Before reading this book, I had made two separate attempts to learn how to use Docker. Both times I learned more than I knew before, but still not enough to roll out a stack of containers that could run a reasonably complex piece of software. There's so much buzz around Docker, that I felt certain I must just be missing something. I was right."The Docker Book" does an incredible job of slowly building on previous examples to help you get comfortable with the core concepts of Docker. I expected the book to take me a while to get through, but I was pleasantly surprised when I finished the book in just two days, and that includes working through the examples.I have already recommended this book to our Devops team at work, and will tell others who are struggling to implement Docker to give this book a read.

Very useful, well done Docker book. Good examples.Docker is amazing technology, and evolving very rapidly as this is being written in July, 2014.The author is tracking these changes and updating the ebook appropriately.However, the Amazon Kindle version is lagging behind the other ebook versions in getting timely updates delivered. Please push those updates, Amazon!

I want to thank James for writing The Docker Book and making it easy to understand for someone new to containers.As an IT manager I had been hearing all the buzz about Docker and thought it would be a good idea for me to sharpen my skills on this new technology.After reading the first couple of pages on my Kindle Fire I found it necessary to download the Kindle eReader to my PC so I could follow along on my computer.One thing you will find out very quickly is The Docker Book is a how-to guide and therefore is best read while following along on the CLI as you readâ€¦My first crack at Docker was Boot2Docker for Windows but after running into a few gotchas I opted to jump on EC2 and deploy an Ubuntu VM and follow James along step by step. Before long I had a WordPress website up and running on Docker.The only challenge I did have with the book was James was trying to offer so many options for installing Docker that it did get confusing, especially when I was trying to track down the right command to figure something out.Other than that I really enjoyed The Docker Book and even took time to document my Docker adventures on my blog.

I like the book. Overall a great read. One issue that I have (and I have the Kindle version) are the example command screenshots appear sometimes to be clipped. Example is section 5.1.1, where you are building a example Docker static web site. The wget commands return a file not found. The command scrolls to another line and it looks like a letter might be clipped off.What would help is if the author would have site where readers could download or see the sample commands.

The book is good. I am now into the more advanced chapters and my main criticism is the lack of graphics and diagrams as the examples become more complex. I am running a "consul" distributed application across three separate docker host servers and then a second distributed application that relies on consul to advertise its services. There are three host servers, three consul containers, two distributed app servers and a client. It's time for diagrams and there aren't any. Setting that aside, it's an excellent book that has introduced me into a new world.

Look no further. This has GOT to be the first computer book I have ever read where everything, all examples, command overviews, etc. have been spot on (OK I am only 33% into this book). I am so tired of being teased by samples which get me close, but not all the way. This is an amazing read as well since it speaks in a concise manner and explains everything it shows in an example, including all command switches and other useful options. If you have an interest in Docker, this is the book to get.

While i've read some docs, blogs, watched youtube videos and played with Docker, this book really brings it all together and fills many of the gaps i had. This is the first James Turnbull book I've read and i found it very easy to follow and was at the right level of detail for me (Dev Mgr).Sometimes when a technology is changing so fast like Docker, the books for it can quickly get outdated but currently this is not the case for this book as it refers to Docker 1.3 and it seems the book has had several updates.The low price also made it a very easy decision to buy and one that i certainly didn't regret. I would highly recommend to anyone interested in Docker.

A terrifically written book that describes the basics of Docker, how to create simple but useful containers. This book allowed me to quickly solve the problem of having multiple dev laptops getting wildly out of sync, forcing me to upgrade ruby versions, rvms, bundles, etc. Lots of docker tutorials exist, but I needed more context to be able to solve my (simple) problems. The answers are in this book.My own interest in Islam was kindled 10 years ago when I narrowly missed becoming collateral damage in the jihad bombing of the Australian Embassy in Jakarta in September 2004. At the time I could not understand why the nice people amongst whom I had lived for more than a decade would do such a thing.â€œWhy I am not a Muslimâ€ is the most detailed dissection of the scourge that is the Killer Cult. Warraq examines all aspects of Islam from origins to present day in painstaking detail. It is the most comprehensive book on the subject of Islam and the fate of the modern world that I have read.It should be compulsory reading for every school student and political leader in the free world, before it is too late.

After reading Edward Said's book, "Orientalism", this was a breath of fresh air. I found this title in the bibliography of Sam Harris' published dialogue on tolerance in Islam. Because "Why I Am Not a Muslim" is an overt polemic against Islam and Middle Eastern Islamic culture, Ibn Warraq is a pen-name used to avoid a potentially fatal fatwa such as that which threatened Salman Rushdie for many years.The contents of the book are organized in a comprehensible fashion and draw extensively on documented history. Warraq makes no attempt to pull any punches and his agenda is absolutely clear, so the reader can reasonably assume that in many instances there will be alternative views held by those with different agendas. The shear mass of the historical data presented was both impressive and at times bordering on the tedious. The bottom line is that Warraq shows how Islam as a religio-cultural political system with its many national permutations has put the brakes on Islamic societal progress in a great many ways in the Middle East and has ultimately brought it into conflict with the western world. If what is presented in the book is even half right, I can see that any person who accepts the Koranic premise that what is written therein is the absolute and final word of God will crash violently into the beliefs and practices of Westerners, and this explains a lot of the intolerant craziness we see in the Middle East today. This also explains the relative dearth of institutes of higher learning in the Middle East, the significant absence of scientific innovation and the near absence of literary critique such as Rushdie's "Satanic Verses".I think it would be a mistake to take this book as the complete and simplistic truth about Islam. That being said, what I have learned from reading it has helped me a great deal in understanding the driving forces that have lead to the insanity going on in the war-torn Middle East. I heartily recommend it to the person who is interested, as I am, in gaining an understanding of the roots of the turmoil we experience in our world today.Charles R. McCormick, MD

There's really no other book like this (about Islam, anyway). The only reason for giving less than one star is that--and this is by the author's own admission--the book is more like a lengthy annotated bibliography than a book. This isn't necessarily bad; it just means it's more like a thick reference book (and a very thorough one) than a fun and easy to read book. He wrote it not because he thought he could write the most jazzy and thrilling book that everyone would find a breeze to read, but because it needed to be done, and because he cared, and because he wanted to be careful and thorough and accurate. And he did such a great job of accomplishing this that I think this will be an essential secularist reading for years to come. Reading it, I learned SO many details about the Quran and hadiths, Islam and history that I did know anything about before, even as a well-read secularist and someone who had read the Quran (but none of the hadiths; it still confuses me how that works, in fact).

When I bought this book, judging from the title I thought it would be mostly a personal testimonial. I am pleased to report that it is much better than I expected, being a scholarly critique of the history and theology of Islam, from a person who was born a Muslim. Contrary to some reviewers, I did not find it difficult or too long. Indeed, I was fascinating by the entire, informative book.

These are very informational and perfect for kids. My 9 year old absolutely loves them! Some of the medical books (heart, bones, brain) are a bit out of reach for my 4 year old and 6 year old, but they still listen and love looking at the pictures. Great, great, great books!

Do not be fooled this is not geared for the age range of 6-10. At most this would benefit a first grader. I purchased for 4th graders. A very thin book that does not even give all the bones of the body. Not one i would recommend if you hope for them to learn indepth geared for this age range.

Wasn't what I expected. Feels more like a report than a book. I wanted it for my grandkids under age 10 -- not right for them.

My nephew was 5 when I gave him this book as a gift. He is a very curious child and is fascinated by learning how the body works. The pictures in this book are excellent and in a couple of years he will be able to read it on his own. Great for curious kids.

Although my grand daughter is only 5, she expressed a wish to see her bones; so, I ordered this book for her, and she enjoyed it very much.
