This is why I read books. When you find that perfect combination of compelling and inspirational true stories with an almost mythical quality to them, and told with a resonant prose that flows like honey, it’s hard to put down. And this book couldn’t be a more timely offering to me, and to that part of the world that reaches for fulfillment in technology, excess, pride, and the ever-increasing barrage of consumption. Having spent time with 10 fascinating men and women in Japan that have crafted lives for themselves that exemplify simplicity, richness, fulfillment, and abundance, Couturier unearths the essence of each, and shares what is still possible with us, even in this day and age. Perhaps especially so.
I highly recommend Andy Couturier's book profiling 10 unusual Japanese people, all artists or artisans, who live simple, alternative lifestyles in harmony with nature and themselves. You might say they are all very gifted in the creative and individualistic way they live, growing their own food, etc. All of them got their ideas for simple living when traveling and living in India and Nepal.The book is very tastefully presented with lots of b/w photos of the people and their artwork and crafts.Andy's relationship with those he profiles reminded me a little of Carlos Cantaneda's relationship with Don Juan. He is trying to learn about and understand a different culture and a different way of being and living from what he is accustomed to.Actually, I met Andy about 30 years ago in Japan when we were visiting mutual friends, a couple profiled in the book, who lived in an old farmhouse deep in the mountains of Shikoku. I have to say that Andy is lucky to have hung out with all the people in his book, and we are lucky to be able to read about them!
This is a book to treasure: It is a beautifully written series of novellas, each a complete narrative of a Japanese couple who have chosen tolive off the mountainside land where they practice sustainable living. They and their neighbors care for each other and the larger community,all sharing the goal of living minimally and making art and music primary factors of joy in their lives.
My heart is happier and calmer for having read "The Abundance of Less". Each chapter is a shared relationship with interesting, creative, original people. Despite being a middle class American, I felt an easy real connection. Thank you for the hope and inspiration; it's not too late to change how we live with our earth and one another.

A very thoughtful piece about how living simply, and seeking fewer material gains, can actually make for a better life. It's hard for those of us in the rat race to let go sometimes, and it is nice to remind ourselves that there are other paths to happiness. The afterword, with information about the author, was helpful to understand why this author chose to write a book on this subject. Good buy. Interesting read. Got me thinking...
I'm over halfway in reading. It's about mountain folk who are unconventional - artists, writers, farmers, potters, anti-nuclear, etc. My kind of people. The author stays with each of them and their family, delving into their life philosophy and the course of events which brought them to where they're at now. The author also revisits about a decade later giving an update. Pretty interesting. It's about culture and lifestyle of these people holding their traditional beliefs that are quite contrary to mainstream Japan. This book isn't about trendy minimalism (although these folks are naturally minimalistic). They have very rich lives living simple and basic.
An incredible book that everyone should read. Mr. Couturier takes the reader into the homes of many wonderfully interesting people who have captured the true meaning of life in the simplicity they have attained. He demonstrates all angles of the approaches for the simplicity and through his writing inspires one to address their life to attain more peace and purpose. It is a rich gift that Mr. Couturier has given us and I feel it should be a required read for all university students and government officials especially those to elected offices. The release is timely because we all need to do more to be kinder to the planet that gives us so much. Buy one for yourself and another for a friend.
