I've been looking for more books like this -- books that touch upon the Vietnamese boat refugees. As a refugee, this was a book I could identify with even though our experiences were very different. The art is lovely. The only criticism I had of the book was that it jumped around in time a lot and some of that time jumping was confusing when reading the graphic novel. However, I enjoyed this book very much and wish there were more of it.

I have trouble reading this book because the feelings are very raw and realistic especially with illustrations. It's definitely adult book, not for children or anyone under age of 18. I didn't realize it's more like comic book which I'm not used to read and I have to read very carefully as a lot of hidden meanings and undertone, you really have to look at all the graphics carefully as there are more to it than the words. overall worth owning the book, I would not recommend kindle version.

Over the past few years, I've read a lot of books that were profound, evocative, and embedded themselves in me emotionally (most recently it was "Between the World and Me"). But this book actually made me cry, like ugly-cry. This book is beautifully illustrated (it recalls the style of "Blankets" by Craig Thompson), a bit sparse stylistically for its own effect. It touches on the darkest parts of what it means to survive, not just as an immigrant, but from our own trauma, experienced or passed down to the next generation. It speaks of redemptions, but carefully navigates that line of profundity without overwrought sentimentalism. I would lend this book to everyone if I wasn't afraid of never getting it back.

This was my first graphic novel and I absolutely loved it. I think it meant even more to me because I also am a child of immigrants. While my parents didn't experience the same type of conflict at the time they left their home country, there are things that I think all immigrants and children of immigrants can relate to. This book really spoke to me and even helped me see my own parents in a new way! It's an honest story that is beautifully illustrated, written, and presented. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

A very relatable and powerful book. Any first generation or second generation Asian-American can relate to the authors words and journey. There is a raw beauty in the pain the author manages to convey - this pain of the lives her parents lived through and the pain of her not being able to reach them until she was older. I love the illustrations and the writing was often poetic at times. I read this book in a flat hour and a half, unable to put it down. This book touches anyone who has struggled to realize that their parents are just people too, and that even though they might not always have been the best they always tried the best they could.

How amazing was this?!?! This is the first graphic novel to be about Vietnamese by Vietnamese. Honestly, I have never read a graphic novel. I'm not really that type of genre. This book had me glue to its pages from beginning to end! This book needs to be read! The art is amazing. Easier to read. Does not compromise on any Vietnamese culture for the sake of Western comprehension. It is honest and easy to digest for young adults, too.

As soon as I finished the first scene of The Best We Could Do my lips started to tremble. I knew I was in for it. This book is uniquely evocative of a time, a place and experience that many of us refugees assume is normal. It’s not normal, even if it’s a familiar refugee experience.I’m a new mom, born the same year as the author in Saigon, and we escaped on a boat one year after her family did. This book hit really close to home. Reading about the Vietnamese experience in the form of a comic book strips the experience down to its bare roots. And those roots are complex, rough, and beautiful. The Best We Could Do is an absolute treasure. I know what I’ll be giving to my closest friends this year for Christmas. Those who read it will understand the Vietnamese experience more deeply. Thanks to Bill Gates for recommending this book among his top 5 for 2017 reads!

This won the American Book Award for illustrated memoir in 2018. It was nominated for the Eisner and Harvey awards as well. Thi Bui wrote and illustrated the book. It is a memoir that bounces back and forth between 1) the birth of her son in (minimally); 2) her father's upbringing; 3) her mother's upbringing; and 4) her childhood and the family's experience fleeing Vietnam and coming to America.Ms. Bui was born in 1975 a few months before the fall of Saigon. The family stayed in Vietnam for a few more years and then fled in 1978. The escape had a bunch of false starts and then harrowing moments. The family's early experiences in America were difficult. Ms. Bui has done an excellent job at putting herself in her parents' shoes and being searing in her self-examination.By becoming a parent, she was forced to look at her own parents differently. Her father was often distant, despite being present and her mother pushed them very hard. By going back into her parents' histories, she discovers a much better and deeper understanding of them and why they are they way they are. Hence "the best we could do."Truly outstanding. An amazing immigrant story. If more Americans read this (and books like it), the current xenophobia that is rampant through many communities would diminish.

Other books I have seen focus more on psychology and personal anecdotes (such as "The Explosive Child"); this one actually helps you know WHAT TO DO. It is easy to read, giving plain-spoken, useful strategies; sometimes mentioning them comprehensively in just one paragraph. It's helped me understand my 4-year old son and given me more empathy now that I have an idea of how he's processing what's happening. Dealing with autism is almost as hard on parents as their children, and we have to re-learn how function as well. I disagree with another comment about this book not being useful for high-functioning kids. It is divided into sections such as sensory, behavior, etc., and it is very simple to skip around at your leisure to find what you need. It is a *spectrum*, with some kids having trouble with some things more than others, rather than simply "very autistic" or "a little autistic". For example, my son has supreme difficulty with transitions, feeding issues, and temper tantrums, but not sleeping problems or tactile sensory issues. This doesn't make him more or less autistic; it's just where he falls on the spectrum. It's worth having the book for whatever you specifically need. I'm very grateful to have found this resource, and will be passing it along to his preschool teacher.

Hands down, the VERY best ASD resource book I've come across. Gives tons of practical, doable, doesn't-take-a-genius-to-figure-out solutions that instantly improve the lives of your child/student with an ASD. I wish someone would have given me this book at the very beginning of our family's journey.

I am a teacher of students with severe Autism. I have recommended this book to everyone I work with, and my student's parents. It explains many of the main areas affected by Autism, and gives dozens of ideas of how to target this area. Although only one chapter is dedicated to the education of students with Autism, I find many skills to target in my daily lessons from all the other chapters.

I never leave reviews, until today. I bought this book for activity ideas to do with my autistic preschooler while I'm homeschooling. But this book covers EVERYTHING. Communications, life skills, large motor activities, not just academic ideas. It's short, to the point, and gives great ideas. After feeling like I have bought and read just about every other book regarding autistic children, this is a MUST HAVE. Along with Mary Barbera's The Verbal Behavior Approach! Both of these books give great advice and practical ideas to deal with our challenges. Good luck and much love to all the other parents out there.

I really liked the suggestions of things you can do with kids to engage them. This could be a real revelation for the entire family about how to spend real quality time with your kids, not just those with Aspergers.

Dear Amazon customers:I bought this book for a friend of mine who lives in Mexico. She had been struggling looking for helpful hints to help her son both at home and at school. She told me that the book has a lot of ideas that you can start putting into practice since the very first moment you have the book in your hands. Also, don't need to follow a specific sequence when reading the book. So, you can jump back and forth looking for what you really need. Many of the ideas are ideas that you don't even imagine they exist. She mentioned that her son was reluctant to draw pictures and she did not know why. She had always handed white copy paper to her son for coloring or drawing. Apparently, the white paper reflects to much light for the very light-sensitive eyes of some autistic children. From this book she got the idea of using a different color of paper. Her son started making drawings and painting a lot since two weeks ago. This was the first idea she put into practice and, it worked! My friend is so happy with the book!Sincerely,Miguel

This is definitely a must-read for asperger's and autism. It is easy and simple to read and understand. It has great explanations for the reasons behind the behaviors as well as what you can do to help them. I wish I would have found this book years ago. After reading that, I bought two more books for my child special ed teachers

One of the reasons I liked this book was that we received mixed input from friends and family regarding our son's diagnosis, especially since he was 4.5. This book indicated many examples of habits and behaviors that gave my husband and I 'ah-ha!' moments and it helped us feel less powerless to help our son. we knew that traditional ways of dealing with certain things did not work with our son and this book helped point out things that did.

“Talty’s vigorous history of seventeenth-century pirates of the Caribbean will sate even fickle Jack Sparrow fans. . . . A pleasure to read from bow to stern.” —Entertainment Weekly“A swashbuckling adventure . . . [the] characters leap to life.” —New York Times Book Review“A ripping yarn, worthy of its gaudy subject.”—Dallas Morning News“A sparkling and engrossing adventure narrative.”—Boston Phoenix“Fresh insight into pirates’ dens of old . . . Well-researched nonfiction that reads like a novel.” —Washington Times“Swashbuckling history at its bloody, blood-soaked best, and a mirror to our own times.”—Tom Reiss, author of The Orientalist“Morgan proves an irresistible hero. A thrilling and fascinating adventure.”—Caroline Alexander, author of The Endurance and The Bounty“Rollicking . . . with style and energy Talty tells a tale of boundless wickedness.” —William M. Fowler, author of Empires at WarReeking of authentic blood and thunder, and as richly detailed as a work of fiction, Empire of Blue Water dramatically evokes the rough-and-tumble age when pirates owned the seas. In Stephan Talty’s hands, the brilliant Captain Morgan, wicked and cutthroat though he was, proves an irresistible hero. A thrilling and fascinating adventure.”—Caroline Alexander, author of The Endurance and The Bounty“Stephan Talty’s new book serves up swashbuckling history at its briny, blood-soaked best, with enough violence and passion to keep the pages flying by. But it’s not only blood and swash: Empire of Blue Water is also a mirror to our own times, showing that attempting globalization against a backdrop of the clash of civilizations is nothing new,and that religious violence is often a thinly veiled cover for greed and personal ambition. Talty's portrait of the legendary privateer Henry Morgan is a marvelous study in contradictions—a man of astounding heroism, brilliance, compassion, and charm, who was also capable of the greatest betrayal.”—Tom Reiss, author of The Orientalist“A wickedly entertaining tale of pirates and the Caribbean seas they once ruled like kings. Epic sea battles, daring adventures, rich history, great villains and heroes alike—it’s a treasure.”—Neal Bascomb, author of The Perfect Mile and Higher“In a riveting history that reads like the best novels, Stephan Talty stylishly extricates the pirates of the Caribbean from the imprecise caricature that so often consumes them. Quite possibly the finest book on piracy this reviewer has had the privilege to enjoy. Stephan Talty has not only provided an exhaustively in-depth look at the "Golden Age of Piracy," but has thoroughly explained the WHYS it came about--from the greed of countries down to the hopelessness of the individual. The sub-plot of Spain's role in the pillage/rape of the "new world" was intensely interesting. Ultimately though, what nature gives nature takes away, oftentimes with a brutality that exceeds humanity's laughable attempts.

Despite some grammatical errors in the first few chapters, I still have to give this book 5 stars. For anyone who is a history buff, the author has no problem sucking you in making this book extremely difficult to put down. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys history, particularly pirate history and 17th century Caribbean history. All in all, a great read.

I'll be in the Caribbean for 3 weeks in March and always love to read the history of where I travel ... I have enjoyed reading about Captain Morgan and the barbaric tortures and the exploits of pirates. I keep looking up my Google Maps of the Caribbean to find out where Captain Morgan sailed. Unbelievable how brave and daring he was and how many pirates he led at one time. He ordered 500 head of cattle to be slaughtered and put on his ships for one mission. Wow - lot of food for a lot of pirates.

Tracing the career of Captain Morgan, the author provides sufficient context to understand how pirates came into prominence in establishing Jamaica. The role of the pirate is best understood in light of the social, political, and religious norms of the time. This is not a light read but is a treatise that filled in a lot of gaps in my knowledge of the 16th century.

Captain Morgan (working as a privateer for the English) and his band of brothers ravish the Spainish main. Every attack grows more daring and bold. When the Spainish colonists and soldiers hear his name they tremble in fright usually abandoning their cities and forts when Morgan and his men approach. All this ended as a result of treaties between England and Spain forbidding piracy. Captain Morgan retired to his farm on one of the islands.

There are aspects of this book I do not care for. One - he creates a fictional character "Roderick" which is POINTLESS and detracts from the narrative. The history is compelling enough. That really got on my nerves. Two - his use of buccaneer seems off to me from his definition on page 39. I know it has become interchangeable with pirate. Especially after Esquemeling published his book in 1678. I just do not care for his liberal use of the term buccaneer. Morgan was no buccaneer. He was a basically a privateer. The story overall is good. It is easy to follow. The writing style is smooth and enjoyable. The Morgan story is everything you think about when you hear the word "pirate".

I really enjoyed this book. As soon as finished, went out and bought the Illustrious Dead by the same author.Tally does a great job of blending the overall picture, with the little details which makes history come alive. I emerged from the book having a clearer understanding of how Pirates operated on a day to day basis, as well as why the Spanish Empire wasn't able to mount a better defense.

An enlightening book about the history of the Americas and the role of Captain Morgan and his buccaneers in changing the fate of Spain and England in the struggle for control of the Caribbean, Central and South America. Interesting to learn of the pirates and their system of sharing spoils among all participants. Seems like incentivizing any endeavor improves its likelihood of success

The book is a good primer for anyone looking to conduct business in China. The book itself is getting dated, and the Chinese are becoming more Westernized in their business interactions. However, it cannot be understated that any attempt by a Western business executive to show respect for the traditions, history and culture of China will go a long way to building guangxi. While many of the customs and the banqueting are going to vary in intensity as you move out of Shanghai, Shenzhen and Beijing to the other cities that are less Westernized, the fundamental cultural elements of respect, face, influence and dealing with local influencers are foundationally universal.A worthwhile read before heading to China on business.

This is a great book for someone who has to work or interact in a Chinese setting. I think that if you have not worked in East Asia before this will provide some valuable perspective for working in China or with an Chinese company. I do see that some of the ideas of the rigidity of Chinese etiquette to be changing with the years, but this is still a helpful resource. I remember that when working over there we encountered some 'impossible' problems that resolved themselves at the 11th hour. I was prepared for these problems because of this book while colleagues who did not research were taken aback. Hopefully an updated edition will be available as there still needs to be a workplace culture guide for dealings with China.

I've been going to China since 1985, and have lived in Taiwan since 1990. So I know a thing or two about Chinese culture (he said modestly). Seligman's book is very accurate and very complete. I recommend it.

I read this book in preparation for my study abroad in South East Asia. I was tasked with giving a presentation on Hong Kong.It was very informative and simple to read. At the end of each chapter it had one sentence point summary of the material.Examples of the content:It exposes the reader to ways of life that appear strange to us. For example, in America, it is up to the individual to make his way in life. In China, the individual's opinion has little weight in decision making. It is the "danwei," the work unit, who decides the best course of action in this collective thinking culture.Since the most senior employee is most likely to be "the boss" he or she should be the first to enter the room. Further more, "the bosses" do most of the talking - subordinates should remain silent unless addressed specifically.Be sure to give and receive your business card with both hands. Read the card you receive aloud to acknowledge the other party's name and rank.

This book is so very helpful to someone who's in a great big hurry to learn ANYTHING that will foster an understanding of what's good manners & what's not... and why! Every first-time business traveler to China really should read this book! Scott D. Seligman did a fine job presenting me with perspectives I don't think I could have understood as rapidly as I did, thanks to his writing style!

As I was planning an extended engagement in Shanghai I had this book recommended to me by someone who has gone to China frequently. It is very readable and well organized with good examples. The original edition was released in 1989 and the second in 1999. The forward to the 1999 edition spoke of how fast things had changed in the ensuing ten years. I wonder how much different it is 17 years later as I prepare to go?

This focus of this book is to help westerners who intend to conduct business in China - however you will enjoy reading it whether you're visiting China for business or pleasure and even if you desire simply to get greater insight into Chinese worldview and not only the appropriate way to act in different situations, but also some historical and social background which governs the way Chinese people think and act. Some actions that may have seemed strange or perhaps even offensive, won't seem that way in this new light, when you manage to look at the world a little bit thorugh the eyes of a Chinese person.Having an insight into another culture helps to broaden one's horizons as well as to prevent misunderstandings and open the way to harmonious relationships - both personal and professional. The book is filled with numerous stories from the author's past experiences and the experiences of others which help to illustrate the points the author is making. The book is not only very informative, insightful and practical, it is also very entertaining to read.

This proved to be a great resource prepping me for my first business trip to China. Short enough to be read on the flight over, and very relevant. I found that it gave me a lot of insight that my coworkers did not have during our first business interactions. Could be updated further to reflect changing business culture. However, I still found it very helpful. The book covers dress, dining, and numerous other topics. I highly recommend this for anyone who is taking their first business trip to China.
