Only one other book has affected me so strongly, and that too was written by this author (My Lady of Deception). Christi Caldwell puts her heart and soul into the world and characters she creates. The emotion is real, the characters believable, and her stories fresh and unique. As you read her words, it’s so easy to visualize the scenes playing out before you, and you are drawn into their world, hearing their voices, and feeling each and every emotion. And in “The Vixen”, so much emotion!Connor Steele and Ophelia Killoran are like no other couple. As children they struggled through their fears on the streets of St. Giles, their paths crossing briefly, and each time one reaching out in a single gesture rescuing the other. The final time, his sacrifice, saving her. And then... “he was there, always, buried in her mind”.They meet again as adults, each carrying with them hidden memories of the monsters and secrets of their past. Connor, rescued by the Earl of Mar and now one of London’s top investigators, is determined to rid London of the evil and brutality he has known and seen. Ophelia, a child of the evil Mac Diggory, has survived the fear and pain of living under his power, and now a strong, beautiful woman, she strives to save other children from the streets. They’re alike in many ways due to what they experienced in their young lives. Upon meeting again and as the bond grows, they will need to overcome guilt they carry, doubts of who they’ve become, and learn to trust each other.Ophelia and Connor’s story was heart wrenching and beautiful. A story of love between a man and a woman, as well as a strong powerful love of family, I can’t put into words how exceptional this book is, and highly recommend it. Brilliant!

The Vixen:Another fantastic story from the queen of regency, ChristiCaldwell. Ophelia & Connor’s story takes you on a journey from when they are kids surviving on the harsh streets of London, who save each other and where debts are paid. To when the investigation into a missing child brings them together as adults. To say you are put through an emotional wringer is no understatement. Both are shocked to see each other & what each have become in adulthood. Ophelia, middle sister to Devils Den proprietor Broderick Killoran, who ventures into the dark, dangerous streets at night to rescue vulnerable children. Connor, who was adopted by a powerful Earl & become a respected investigator. He is hired by a lord to look into his son’s disappearance, long ago thought killed in a fire that claimed his mother blamed on the Lord. Though his investigation he crosses paths with Ophelia who is pushed into society by her brother to make a match with a man of station. They each find long ago feelings for one another are brought to the surface, they fall in love. Connor’s adopted father does not approve of Ophelia & wants Connor to wed his widowed, penniless goddaughter. This is the most emotionally charged part of the book. If you want to know how it ends please read this fantastic story, be prepared to use a box of Kleenex though!I cannot recommend this book enough, just when I think Christi can’t get better she delivers another amazing story, her best book yet. Remember love always prevails.

It is not often that I sit and cry while reading a "romance" story. Well, Christi Caldwell pulled out all the bells and whistles in The Vixen. We have Connor, a street boy who was rescued by Ophelia when they were children, and then years later he returned the favor to Ophelia. Connor was adopted by a nob after offering himself up to save the young girl from Newgate. Ophelia never forgot him! She was the daughter of the meanest, most brutal man ever. She suffered mental and physical abuse, she was broken. This story is about how these two people meet again years later. What is incredible about this particular story is the abject pain and suffering these people live through. Their childhood haunts them. Connor deals with his pain by investigating situations for the rich. Ophelia by saving youngsters from the street...but it isn't until they are both faced with the very worst that life can hand them that they are both saved. This is a story of depravity, loss, forgiveness and pure love. I believe this book is a cut above all others. A read that will tear you up a bit as you suffer along with these characters, and then bring you joy as they find happiness.

Christi Caldwell continues to amaze!Ophelia Killoran – the tough street rat with a will to survive and no love for the peerage.Connor Steele – the orphan who got away from the streets and given a better life.Their lives took different paths, but fate has thrown them together again.Ms. Caldwell puts a depth to her characters that is unparallel. The Vixen is no exception. As she peeled away the layers of Ophelia and opened Connor’s eyes to reality, my heart ached. And the prison palm reading….I BAWLED! I don’t think a scene has ever affected me as much as this one. Throw in a few surprises, extraordinary secondary characters and you have a 5+ read.I can’t wait to see how Ms. Caldwell tops this one.

I suffer from OCD and this is my first time reading a book from someone who has been there. Jennifer Traig’s humorous recollection of her childhood actually made me laugh out loud constantly while reading her book. Sometimes it’s important to laugh at yourself! Highly recommended!!

As a teenager, memoirist Jennifer Traig was one screwed-up girl. At various times, she suffered from anorexia and an acute form of obsessive compulsive disorder, scrupulosity. The product of a religiously blended family, she had to discover her own identity as a Jew, often with bizarre definitions of prayer and practice. Deeply introspective and yearning for intellectual stimulation, she grew up in a conservative, stultifying rural Northern California community. Nothing worked for her. Yet, her observations are side-splittingly funny and she wastes not one drop of energy on self-pity. "Devil in the Details" will probably obtain a cult following and should be required reading for any female teenager given to dramatizing every crisis in her life. There is little actually humorous about Traig as an adolescent. She drives her parents to distraction with her constant regimen of hand-washing, a quasi-kosher diet that reduces her to stick-figure proportions and a series of arcane, tragic-comic religious observances. Her sarcastic and edgy sister, Vicki, provides a welcome contrast to the withdrawn and weird Jennifer. However, Traig turns dust into diamonds; her quirky, disoriented life has a ruthless order to it. What appears out-of-control to a dispassionate observer makes sense to the ritual-bound author.Traig reminds us that the early 1970s provided no psychological answer to OCD, a syndrome that didn't even have a name at the time. There were no meds to mellow out those with the disorder, and Traig humbly and simply determines to cure herself. She is at her best when she describes herself in a self-deprecatory manner, and since wit exists in practically every paragraph, the memoir glistens with understated insight and induces real laughter. When the author finally comprehends that others have had enough of her antics, she resolves to stop the behaviors. For the better part of her high school career, she careens between self-induced sickness and health.Traig's postulated need for self-help may not sit well with a current generation increasingly dependent on chemical solutions to emotional problems. The author wisely notes that her parents' endless patience and acceptance enabled Traig to find her own path to health. The entire family seems to understand that life is an erratic roller coaster ride and having perfect children is far too overrated a goal in the first place. Consequently, Traig only indirectly chooses her own path to recovery; her parents' unwavering (if unspoken) belief in their daughters exists as a crucial positive variable."Devil in the Details" exudes a joy in living. Whether it be the author's descriptions of learning to drive, her dissection of the mixed-blessings of a Jewish/Christian household at holiday time, or the universal discontent felt by the alienated during high school, the memoir has both grit and grace. Jennifer Traig clearly loves language, and her writing is rich in memorable metaphors and captivating alliteration. As unique a teenager as she was, Traig's story resonates with universal appeal.

I happened to see Jenny Traig read in San Francisco, and picked up her book on a whim. What a treat! I can see why another reviewer found the book too harsh, but it happened to hit my funny bone just right, over and over and over again (and over. Wash your hands!). The details of her life are so sad and so terrible that all you can do is laugh hysterically at her misfortune. One of the book jacket reviews said that the author does not lapse "even for a moment into self-pity." This is true. However, I would recommend that Ms. Traig try more for moments of genuine and sadness and joy in her next work. This book definitely stands on its own. But there are hints of real pain there - she writes that she never felt like she belonged to her family, compares her relationship with her sister to the Bible's Esau and Jacob, admits she was anorexic. While it's great to be able to squeeze humor from stuff like this, it's even greater to be able to acknowledge the real sorrow behind it too. I think the author is up to the task. I look forward to her next book.

This was the first book I've read by a person with OCD. I'm so glad the author had a sense or humor about her disability. It really helped get through the parts that were objectively sad. She is VERY funny.

Every woman who actively manages their anxiety/depression/OCD/worry should read this. It is insanely relatable and reminds its readers that we are only human, and are not alone in our string of catastrophic thoughts. Without making light of the daily ruminations of anxiety and OCD, Jennifer paints a hilarious picture of what it's like to deal with OCD; most notably fully knowing that what you are doing to calm your compulsions is not logical, but has to be done nonetheless. Her descriptions of the situations she found herself in are truely clever and one of a kind, and will have you literally laughing out loud from chapter to chapter.

Review

"Wry and adroit." — The New Republic“A highly original and fascinating exploration of what we might think of as ‘changeless change’—the kind of innovation that simultaneously upends current practices and studiously protects existing wealth and power inequities. Through four well-chosen and emblematic case studies, Aschoff tackles this slippery subject with confidence and subtlety, providing readers with key intellectual tools to separate fact from fiction.” —Naomi Klein, author of This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate “Nicole Aschoff expertly dissects the magical thinking behind America’s idolatry of the invisible hand. In a series of lively and closely argued case studies, she lets readers see the threadbare state of our rationales for the market’s uncontested sovereignty. And just as impressively, she urges us not to be daunted by the challenges ahead.” —Chris Lehmann, author of Rich People Things: Real-Life Secrets of the Predator Class “Nicole Aschoff has skewered the high priests and priestesses of our most unshakable religion: capitalism. Anyone persuading you to ‘lean in,’ engage in ‘conscious capitalism’ or admire philanthropists will be (rightfully) upset by Aschoff’s takedown of some of the big-name ‘ethical capitalists’ of our era: Sheryl Sandberg, Bill Gates, Whole Foods’ John Mackey. Aschoff takes apart the platitudes of liberal capitalism and offers a solid set of alternatives that stress the collective over the individual, people over profit, and real narratives over cover stories.” —Nina Power, author of One Dimensional Woman“The New Prophets of Capital is intellectually serious without succumbing to critical jargon, and Aschoff makes her points both thoughtfully and rigorously.”—Boston Globe “Straightforward, concise, and impressive.” —Counterpunch

“The New Prophets of Capital” by Nicole Aschoff is a powerful socialist critique of ‘philanthrocapitalism'. Ms. Aschoff is a well-respected lecturer in sociology at Boston University and an editor at Jacobin magazine. This succinct, well-crafted and highly accessible book will interest everyone concerned about attaining real (versus illusory) social progress in our time.Ms. Aschoff writes individual essays on today’s leading philanthrocapitalists including Sheryl Sandberg, John Mackey, Oprah Winfrey and Bill Gates. In each essay, Ms. Aschoff fairly describes how these powerful people propose to use their wealth and power to make the world a better place. To be sure, the goals are laudable even if the thinking is seriously flawed.Sandberg believes that women who attain corporate leadership positions will naturally choose to make the workplace better for women. Mackey thinks that ‘conscious capitalism’ is environmentally sustainable. Winfrey seeks to empower women as individuals; and Gates wants to bring the purported benefits of free markets to deliver improved health care and education services to the world’s poor. The problem of course lies with the philanthrocapitalist’s errant framing of these issues as problems that must be solved by capitalism. To begin, Ms. Aschoff cites the example of Marissa Meyer to explain that female CEOs are no less inclined than male CEOs to cut worker benefits when corporate profits are put under pressure. Ms. Aschoff reminds us that the profit motive makes capitalism inherently hostile to the planet; even when intense retail competition has forced some of Mackey's Whole Foods workers to subsist below a living wage. Ms. Aschoff insists that Winfrey’s therapeutic message of individual empowerment cannot substitute for a job market that offers little opportunity and even less satisfaction to workers. Finally, Ms. Aschoff critiques Gates for scapegoating public education when the achievement gap can be best explained by income inequality (and thus cannot be solved by pitting teachers against each other in ruinous competition).Ms. Aschoff suspects that philanthrocapitalists have garnered attention because we live in problematic times. However, Ms. Aschoff’s impeccable research, analysis and reasoning suggest that we cannot surrender our democracy to the ideological whims of the one percent. Instead, the author encourages us to struggle for a system that might better serve the needs of everyday people; our demands might reasonably include free higher education, single-payer healthcare and a minimum basic income. No doubt we have a world to gain when, with the aid of Ms. Aschoff's writing, we can debunk the false promises of philanthrocapitalism and struggle for real justice.I highly recommend this outstanding book to everyone.

Nicole Aschoff has written a lucid book exposing the pro-capitalist hucksterism of some of America's richest and most respected leaders and celebrities. Her takedown of Oprah is worth the price of the book alone. My only criticism is that Aschoff should have added a chapter on Kim Kardashian. Kim, of course, is a cutting-edge capitalist; laughing her way to the bank with gullible Americans believing that they can be her, and have it all. Overall, a great book with a relevant message.

Great product!

Five stars for Aschoff! An easy read into the four reasons why you can't solve capitalism with capitalism. Good for anyone looking for enlightenment but doesn't want to dig too deep.

This is a book in the Jacobin / Verso partnership, which puts together one of my favorite magazines with my favorite radical publisher. The books in the series have all been short looks at capitalism in the modern society, from teaching to writing to prostitution. This book comes after several people who have tried to make changes in the relations of capitalism without changing the intrinsic nature of those relations. So it covers Oprah, Bill Gates, John Mackey, and Sheryl Sandberg. Each of these people has ideals that some might see as admirable, but are instead just capitulations to capitalism and not a direct challenge to it. She digs medium depth on all four of these people, and show that the greater goal is not met. I am more familiar with Gates and Oprah, as most people will be. Gates changed from uber-nerd to someone who wanted to save the world through elimination of disease and improved education. Oprah likes to hold herself up as an exemplar of pull yourself up by your bootstrap ideology. Both approaches are limited in their reality by the nature of economic and social relations that we call capitalism. Their very uniqueness shows the limits to capital, in that the mythos they perpetuate is limited by a confluence of happenstance that was beyond their control. Even if, like Gates, you ultimately want to put back the extraction of the resources you were able to affect through being a good programmer at the right time, there are still frictions in the system, and you will never be able to full give back. Your limits are also in part based on your focus -- Gates uses the market system to try to “Reform” schools; bypasses the state to eliminate diseases. Mackey want to make a smarter market system, but even with his firm’s growth, even if it were a wonderful alternative to the WalMarts of the world, it doesn’t scale and just reinforces the privilege of the Whole Foods Shopper over any other consumer. The first essay in the book is the most troubling to me, since I have written positively of Sandberg’s “Lean In” crusade as trying to do the best within the capitalist system, even acknowledging Sandberg’s privilege of trying to make changes from the top. Aschoff and I have read a lot of the same writers, and she shows me the errors of my ways in being optimistic about the potential for change. Sandberg is focused on professional women and ultimately will only make incremental changes. Real change has to come from the bottom. Sandberg wants women to lean in, but the real goal is to lean against – and that is not just putting the onus for change on women, but it is the necessity of all people who want change to make a more equitable system. The book is short, but it is in the vein of Rosa Luxemburg, showing that yet again, reform is accepting the contradictions of the capitalist system, where real change is system change.
