One thing becomes very clear when reading Gramsci, regardless of what you may think or believe about his politics: he possessed a brilliant mind...and that is precisely why Mussolini and co. famously wished to "stop this mind from working..." The fascist regime was toast intellectually as long as left wing thinkers such as Gramsci were free to analyse Italian history and politics.In my understanding Gramsci puts to rest the common notion that Fascism and Communism were/are one in the same, or at least inevitably can lead to similar types of repressive societies. Gramsci causes that argument to quickly crumble because his thinking is creative and wishes the same for others. One gets the feeling that he believed that people should be free to figure out for themselves what sort of society and culture they want to live in. He represents a much more varied picture of leftist thought than other more hard-line, though no less important or interesting, thinkers such as Lenin or Trotsky. He realized how liberating free thought could be and, despite the many trials throughout his life, never gave up on that quest both for himself and for future generations.

He endorses dictatorship and I have the impression his insights regarding ideology and culture are pedestrian while he unfortunately is not very clear in expressing basic concepts. Much of it sounds like marxist gobley gook. It must be said, however, that Gramsci seems to have been a man with real integrity who gave his life to the struggle for human freedom and dignity. If youwrit REALLY know Italy in the period he was writing, I'm sure I would stand corrected in my assessment of his lack of ability to convey clearly.

This was about the most laborious read I have ever encountered. If you want to learn something about Gramsci as he deals with Neo-Marxism, stay away from this book. There's nothing relevant in it. It's a snoozer.

The book arrived on time and in new shape. As far as the contents are concerned, it should be required reading for those of us not leftists. Gramski wrote the rules by which some people live and fool others. Those being fooled already may consider it a handbook; others should use it as an antidote.

At the beginning of this slim history of skateboarding, the author makes it clear that his version will be biased, prejudiced and discriminating. Weyland has been hooked on skateboarding for more than 20 years (he is 33 years old), making objectivity all but impossible. Instead, Weyland has written what amounts to a love letter to skateboarding and its culture. He cobbles old articles and reportage from skating magazines like Skateboarder and Thrasher into a breezy narrative of the sport from its birth in 1960s California as a way for surfers to pass the time when the waves were flat to the hugely popular sport of today, regularly featured on ESPN. Along the way readers meet legends like the Dogtown Z-Boys (skating pioneers who were recently the subject of a documentary film), Steve Caballero and Tony Hawk. But the real strength of this book comes from the personal experiences he skillfully drops in the mix. He does a great job explaining how, growing up as an alienated kid, skating offered him an alternative to institutionalized jock mentality and its attendant boorishness. Through his vivid remembrances, he offers a glimpse into the rebellious skating culture in the 1980s when it was still far underground. And while Weyland lapses a bit into sentimentality over today' s commercialization of the sport, he always returns to its true spirit. Echoes many of my sentiments from the early days.As for the days surrounding my involvement, it is how I remember it, and how I intended it.That never happens, but it did in this book, and I don't even know this guy, and never talked to him. He did use some of my photos without asking me though, and I never got a dime. I can be reached through Thrashers publisher, in the event there is a check waiting for me, and no where to mail it.

Growing up in the 80s I was surrounded by skateboarding, whether it be in the form of my Mom's friend's daughter showing me how to (attempt to) ride down the street at age 10, the kids skating in the "hip town" of Hyannis, MA (which was a "city" to someone from The Cape), watching my neighbors skate and build their own ramps, watching the early skate videos, or ogling through Transworld Skate or Thrasher and wishing I'd had enough coordination to actually be able to learn what I was seeing. I found this book at the public library and thought it might be an interesting read, but I had no idea what I was in for. Granted, Weyland's writing can be very subjective and he tends to "go off" about what skating has become (as many people who have been skating their entire life can), but what he wrote isn't just his complaints about skating and the industry. There's a lot of information about the history of skating (which a lot of people who claim to skate might not have any ideas about), and also stories about what skating was like before The Circus of what is now began. What he's written gives the person who doesn't understand skating the ability to have some inkling of what it's like, and to understand that "skating" isn't just what they see, but it's a culture, a lifestyle, a thought pattern, a philosophical journey, and can even be a family. One truly interesting part of the book (for me, being a 28 year-old college professor) is Weyland's comments and thoughts about going from being "in the know" to being considered "old." I would definitely suggest this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history of the sport and the genesis of what they see before them today.

This book is absolutely loaded with memories, from us old surfers who skated pools, to the kids who skate all the parks around the country and haven't bothered to experience the joy of getting chased out of public skate venues--all of us need to read this work of art. All of a sudden, all these great books have come out about our little world: Hawk's book (HAWK, OCCUPATION SKATEBOARDER) takes us inside the life of a pro (okay, well, inside the life of a god); AGENTS OF CHANGE takes us inside the world of DC Shoes and they're all worthy of putting on our coffee tables or on our bookshelves and maintaining a little bit of history. I give this book a deep asian bow... I'll love it long time.

I found Jocko Weyland's book to be an incredible history of skating because he unearthed some of the more obscure heroes of skating (those that were not given credit in Dogtown) who hailed from disparate parts of the globe including Hawaii. I also love that the author skated with the elks in Colorado.If you are into skating or know someone who is, buy this frickin' book. It tells the whole tale!

As a lifelong skateboarder, I was stoked (yes, I said 'stoked') to see a book like this come out. And I retained my stoke during the book's introduction. The introduction could stand alone as an inspired and revelatory essay.But after slogging through the first few chapters, I couldn't go on. I found the writing style to be simultaneously dry and overwritten. A bit of a feat really. It often feels as though the author's writing style was to get through a checklist of datapoints.The Answer Is Never states data without inspiration or revelation. So while it achieves textbook status, it omits the quizes at the end of each chapter.The editing is flat, and the copyediting is dismal. Mislaid lines of text and typos abound.

Bought this for my nephew as a Christmas gift. My brother told me he really got into skating this past summer. Based on reviews it sounded like it would be perfect for him. He was so excited to receive it. It turns out he met one of the authors and apparently skates where he does and couldn't wait to show him the gift.

I purchased this as a gift for my nephew who is a dyed in the wool skating buff (takes after his dad at the same age), and who informed me that the current term is "skating"; they no longer call it "skateboarding";...learn something new every day :;). My nephew loves the book. It is small enough to take along with him, is packed with history of the sport, and is written by a true legend of the sport. I nailed it as far as my nephew is concerned!

If you love skateboarding you should buy this book. It's a nice history that is intelligently written. It talks about skateboard culture with the alienated, angry kids, and how it is so different from organized sports. It covers the early beach culture skaters, punk rock skaters, Dogtowners and the beginning of vert riding. This book is fun to read. Contrary to it's title, The Mystery Method: How to Get Beautiful Women Into Bed is more than just a book on how to get better with woman. It's a gateway into understanding, and manipulating, the fundamentals of human interaction. It's also a lifestyle and perspective changing book. I never expected that reading this book would lead me to a such a drastic life epiphany. As another reviewer pointed out, its like suddenly becoming aware of the matrix.Mystery gets into deep reasons behind why people behave the way they do, using evolutionary psychology and personal experience to back up his claims. As you digest the material you will start to be able to read and influence people like never before. You'll wonder how you could have missed so much.Mystery also devels into what it means to be truly be human and be alive. Again the goal of this book is to not just to get you better with woman but to have an overall better and more impactful life. To realize your own self worth and no longer allow your life to be hinged on the opinions and actions of others.However with all this knowledge you risk opening a can of worms. If your not careful you may lose yourself in the process and social interactions will feel less fulfilling and exciting. Mystery teaches you things that are unknown to 99% of the population, and you may at times wish you could unlearn things.However at the end of the day the wisdom, knowledge and insight you gain from reading this book far outweighs any negatives you might experience. If anything the skills you learn from this book will trickle into other areas of your life, and should you so choose, improve those areas drastically.I wouldn't recommend you reading mysterys book without first reading his colleagues Neil Strausses two books on the subject. "The Game" is what jump started the whole pickup industry and serves as a great intro to the community. It is more of story telling book. His other book "Rules Of The Game" is more of a how to book and the Style Life Challege section is meant to be a life changing program.Once you've read the aforementioned Strauss books, and completed the Style Life Challenge, you'll be more much more prepared for Mysterys techniques and insights. If the seduction community books were weighted on a scale Mystery's would be like a graduate level book, and your better of working your way up to it.But once you do, and you really began to understand and master Mysterys social dynamics and lifestyle changes you will not be disappointed. It will seem like you experience the world in an entire different and good way. Some people may even become jealous (a sign your doing good) and thanks to mystery you'll know how to handle those people. If done right you will find the best version of your self. And you'll actually be glad that your were socially awkward and sucked with the opposite sex. Because it lead you onto this road of self improvement and you'll find yourself "flying by" and suppressing the "naturals". Because you had to work hard to obtain something that came easy to others you left them in the dirt.Other essential books (if you have the time) to read is "No More Mr Nice Guy", "The Solution to Social Anxiety", "Modern Romance", "Text Appeal For Guys", "Survival of The S***test", "The Geeks Shall Inherit The Earth", "The Like Switch", "The Selfish Gene" & "The Rational Male" (volumes 1 & 2). Each of these books fits into the theme of self improvement, and understanding why people behave they way they do and how you should behave. And of course bettering your romance/game. Again I feel Mysterys Book is not meant to be read in a vacuum. It's a significant puzzle piece in finding the best "you" there is.The Mystery Method, as well as the aforementioned Strauss books, have been amoung the most influential in my life and for many other people as well. In hindsight I would have never thought that reading a few books on improving my skills with woman would lead to a lifestyle epiphany and change of such great proportion.My last piece of advice though would be to be careful who you share this knowledge with. When so many other people suck it makes it easier for you to stand out. A good magician, which is Mystery is, never reaveals their secrets.

I started reading this book on my way to my first bootcamp with Mystery. It was an eye opening experience both from reading the book (finally understanding how the world works and why women function the way they do) and with spending time in Mystery's presence, learning that social dynamics and that everything around us is just an illusion, he demonstrated this many times in many different ways, but when he stared you deeply in the eyes, his words had so much more power behind them than any book can explain with just mere letters. The book has all the knowledge he teaches, all of the steps, but the book does lack actual content, actual routines, stories, openers, etc.. these you will need to go online for or possibly read other books. Once you have the MM down, it's just a matter of getting routines, content, etc.. to learn solid game, but you need to learn the fundamentals before you start so you can positively improve. This is the fundamentals.

Markovic distills predictable human behaviors down to a "system", then show you how to use this system and apply it to the dating scene. Does it work?, yes! It helps you take your actions, and crafts them in such a way that the other persons reactions are much more positive and responsive. Is it magic?, no, but if you follow the game plan, the outcome of any social interaction will be better than if you "ad-libed" your way through it doing all the wrong things. I use the Black jack analogy. Would you hit on 17? No, the odds don't favor you, so you stay. Do you know when to double down? Can you count cards? Each or these actions increases your adds overtime. So does this method. Learn to abandon "buzz killing" bad habits, and replace them with more productive ones and watch what happens. I casual date I met at a bar, found this book in my night stand the next morning. She immediately started to gripe about this "stuff" doesn't work, etc. I assured her it does and said I can prove it to you with your answer to one question. (She took the bait, see, she was already being verbally manipulated). That question was..."Where did you wake up this morning?".

This book may be outdated and fact is it contains very cheesy lines, but it provides practical examples on how to interact with women (and men). It has helped me a lot, especially on how to “open sets”. Say what you want about the pick up community but this kind of advise helps for every kind of social interaction.

This book is neither better nor worse than other pick up manuals which are all designed to introduce you into the arts of seduction, but they give you not enough for anything practical to use. The idea is to sort of wet your appetite and convince you to buy expensive videos, workshops, etc. Does it work? It does if you are willing to spend time, effort and money. Pickup is an art or a skill, and like every art and skill requires significant learning curve. Be prepared to change your lifestyle, ideology and to devote at least 2 years of your life to this, before you start seeing definite results. Your looks and age are unimportant although grooming and lack of insecurities always matter. The better programs individually assess students and root out insecurity first. Some of the Mystery students, who created their own workshops and wrote their own books on seduction introduced new methods that are quite effective, but they all work if you devote them some time. Troost returns to the South Pacific in "Stoned with Savages" for further adventures and mis-adventures.As with his first adventure related in The Sex Lives of Cannibals, the writing is entertaining and fresh, and very unlike other travelogues and biographies. This 2nd volume is a bit more polished than the first, and covers more ground (more islands, multiple countries), but with a similar tone.It's not typical lowbrow travel humor, which usually plays off expected American audience ignorance of the "rest of the world", and bores the many of us who are not ignorant, nor is it the dry cultural observations of a guidebook.Instead, the self-effacing humor narrating the adventures and mis-adventures of author Troost and his girlfriend in one of the most obscure parts of the globe provides plenty of chuckles (and actual laugh-out-loud moments) while providing a meaningful look at unusual cultures (eg, he talks to people who experienced cannibalism), while living abroad where few people have even traveled.The writing is briskly entertaining with a conversational style, and the complete absence of "this is dumb, why am I reading this?" moments.In the era of the internet and accessible international travel, a travel narrative that isn't either humdrum or sensationalist is rare, and a humorously entertaining one is a truly unusual find. Both this and his previous book are Highly Recommended.

I enjoyed the book and went to a kava bar to try kava from Vanuatu. I was okay with the fact that it tasted like dirt because I was interested in the effect, but it did nothing more than numb my tongue. Then I was then told that it's supposed to be downed in one fell swoop. So I did that, but it just made me nauseous. Maybe one has to go to Vanuatu to experience what the author did.

Not as captivating as his first book (Sex lives of Cannibals), still funny, irreverent and some interesting facts and titbits about a part of the world which is not known to us and certainly not from such an intimate and lived point of view.

This was my first Troost book, and I found it laugh out loud funny, witty, and a light, fun, fast read. It was well worth the day it took to read it. I'm not going to suggest it was profound, thought provoking, or a must read from a literary sense, but it's one of those books that you read when you want something funny and light. It sounds like the people who first read "Sex Lives of Cannibals" were somewhat disappointed in this book. (Which just tells me that "Sex Lives of Cannibals" must be hilarious! Maybe everyone should read this one first.) Without having read that to compare to (therefore rating purely on a stand-alone basis), I found this book really enjoyable. Troost's witty humor, sarcasm, and ability to poke fun at himself make for an enjoyable read (especially between books tackling heavier subject matters). It's like taking your own mini vacation.

I read his 1st book ''Sex Lives of Cannibals'' and loved it. After reading this one, I wanted to read every book he's written. It's such delicious reading,that I read it slowly to enjoy every bite and morsel. I also would like to thank his wife for affording him the time to write these wonderful stories/books. How anyone could not love and enjoy these books is beyond me. Thank you J. for the many hours of enjoyment, education andhumor which shall stay with me long after their reading!

I love J. Maarten Troost's books. He is hilarious, sarcastic, honest and has a good sense of humor toward the disasters that arise. This is the perfect book for anyone feeling stuck in a career rut or with a wanderlust spirit. This book and The Sex Lives of Cannibals are my favorites--I keep buying them, lending them off, and having to re-buy.

Another good one from J. Martin Troost. Have a good laugh and enjoy the trip. Don't let his book titles keep you away. When I first started reading his travel adventures, I was embarrassed to take his book The Sex Lives of Cannibals to the checkout counter. But it was well worth it.

If you are a fan of the travel genre, read Troost's first book, are fascinated with islnad life, or simply dream of getting away this is the book for you. This book has some humor, adventure, descriptions of island life food, and geography, but also covers things like the politics and effect of the outside world. Where Troost really excels in his writing is taking all these aspects and rolling them into an easy to read and follow story that is also entertaining. I would recommend reading his first book, "The sex lives of cannibals" beforehand, It does end up setting this books theme and explaining some of the history.
