I love to read true accounts, and this one was not a disappointment. I really enjoyed this book from beginning to end. I was amazed at all the survivors accomplished by using just what they found on the island, as well as their wrecked ship. Amazing what people can accompish when they put their minds to it!

I am an engineer and in a position to appreciate how hard the tasks accomplished by these shipwrecked men were. Especially impressive was Raynal, the Frenchman from the Grafton. I am not sure I could even duplicate his bird cage, much less his concrete chimney or his handmade nails or his new boat made out of the old shipwreck. I read in the epilogue that original account published of the Grafton shipwreck by the survivors ignited a craze at the time to steer away from technology and get back to first principles like gardening, and shipmaking. I feel the same way today.I have read several of these 19th century adventure books, like Ernest Shackelton's polar voyage and George De Long's experience on the USS Jeanette wreck. This ranks right up there among the best of these.It contrasts the experience of two sets of castaways on the same deserted island in the Southern Ocean south of Australia. The island is forbidding in the extreme with terrible year-round weather, high craggy cliffs, low wind-twisted trees and scrub brush, and a pestilence of biting black flies and blue-bottle flies.The first set of shipwreck survivors provides the Shackelton example of both moral and physical leadership leading to a 100% survival rate for all the castaways of the Grafton. The second set of castaways resembles the "Lord of the Flies". The second set of castaways from the Invercauld has about a 10% survival rate and experience a wide range of the worst in human behavior.My impression is that both sets of castaways carried this great and horrible experience with them for the rest of their lives. The Grafton castaways learns timeless lessons about leadership and courage, while the Invercauld crew learns fear and loathing and recrimination that likely haunted them for the rest of their lives.

Wow..fantastic and incredibly well researched book. Couldn't put this down and finished it in a day! This book as incredibly well written. So often books like these can quickly become dry and you loose interest. Joan was able to use an amazing amount of research and backsory to build up an engaging authentic masterpiece. She was also able to weave together multiple plots quite successfully, and as reader, I wasn't confused. Another reader pointed out similarities in this tale and Ernest Shackleton's adventure, which I would definitely agree with. Check out Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage which was the book that really sealed the deal for me in adventure saga's.Since I was a kid and first read Robinson Crusoe, I've been enamored with tales of shipwrecked souls. There aren't too many in general out there, and not sure how I missed out on this one for so long. It was so good I bought a copy for my grandmother who really enjoys nautical tales, and she really enjoyed it was well. A++

To me this was a page-turner, a thoroughly enjoyable story of a real historic event. The author has scoured the available written logs to produce a factual yet also entertaining narrative.She follows the fortunes of two groups of shipwrecked sailors. One is made up of people that learn to care for each other: they read the bible every day, pray for their deliverance, band together and help each other at every turn. "Love one another as I have loved you" is the crucial scripture that informs their every action from early on. They prosper against overwhelming odds. Another lacks all leadership, morality or inner guidance and quickly turns on itself, its selfish individuals either murdering, cannibalizing or bullying each other to a quick death.

Joan Druettâ€™s wonderful account of two ships which wrecked on New Zealandâ€™s sub-Antarctic Auckland Islands is masterfully done. Never just a dry account of the tasks required for survival, she paints portraits of the two crews with all their strengths and shortcomings.Although the two ships smashed into the forbidding rocky coasts within a short period of each other, neither knew the other was there.Captain Musgrave exhibited good leadership and, that along with the skill and ingenuity of the Frenchman Raynal, resulted in all five men to survive. Misfortune struck the Scottish ship, being burdened with a weak captain and a crew unwilling to do what was required to live.The book has special meaning to us, as we were two of the very few people allowed to visit these islands a few years ago on a small expeditionary ship. We walked among the Royal Albatrosses on Campbell Island, and made our way past beachmasters , Hookers sea lions, on Enderby Island. The biggest surprise in the book was no mention of penguins, which today are quite abundant. The yellow-eyed penguin populates Enderby, and the Snares penguin is endemic to Snares Island. One is not allowed to walk on Snares because it is covered with nests of 5 million pairs of sooty shearwaters on the fragile peat. Itâ€™s a sight one doesnâ€™t forget when, at dusk, the sky is black as these birds return from a day hunting at sea to feed their chicks.

So far this has been a fine read. I would recommend this for either right- before- bed, or on the beach, a quiet afternoon, etc. There are quite a few dynamic features to the story line. A few twists and tunes, and the characters are pretty well developed. There are a few parts that could be edited slightly better, but I do know most authors on here prefer for their readers to help them out in this aspect.It was not hard reading by any means, but it was also not an elementary level book. Be prepared for some love scenes. But honestly, sometimes they do add to the storyline, right?I hope to either purchase more in this series (if there is one) or get the author motivated to write more! Not that this was left with just a cliffhanger or anything, I have just loved how the storyline was developed, and would love to know where this could head into the future. Knowing how the characters have developed, interacted, and have grown leaves me with a lot of hope for more. I always love series/ books where there is a spin- off into a similar setting, but with acquaintances that the characters had, or will have.Overall, this is a great value and I would highly recommend it. It is a great value for the price, and it simply cannot be beat! I will be purchasing more from this author in the future, and look forward to new releases.

I was hoping that by now Bayleigh would have get her self together and stop being such a whinnying cry baby, seriously! That girl is annoy, love the drama. Jace as always wayyyy to good and patience for her. I'm so getting tired of her but I am almost done with the series and can't stop now, really hope she grows and mature a little in the 4th book.

Winter Untold is a book that is very easy to follow along. If you are having trouble in relationships, this a good book that will tell you everything you want to hear. I personally would love to be Bayleigh in the story. She gets the dream boy all of us teens want. I recommend this book to any teen, but especially ones who enjoy love stories. After you find you enjoyed it, you will be glad to know there are plenty more. Its really something to look forward to. I encourage all to get this book! Its worth the time.

I keep reading thinking she will have an epiphany and finally grow up, but instead she keeps getting everything she wants and everyone just puts up with her and indulges her every whim. I am thoroughly annoyed.

It was a great installment. My heart was in my throat for a lot of it, but overall it worked out just right!

I liked how the relationship represented that of a true one. I could relate to the characters on a personal level. I would recommend it to young teenagers out there.

I really enjoyed the series. It's a heartwarming and feel good read. I read the whole series within a matter of days because I couldn't put it down.

I hated this book. I made myself read it because I felt like I owed it to myself to see what this author so many people love thought of Estonia. I was blessed with a trip to Estonia at the beginning of September, 2013, and I loved it. This book is a disservice to anyone who may be contemplating a trip to this tiny Baltic country. Theroux uses Estonia as a stomping ground, as a backdrop for him to just rant. The entire book is him complaining about all of the things he doesn't like about Estonia, Estonians, and things that have nothing to do with either, like Israel. He went on several rants about that. I just felt like I was reading a book written by some old cranky bigot, which I guess for some people is charming, but I felt like he was an insensitive, idiot. What made me the most angry about this book is that throughout the book there are about 5 paragraphs that could have been conversation starters, addressing the nature of oppression, and so on. This could have been a very good book but he chose the easy way out and just wrote what he must have thought his readers would want to hear. I am happy to give this book to the library, but only because I could never bring myself to trash a book.

I have been to Estonia about 3 times and come from an Estonian heritage, so I was interested in reading this author's take on a year in the country. As it was his personal take on life there I have to give him leeway for that but generally it was an unsatisfactory book. The impression was rather dour overall and left me more with an takeaway of his problems and issues with life and being there than on the country as a whole. I personally think this does not reflect an accurate or an interesting view of the country, but if you wish to read a book about an individual's life abroad and the struggles therein then this might be a good book to read. But for an accurate picture of Estonia and its people I would skip this book.

I must first admit that my personal bias as an exiled (by the Soviets)Estonian,living down under in another "periphary" colours my view of this book.Having read one of the first Amazon reviews for the book and noted the negativity expressed there,I was somewhat intrigued as to what Theroux's problem had been during his "winter of discontent" while accompaning his wife on a Fulbright Scholarship in Estonia.I made the mistake of purchasing the book to discover that the author was merely using his "Estonia" as a sort of stage to show off his intellectual prowess and extensive reading by using a series of quotes which seldom helped to clarify and more often created confusion as to what exactly he was on about in describing the country accurately. Indeed he seems to spend more time talking about other countries than the country that the books title claims to be about.I generally have not minded being the brunt of uninformed "witiscisms"about the land of my birth over the last sixty years,but I found this tome more akin to the sort of writings produced by Putins FSB and Nashi youth propoganda machine.Sadly it also reinforces for others a feeling of also being shafted by another occasional"ugly American" (I am reminded of a lesser reaction, from some quarters, to his brother Paul's travel book on the Pacific Islands and New Zealand).My only recommendation is to Mrs Theroux ,PLEASE next time when you are traveling,leave your husband at home!

This book says more about Alexander Theroux than it does about Estonia and Estonians! He seems to be a glass half empty person and someone who failed to get to know Estonia and the Estonians as we have done. He appears to have expected Estonia to be just like any part of the United States and, as it isn't, been thoroughly disappointed in it in every respect. I've never read such a negative book nor one that is merely a writer's self indulgence in his own misery. I gave up on it very soon and would recommend that no one wastes their money on it. The oil painting by his wife which appears on the cover says it all!It should be called "A Peripheral Ramble Through the Periphery" to emphasise how little he knows about Estonia or its people. No sense emerges of his engagement with the people or with the culture as we know it; his principal viewpoint seems to be that neither is like America and its people and culture and, therefore, not worthy of careful examination or analysis.

Hello, I feel compelled to write a review as I am an American living in Tallinn and purchased this book.It is one of the most hateful books I've ever read. There is even an entire chapter called "Why I hate Estonia", and almost every sentence starts with "I hate..." Here's how that chapter starts: "I hate the pointless cold. I hated the fact that most people are sour but consider that normal. I hated the ungrammatical '5,2 litre' alcohol content comma, when it should be a period '5.2' liter!"The author is badly uninformed about the region. Sentences like "I have heard similar things about Latvia". Riga, Latvia is a 4 hour bus ride away...Many of the authors complaints are about how unfriendly the people are. In my experience it's the exact opposite and Estonians are noticeably friendlier than Americans.At one point in the book he mentions "There is a disconcerting amount of graffiti in Estonia". Again, badly misinformed about the region. There is significantly more graffiti in cities such as Berlin, Prague, and Kiev.

Despite its title, the book "Estonia" by Alexander Theroux is not a travelogue. It is basically author's reaction to sights and sounds in Estonia, i.e. it is about Theroux himself. As an Estonian, I found a number of factual errors (that do not matter greatly, however). The book must be read with patience, despite the frequently outspoken lingo. I was disappointed with the Study Bible. It has very thin Bible paper in some sections, with a lot of bleed-through, making some of the pages difficult to read. In addition, the imitation leather cover is also very thin. But my main disappointment was in the fact that the very helpful footnotes of the 2015 Amplified Bible, which I assumed were standard to all editions of the AMP since they're even found in the compact edition, have been replaced with very general and brief footnotes in this Study Bible. As a retired pastor, I found the notes to be much less informative in the Study Bible than those found in the other editions.As a result, I have returned the Study Bible and will continue to use the other editions of the 2015 Amplified Bible.

The New (2015) revised Amplified Holy Bible is great, and I am very glad to have it. This is the AMP Study Bible in two tone brown imitation leather. I like this version better, I believe, than the previous 1987 version. I have that in the topical reference bible which is great also.This one I can highly recommend!I love the indexed topical study notes in the back much more than a regular concordance. Beautiful color maps, in text tables, maps, etc. are helpful for studying right where you are in your reading.If you like the AMP you'll love this one. There are commentary notes at the page bottoms, but not every verse so they don't take up half the page like some study bibles. This one was very well done!A GREAT BIBLE at a great price!! If you like the older AMP version I think you'll love this if you want a study bible.

I plan to purchase multiple copies to give to friends.What follows are some of the strengths of the wonderful Amplified Study Bible. I am reviewing a copy of the Brown Imitation Leather Edition.1. Fantastic easy to read 10.5 Bible text print with clear Bible book introductions and notes in a bold 8 point font.2. Helpful 150 plus page Topical Index/concordance at the back as well as an excellent Theological Notes Index which gives the reader the location of theological notes interspersed throughout the Biblical text.3. Old Testament and New Testament overview of all books of the Bible.4. The 2015 completely revised Amplified Text which features a literal base text with increased amplification in the Old Testament and streamlined/refined amplification in the New Testament. The Amplifications bring amazing clarification to the literal text!5. Quality SEWN binding which allows the Bible to be opened easily and to lie flat and makes the Bible very durable compared to cheap, glued editions of many other study Bibles.6. Flexible, Imitation Leather cover which should last a while. Hopefully, a genuine leather edition will be published in the future.7. Bold section headings throughout the text and quotation marks for all quotations.8. Pronouns for God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) are capitalized.9. Cross references within the text and at the bottom of each page.10.Literal text makes it easy to follow sermons preached from literal translations like the English Standard Version; NASB; NKJV; RSV etc.For those who are new to the Amplified Text, it essentially adds brackets throughout the text which include nuances of Hebrew/Greek implied meaning; cultural information; commentary based on the text; Proper names to clarify nouns etc.Essentially, every page of The Amplified Study Bible is like shining a flashlight on the text in a dark room! It is amazing how helpful The Amplified Study Bible is with the 2015 text of the Amplified. There are thousands of examples I could point to where this Bible helps clarify and amplify the text. A few examples will have to suffice for now:1. Exodus 4: 3 where Moses throws his staff to the ground which will later be a warning to Pharaoh, the Amplified 2015 text reads "Then He said, "Throw it on the ground." So Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a [living] serpent [like the royal symbol on the crown of Pharaoh] ; and Moses ran from it." What clarity and contextual understanding has been added within these brackets!2. Galatians 5:16 "But I say, walk habitually in the [Holy] Spirit [seek Him and be responsive to His guidance], and then you will certainly not carry out the desire of the sinful nature [which responds impulsively without regard for God and His precepts]. Notice the words "habitually", "responsive" etc.3. Psalm 23 "The LORD is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me] , [Ezek 34:11-31] I shall not want. He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. [Rev 7:17]. He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake. Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for Your are with me; your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me. Your prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; my cup overflows. The paper, binding, and presentation are wonderful. I'm not crazy about the translation itself. I thought it was going to be in 21st century American English, but it's more like the Revised Standard Version, with amplification. I wish Amazon had small sections of actual text for each of their Bibles so it would be easier to select from the myriad of available translations.

We ordered this bible March 4,2018. It is now April 16,2018 and the binding is coming apart. We are very disappointed in the quality of this purchase.

This Bible is beautiful! The font is much larger than I expected. Yes, you can see the print from the other side of the page as very light grey letters but it doesnâ€™t bother me at all. The letters on the page you are reading appear very distinct & black. The cover is soft & the book lays open effortlessly. It would be nice if the referenced citations would open a window showing the verse - Just being silly here. I wanted a book not an electronic device & it is such a pleasure to read from! Highly recommend.

For the price, I literally opened the box and and thought wow!! this is an awesome bible for this price! totally unexpected. I own a lot of different bibles so I know value and quality and this one is definitely worth the price.

I have many Bibles and they each have at least one quality I like. My Amplified Bible has all of those qualities and more. I am reading my Bible daily and am so blessed with the help to understand God's Word!
