is an important book for both academics and families looking at a future in higher education." (Grandparents.com)

From the Back Cover

"This is an exceedingly ambitious book. In fact, I know of nothing remotely comparable to it in scope or scale. One of its many refreshing aspects is its unfailing common sense. Bok presents the most balanced account of American higher education that I know of, stating clearly the many things that are right about it, but also highlighting problems and challenges. He has an unerring eye for the right 'big questions,' and readers of all kinds will appreciate his focus on these questions."--William G. Bowen, president emeritus of Princeton University"Informative, provocative, and engaging, this is a very important book that should be of great interest not only to those working in higher education but to everyone else who is concerned about the future of America's colleges and universities. Its value lies in Bok's thorough analysis of some of the most urgent challenges facing higher education--and in his recommendations for actions to address them."--James J. Duderstadt, president emeritus of the University of Michigan"This book is like a very thorough checkup of a patient by an expert physician. Bok inspects nearly every major organ of the U.S. higher education system, provides a carefully balanced report on each, and concludes that the patient is in good overall health but showing signs of misuse and neglect in certain parts. The book includes exceptionally valuable observations about the system's strengths and weaknesses--and about remedies for some of its problems."--Steven G. Brint, vice provost of the University of California, Riverside"This is a major contribution to the literature on American higher education. It provides unusually comprehensive coverage and addresses controversies in an exemplary manner, fairly representing different positions and relying on empirical research to reach conclusions. I think this book will have a broad appeal throughout higher education. I can envision most administrators having a copy on their bookshelves, a ready reference and guide for their own pronouncements on the state of higher education."--Roger L. Geiger, Pennsylvania State University

The first few chapters give a very informative overview of the major segments of higher education: community colleges, comprehensive universities, and research universities. However, after that, things get less concrete. I felt that the sections on graduate education mainly dealt with issues and not a good overview of the institutions, and I felt his statements weren't grounded in fact--it was a lot of "it could" and "maybes". I also had issues with some of his characterizations, like the only use for a PhD is to teach, or that "pure research" means writing articles with lots of citations. Also, he doesn't tie everything together until the afterword, which, in my opinion, doesn't allow thorough treatment of the issues he brought up, and doesn't occur until I've waded through 20 chapters. In short, I find the section on undergraduate education well worth reading, but I think it loses value after that.

Derek Bok is a positivist writing to the postmodern world of higher education. He firmly believes that there is an objective truth about colleges and universities, and he is determined to martial every ounce of empirical evidence to prove this. His scientific beliefs are in a higher education that he imagines as beautiful and deserving of love. And his affections are not blind. He details every disfigurement. The book's strengths are in the sections on undergraduate education and professional education. The center of the story is the tension that is mounting around the need to improve the quality of undergraduate instruction. His evaluation of professional schools and how they balance the demands of the academy with the demands of the profession is masterful. (Plot spoiler alert.) Medical schools are given high marks and business schools are found lacking. The weakness of the book is the Steinbergian view West. His core audience is the Northeast, but yet when he speaks of the needs to improve quality (learning and instruction) and quantity (enrollment and graduation) in higher education, he gives the elite selective schools the principal's hall pass. His view seems to be that the real job of educating America will fall to comprehensive colleges that are in a distant land beyond the Charles. Other than a fanciful idea about "admissions lotteries" for selective schools, he makes no real attempt to call for collective action by the Eastern elites. This is unfortunate, because he might be one of the few voices that has the strength to do just that. (His best opportunity in the text is missed in his chapter on "Graduate Education.")At times, Bok sounds like he has entered the muddy trenches of Midwestern administration when he rails against NCAA athletics and unhelpful competition created by magazine college rankings. But his chief credential is that he was President of Harvard. Were these ever his daily concern? What seems clear is that he has attempted to expand his audience, while still writing for the Crimson Choir. The language at the end of the book is wistful and yearning. He counsels future academic administrators "to do what they can with carrots and sticks" (p.405). His real audience that he attempts to reach is the collegium of faculty across America. This is where he seems to have placed his faith and hope for the future of higher education. And this is probably as it should be...trying to reach the people that love education, and not just care about it.

I ordered this textbook for a Higher Education Administration course and I used this text as a reference constantly. Although I didn't agree with all of Dr. Bok's views but he is very knowledgeable about higher education.

This book was required for a course. It was interesting to read about the history of college education in America.

Very much an academic polemic. Author tackles all of the variations of higher education, to such an extent, including the professional graduate programs, it can be overwhelming to absorb. What were the author's main criticisms? Has accessible higher education for the masses benefited both individuals and society too? No doubt the usual post-secondary baccalaureate degree is not the best fit for all adults. Ironically, as the land of second chances, sprinkled with the continental ideal of a universal education, the U.S. remains committed to this approach.

This book turned out to be something other than what I expected. As context, I grew up in Boy Scouts and have always been enchanted by nature, and I now study the natural world for a living. So a book called "How to Read Nature" got me excited to learn about "how to read nature".Unfortunately I don't think I was the target audience. This book is 90% motivational speech, 10% "how to read nature". The motivational speeches are great, and he is completely correct about the value of getting your head out of the sand and starting to pay attention to the natural world around you. But it became tedious to continuously read that same speech re-told in different ways over and over. I wanted more meat I could sink my teeth into, actual concrete specifics for how to read nature. General guidelines are provided which can be applied in any location all over the world, but they are fairly obvious and not that helpful to someone like me. At the very end of the book he provides a bibliography to other works with more specifics (I assume). That was probably the most valuable part of the book for me.The goal of this book is to inspire people who don't spend a lot of time observing nature. The problem is that those people aren't likely to read it. With a title like "How to Read Nature" it is attracting a different audience, one like me who already loves nature and would like to learn more about how to actually read it. That wasn't what I got.I appreciate the author and his passion for the subject. I feel a sense of kinship to him for this. I certainly couldn't have written a better book (and he is indeed a good writer). The title is simply a bit misleading, probably not on purpose though.

Felt like preaching to the choir. After reading the book I do not know ' how to read nature ' any better than before I read the book.

For those who wish to deeply commune with nature, this book is excellent. Many of Gooley's recommendations are akin to what I did while hunting some 40 years ago in Montana. Hiking is insufficient for elk, deer, and antelope; but hunting awakens latent senses. Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset said that “Man does not stalk in order to kill, he kills in order to have stalked.” It's a feeling of being more fully alive. Gooley does not send readers stalking, but his suggestions can generate the same keen sensitivities. Suffice to say that the book makes nature ever so much more exciting and delightful. I must add that my daughter bought the book and literally field tested on her two young children. The results confirmed my expectations. My only criticism is that Gooley does occasionally take too long making his case

As with all School of Life books, this little volume is a fine introduction to its subject, written on a distinctly individual & personal note by someone passionate about it. In this case, Tristan Gooley is our guide to getting out of the house -- and, more importantly, out of the housebound, man-made frame of mind -- and rediscovering the natural world. For all of our technological expertise & "development" -- what a ghastly concept! -- of the wild, it's the natural world that's finally real, far more real than our artificial environment, however comfortable & sometimes necessary it may be. We need to be reminded of that ... and the best way, really the only way, is to get out there ourselves,But merely walking through the natural world isn't the same as being in it. I've seen all too many people walking in our local parks, immersed in their devices, getting nothing out of it but the exercise they could just as easily have gotten on a treadmill. No doubt you've seen the same thing. But if you put away or do without devices, if you actually take the time to experience the natural world -- sights, sounds, smells, sensations, memories, thoughts -- it doesn't take long before you're in a different mode of time & being. And as Gooley notes, it can just as easily be in a park, or even your own yard, as in the actual wilderness. The key is attention: slow, measured, open to the experience. And for those who are more adventurous, he offers exercises & possibilities on a larger scale as well. Start small, go far ... and you can go far in a small space, as Thoreau understood. But start. That's the single requirement. For anyone who finds the man-made world "too much with us" -- and isn't that just about all of us, at one time or another? -- this little guidebook is most highly recommended!

The author says on page 141-142 that our body temperature fluctuates by 34 degrees in a circadian rhythm. It certainly does not!! We'd be deader than a door-nail. No proof-reading?

The natural world is full of wonder if you just look around. This book is about slowing downand finding amazing things all around you no matter where you live our travel. It is a newway to look at everything you've been missing.

As with any School of Life book, it explains simple concepts that you already know, but don't practice. This book in particular explains why we love nature and just helps you appreciate even more.

Informative and instructional with a bit of entertainment. Many lessons are wrapped into this book. I only wish that I had the time to make all of the noted observations a sort of second nature for myself.Good podcast featuring Gooley at Art of Manliness which I heard several months after reading a couple of Gooley's books.

In this fourth edition, Rubin excels at providing everything working library professionals and those desiring to become library professionals need to know. This text could be considered the librarian's Bible, as it is so comprehensive in its coverage of the profession. Rubin's relaxed and conversational writing style makes it a highly approachable text and a valuable addition to any professional resource collection, library and information science classroom, or personal reference." --Voice of Youth Advocates"Well informed about the latest developments and issues in the field ... LIS faculty who teach introductory courses in LIS should consider assigning Rubin's text as the primary reading. No textbook can perfectly match every instructor's desired learning outcomes, but this one may serve well with just a few supplementary readings." --American Reference Books Annual"Continues to deserve its place in the required curriculum of many American MLS programs ... in its latest edition, [it] lives up to the broad expectations set by its title." --Against the Grain

I was assigned the Third Edition (2010) of Richard Rubin’s textbook Foundations of Library and Information Science for a course in my first semester of a Master of Library Science degree program. Anytime I see the word “Foundations” in a textbook title I prepare myself for a yawnfest. The word usually signifies a broad but shallow overview of a subject that cursorily and dryly touches on a lot of topics without providing enough detail to render any of them interesting. Not so with Rubin’s book. It provides an excellent overview of the library and information sciences and does so in an engaging and stimulating manner.LIS is a pretty diverse discipline, encompassing a lot of occupations and areas of scholarship, but Rubin manages to give them all their fair due. He provides a comprehensive overview of this broad field of study, but also succeeds in exploring the subject in satisfying depth, delving into matters of both theory and practice. While I was reading the book, every time I thought to myself, “but what about this?” sure enough, within a few pages Rubin had answered my question. The writing is crystal clear and concise and doesn’t put the reader to sleep. In fact, his text is often engaging and inspires enthusiasm for the profession. Although the intended audience is students just starting out on the road to librarianship, Rubin’s take on the profession is neither pat-ourselves-on-the-back congratulatory nor rosily optimistic. He gives a balanced perspectives on the pros and cons of library work and doesn’t shy away from discussing the challenges librarians face in the Digital Age.The organization and design of the book is very user-friendly, with lots of helpful lists and tables. The text is logically subdivided under multiple levels of subheads, making it easy to find or refind what you’re looking for. I could likely use this book as a reference for every paper I write over the course of my masters program, if for nothing else than to consult its lists of sources and selected readings. I rented this book, but I wish I would have bought it. Too bad its so pricey. I would gladly buy an e-book edition, if the publisher would make one available.

I was the only one in my class to read the whole book over the summer. I learned a lot but felt silly when I raised my hand and no one else did. Yes, I'm a geek.

Neal-Schumann books hold the market on Information and Library Science textbooks and during most of my MLS classes, very few of their books were digitally available, so I got the HC textbook. I got a very good price here at Amazon compared to the school bookstore, and the used textbooks are generally in pretty good shape at Amazon so I always check here for textbooks. The book itself was thorough, although class lectures largely addressed the same content. My main complaint is the very small typesetting and much of the information in this authors' textbooks is repetitive - which makes some sense for introductory classes but there was a fair amount of overlap, I didn't end up using the actual textbook that much as the content was largely covered within my other classes that semester. Might be of more use if you are taking one class per semester instead of a full courseload.

Had to buy this for school for a Masters program. Usually I would consider renting books. But this one I am glad I purchased. Rubin does a good job giving a well rounded view of the past, present and future of the Library professional. It is an easy read and not overly technical like some. The references to scholarly journals in each chapter alone are worthwhile if you need more info on a particular chapter topic. Glad I purchased this one. I know I will go back to it for reference.

Standard well-known textbook for MLIS and some library tech classes. I covered my paperback copy with book tape because you will be referring to this book a lot during your studies.

The book was helpful because it was a required text for my course. However, I give it three stars because it was sticky and I had to wipe it clean. Another drawback is you can't highlight or make any notes in the book.

had to have this for school. it was okay. i would say for the subject matter, it was pretty easy to read and had enough flow and design so you would not get bored.

It's a textbook, great. No really it is a nice resource, my prof thinks it's a little outdated even though it is the current edition but I don't mind it at all.

This is a brilliant, simply extraordinary book. Will Hall's worldviews regarding mental health suffering, wholeness, recovery, and thriving are seminal and next-paradigm. I am recommending this book to people in the peer/recovery movement all over the country. Run don't walk and buy this glorious collection of voices from the social justice movement in mental health. I am so grateful to Will for his work of the last decade: he is helping to save the world, one brilliant, vulnerable, powerful human being at a time.

I did not expect to feel the way I did about this book: when I began to read it I quickly realized that it shared the voices of people I had desperately needed to hear. I appreciated the diversity of experience and opinion represented in these interviews and essays, and was especially moved by the essays written personally by Will Hall. Someone I love has lived with a schizophrenia diagnosis for many years. Having been a witness to this experience from its inception, and having had to negotiate my own way through it, I am now waking up to different perspectives. Over the years I have seen the ways in which the medical model has failed us, despite the dedication, skill and best intentions of the medical professionals we have encountered, and despite the help of psychiatric medication that is sometimes needed. This book offers thoughtful reflections on experiences of reality that are too often dismissed as symptoms of mental illness. It is a gift to those who would not otherwise be exposed to views outside of the conventional mental health paradigm, and that includes most of us, particularly in the USA. I am deeply grateful to Will Hall for this book and for his work as an advocate, educator, and therapist. We need these voices and visions in communities everywhere.

This is a really great book. It brings to light many issues with our current psychiatric system, including forced institutionalization and medications and medical abuse. But it is a hopeful book - it makes me feel like there is definite hope for recovery and that it is possible to live a good life while struggling with extreme or altered states (usually called psychosis).

I desperately wish I and my family had this book when I was diagnosed Bipolar (ne manic-depressive) in 1989. Now an expert by experience in psychosis and in the medical model of mental illness, I have been on meds for my entire adult life. Nobody went to bat for my visions and experiences, they were always something to be fixed. Until now.Mr. Hall has assembled an important collection of essays and short histories which argue fiercely for a more modern and humane approach to mental crisis. His personal journey and journalism acumen both usher a wide range of perspectives into a coherent whole. From dissenting Big Pharma insiders like Gary Greenberg and Robert Whitaker to pioneering voices researcher Eleanor Longden, from short poignant vignettes of oppression to inspiring examples like Finland's Open Dialogue success, Outside Mental Health gives me language and support for arguments I have wanted to make with my doctors and family but never been able to.I've studied "mental illness" and consensus mental health for twenty-five years. I feel more understood and humanely seen in the past two days reading this book than in years of memoirs, DSMs, neuroscience, psychotherapy, and crisis after crisis. Mr. Hall writes "I was pulled between two worlds, the world where I knew what was true, and the world where my truth was just a sign of illness..."I am far better equipped to begin living my truth than I was before reading the gift that is Outside Mental Health.

This is my first book review, but I just wanted to say it's one of the most important books I've ever read. If anyone has experienced an extreme state, they'll get something of value from this book. And that's an understatement.

I recommend this book to everyone. My so called delusions of the monitory psychiatric system were true!We will heal. We can change the world to a better place.

Made me think. Like the format. Beautifully written. Daring.

This compilation book of short essays and interviews is a labor of love by many lesser known names working to bring about mental health reforms who merit more attention. The realm of human experience encompasses a lot and the complexity of the brain is beyond true understanding. Given these realities, the field of what constitutes accepted parameters of sanity becomes quite fascinating as it really delves into time, place, intersectionality, politics, psychotropic drug policies, economic motivations, family dynamics, allopathic medicine, sociology, psychology, and more. "Outside Mental Health" is a great primer and conversation starter for how much else can and needs to be said about the current, prevailing practices of psychiatry that publicly tends to promote easy answers and quick fixes, yet glosses over true root causes and more sustainable methods of wellness. Congrats to Will Hall and to Madness Radio for getting this conversation going!
