Review

"Michael J. Hayde has proven himself a superb researcher in his previous work.... Now he turns his attention to Martin and Lewis, assembling a staggering amount of information on their radio and television shows as well as background stories, press coverage, anecdotes, and exceedingly rare photos. If you love Dean and Jerry, you won't want to put this one down." Leonard Maltin, "New and Notable Film Books" (leonardmaltin.com)"This book offers far greater detail than even Jerry's own book on the Martin and Lewis team, and while the Lewis book is essential for offering first hand accounts, often his memory is not as accurate as Hayde's immediate research. In Side by Side we learn a lot about what makes this team tick, how their impact extended beyond the usual comedy team confines and reached a level of popularity that had heretofore not been enjoyed, even by such top level duos as Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello. As is usual with Hayde's work, this book is very thorough.... Everything about it works." - James L. Neibaur, The Jerry Lewis Films: An Analytical Filmography of the Innovative Comic (co-author)"Hayde zeroes in on the split, the aftermath, reunions beyond the headline-maker one in 1976, more lore on M&L than has ever been gathered. His coverage of Colgate Comedy days and early TV, plus radio, put you square amidst (live) action, where anything could happen, rules were routinely broken, and Dean/Jerry made their legend. It wasn't film that would define these two, features but pink tea beside radical work they did in clubs, on tubes, and before microphones....Off screen Martin and Lewis were the epic clash of inward and outward, never the twain to peacefully meet. I'm frankly surprised they lasted ten years together. Side By Side explains how, and compels, and how, from first page to last. It is a showbiz reading must." John McElwee, Greenbriar Picture Shows"With Michael Hayde's new book, Side by Side: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis on TV and Radio, a detailed, unbiased study of the team appears. Hayde is the author of previous books on Superman and Dragnet, both highlyacclaimed.... While a large portion of Side by Side is taken up with episode descriptions and reviews, thereal meat of the book comes from the biographical sections, particularly theanalysis of the continually building feud up to and beyond the team's break-upand various reunions. Hayde's distance is able to present fresh insightinto the inevitability of the break-up." - Steven Thompson, Forces of Geek (forcesofgeek.com)

This is an excellent reference guide to Martin & Lewis' work on television and radio, complete with reviews from the time as well as the best writing I've seen on the why's of their break-up. Also important is the dispelling of the myth that Dean and Jerry didn't speak to each other for 20 years until they reunited on the 1976 MDA Telethon. Detailed examples are given of the times they appeared together between 1957 and 1976 and after.

A fantastic overview of the guy's live work on Radio & TV followed up by a detailed telling of their post- 1956 reunions. As well written as it is researched. If your fan of Dino & Jer, this belongs in your library!!- Dan

Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis came onto the show biz scene like a house afire. Shortly after their debut as a team they took the country by storm. Their early work showed a couple of guys who loved working together and loved what they were doing, but that changed after a few years. This book chronicles that journey. Jerry's unquenchable ambition was not a good match for Dean's more relaxed way of doing things. But it wasn't just that...Jerry looked to Dean to fill an emotional void and Dean just wasn't capable of giving Jerry what he so desperately wanted. It's actually a tragic love story where one loves more than the other. To be honest, I always cringe a little when watching Martin and Lewis. It is basically Jerry's show with Dean looking like he wasn't fully commited. He seemed to want to be somewhere else most of the time. Yes, he is more present in the earlier years...but he seems to be loitering in Jerry's world. Here we get get the author's wonderfully researched story of their radio and TV work They were the kings of The Colgate Comedy Hour, with ratings through the roof. And I always liked thier radio show, even though it isn't considered to be a highpoint in their career. Regardless...this is a book worth your time and money. Highly recommended.

This is such an important book addition to any Martin and Lewis library. Yes, there have been biographies and autobiographies plus the excellent Jerry Lewis Films by Neibaur and Okuda. This new book does so much more than just fill in the gaps that the movie book didn't. Yes, it is the exhaustive and complete story and analysis of the entire run of their classic Colgate Comedy Hour shows as well their other television appearances and the full history of their radio show... but in addition to this, the book also ends up telling the story of the full run of the manic and volatile Martin and Lewis partnership! And it tells this riveting story honestly and impartially, not throwing anyone under the bus or passing judgement, but painting a real picture of exactly what happened back then. It's superbly presented with a wealth of very rare photos and ends up being a real page turner, especially when the drama of the various feuds escalates the narrative. I just loved this book and it had me running to my DVD collection again and again to rewatch specific Colgate Comedy Hours after reading about them. If you are fascinated by and a fan of the Martin and Lewis partnership, this terrific book is a MUST for your library.

Loved it

The Lost Boy: A Foster Child's Search for the Love of a Family, by Dave Pelzer

From Library Journal

Following A Child Called It (Health Communications, 1995), which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and appears frequently on high school reading lists, this is the second in a planned trilogy from motivational author and speaker Pelzer. Here he tells his story from the time he left his abusive mother and alcoholic father, through his experiences in five foster homes and juvenile detention, and how he eventually made it into the Air Force. He was a defiant, rebellious boy who, despite his background and personality, managed to endear himself to many guardians, social workers, and teachers. Pelzer writes in an honest, sometimes rambling, style; he is never bitter, and his story will find many sympathetic readers. However, he leaves many questions unanswered (which may appear in the third book), dealing with his adult-life relationships, his son, the mother of that child, and the ways he turned his life around. This is sure to be popular among students and readers who await a sequel to A Child Called It. Well recommended.?Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, Pa.Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

About the Author

A retired Air Force crewmember, Dave played a major role in Operations Just cause, Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He was selected for the unique task of midair refueling of the then highly secretive SR-71 Blackbird and F0117 Stealth Fighter. While serving in the Air Force, Dave worked in juvenile hall and other programs involving "youth at risk" throughout California. Dave's exceptional accomplishments include personal commendations from former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. While maintaining a rigorous, active-duty flight schedule, Dave was the recipient of the 1990 J.C. Penney Golden Rule Award, making him the California Volunteer of the Year. In 1993 Dave was honored as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans (TOYA), joining a distinguished group of alumni that includes Chuck Yeager, Christopher Reeve, Anne Bancroft, John F. In 1994 Dave was the only American to be selected as one of The Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP), for his efforts including child abuse awareness and prevention, as well as for instilling resilience in others. During the Centennial Olympic games, Dave was a torchbearer, carrying the coveted flame. Dave is currently working on a book based on overcoming obstacles and achieving one's innermost best, as well as on the third part of his trilogy, entitled, A Man Named Dave. When not on the road or with his son, Stephen, Dave lives a quiet life at the Russian River in Guerneville, California, with his box turtle named Chuck.

I love this book so much. While I have some problems with how "The System" was done back then, that has nothing to do with how awesome this book is. I just got really angry when his mother was able to see him and be able to know where he lived. Of course, that could of been how it was in the 70s and why was she never arrested for the crimes she committed. That's something that can't be changed, it just frustrated me. But again, this is an amazing book. Any person who works with abused children should read it because it'll make you think about how you work with children and anyone who doesn't should too because foster care should not be such a taboo. It may not be pleasant to know about what happens to children, but turning your back on it doesn't make it go away.

Wow. What a terrible child abuse story but what an amazing man Dave Pelzer is to overcome such horrible atrocities in his childhood and life then grow up to share his story, help others and become an award winning author and public speaker! I have all 3 books he wrote on the subject of his childhood thru becoming an adult and recently purchased "A Brother's Journey" by Richard Pelzer about one of Dave's sibling and what he went through after Dave was removed from the house and his brother took his place at the hands of a terrible, cruel monster... their Mother! This book, "The Lost Boy", covers Dave's life until the time he's removed from the house at age 12. Prepare yourself because it's horrifying the things this poor boy went through... Dave captures everything in vivid detail which makes this book a page-turner you won't be able to put down... I read his first book, "A Child Called It" in a little over one day I was so engrossed in it and needed to know what happened, then what happened next, which is how I bought this book and the 3rd in the series, "A Man Called Dave". This book I also read in a little over one day... it's a book you won't be able to put down - actually, I highly recommend you buy all 3 books because you won't be able to stop reading until the very end, when he makes it to adulthood and becomes settled in life and has his 2 loves - his wife and son. Excellent choice to buy - but like I said, get all 3... I'll comment about his brother's book once I finish reading it...

As a survivor of child abuse myself I recommend this memoir to every survivor of child abuse. Learning that Dave had a successful life after being abused helped me to feel better and to have more hope for a brighter future for myself.

After reading A Child Called It, I knew I had to read more of David's story. I had to find out what happens after he is rescued from his mother's house. You would think that things would finally start to get easier for David now that he is free from his mother's tyranny, but they don't. He just gets a new set of problems. The Lost Boy chronicles his life from age 12 to 18, and his search for a home and for people to love him.Just like with A Child Called It, I read this book in one sitting. I simply could not put it down until I knew that David was going to be okay. I was so sad reading about what he has to go through as a foster child, especially how he just wants to be loved.Ultimately, the book ends on an uplifting note. David's courage and strength of character are to be admired. He simply never gives up! I will most definitely read the third book, A Man Named Dave. I just have to know more about David's journey. I would recommend this book to anyone. It's a fast, moving, powerful read.

This book is a follow up to Pelzer's first book. Although it's not a fun read because of the subject matter, I found it extremely worthwhile. I would recommend it to anyone seeking a greater understanding on the effect of an abusive home on a child and how the experiences they have there don't necessarily cease when they're moved to another location.

David’s story is phenomenal to say the least. He did an amazing job of exposing the inner thoughts of a child moving from foster home to foster home while doing their best to live a good and “normal” life. His perseverance and resilience is inspiring and as a social worker, I am so thankful that he shed light on the heartache workers experience while working with foster children. Workers use an imperfect system to try and protect kids from any further trauma, and David’s story gives such a real picture of what that experience is like for the child. I would recommend this book to anyone working in child welfare and who has a heart for children.

My daughter suggested I read "A Child Called It ". She hates reading, so I figured if she's telling me to read any book, it must be good. Boy was she right. I had a hard time reading both books. As a mother of two children, It made me sick to hear what David went through as a child. Of course I had to read " The Privilege of Youth " once I was done with " It " to see how his story ended. I wanted to meet this " Mother " myself to shove her around a little and I don't have a mean bone in my body. It made my heart hurt to hear things like this really go on to innocent babies. I loved both these books and advise anyone and everyone to read them. I loved at the end how people in his life spoke about him today and how proud of him they are. It makes me proud of him and I don't even know him.

This book gives you an idea on how things that are done wrong to others go unnoticed for years. Some people tend to block things out of their mind and ignore the fact that some people do cry out for help. When done wrong by a family member things can become confusing and even though a person may be ill no one should have to go through life without love and emotional support. I am a firm believer that there are many toxic people in this world today and the only advice I have is to never let a toxic person have control over your mind. This book is awesome and I appreciate the author for sharing his story. When reading his books you cant help but buy the other ones. It takes courage and most of all mind control to go through what he went through. May God continue to bless him and the people who helped him through that horrible situation.
