Review

I love this little book.... Have you ever heard of Howell Island Conservation Area? Did you know that Howell Island Conservation Area has a 3.9 mile loop that is jogging stroller accessible? Me either! That is this entire book - full of hiking trails that are rarely known and very close to the St. Louis, Missouri area. (Becky Davenport The Missouri Mom)

I was so excited to finally get my hands on this book. With two kids ages 6 and 10 and a husband who is a reluctant hiker, I am always looking for ways to encourage them to get outdoors, but since we've moved from Southern California to St. Louis, it seems much harder. This book is full of ideas for new places to explore. Sometimes you're feeling like a bushwhacking adventure up a mountain, and other times you just feel like a short stroll on a wide, gravel path, and this book makes it easy to find exactly what you are looking for.I expected a great list of hikes and simple write-ups on what to expect and how to find the trailheads. What I didn't expect were the easy to follow maps and bonus content about local geology, plant life, etc. These unexpected features let me enrich my kids' experience. I can let them use the maps to navigate, and we can talk about the science of what we observe on the trail. If you live in St. Louis and if you have kids, even if you don't think of yourself as a hiker, you need a copy of this book. This has really helped me get my kiddos and my husband outdoors and enjoying nature, and as a Girl Scout troop leader, I know that when scouting starts up again with the new school year, it will help me find ideas to get my troop outside, too. Love this book.

Well documented book with practical hikes for the whole family. Would recommend it for anyone in the St Louis area or for visitors interested in hiking. Great product at a reasonable price.

Great book to show all th parks in the area. Shows which parks have bathrooms & are accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

Very interesting & handy!

The range of hikes covers a large swath of Eastern Missouri and Western Illinois. You can find hikes for people with mobility issues or health issues. The author includes pictures of the most of the hikes with her and her friends to give you a feel of the terrain you'll face as well as maps and information about services near each hike. There's good information here for people who live near St. Louis, of course, but also good information for people who live in Chicago or Indianapolis or Memphis who are willing to drive a couple miles to try some new hikes. While geared toward hiking with children the information is pretty useful for all hikers with helpful lists and reminders of hiking pitfalls and joys throughout. There appears to be a whole series of these books covering other areas of the country. Maybe they should make a "Best Hikes" passport to go along with those National Parks ones.

I used to hike a lot when I was single, but then you get busy with kids and it doesn't happen any more. Real glad I found this book because it caused sort of a lightbulb to go off in my head. All the hikes I did in my 20's were so intense that it didn't occur to me how relaxed and fun hikes can be for kids. This book showed me where all the shorter and less intense trails are, and my kids really surprised me with how much they loved going. It was a great opportunity to just chat with them and nature really is fascinating for children, it's sooooo nice to see them take real interest in something that's not on a computer screen. I'm glad this book gives as much detail as it does about the trails because I'm looking forward to slowly increasing the length of the hikes as the kids get older.

Love this hiking guide! We have three kids 7, 5 and 2 and getting them outside and active can be a challenge. This book is everything! Very helpful tips on traveling to the best spots for hiking in and around the STL area from an expert hiker with three kids of her own. Read this before you go so you don’t miss anything at your regular favorites or use it for inspiration to visit some places you’ve never been before!

Even if you don't have kids this is a great & detailed guideline to easy hikes & walks around the area. Before now, I've had trouble finding good centralized resources on that - but no longer!
