Review

“This groundbreaking book is a comprehensive manual on the joys and sorrows of aging. In this sense, Aging for Beginners does double duty. For those who fear the sorrows that inevitably accompany aging—from the loss of loved ones to the loss of physical and perhaps mental stamina—the book offers practices for accepting and even embracing these sorrows as part of the human journey. And for those who fear that getting older necessarily brings with it a lessening of life’s joys, the book illustrates that this need not be the case, offering many tools and practices for finding and nourishing that joy. Aging for Beginners has been a great help to me personally. I highly recommend it for people of all ages.”    (Toni Bernhard, author of How to Be Sick)“In Aging for Beginners, Ezra Bayda provides wise, caring guidance in turning toward the realities of aging, sickness and death, showing us how to find meaning and authenticity—and even thrive—in their presence. Bayda balances honoring their inevitable pains and complexities with providing powerful, concrete practices that can help immediately. We are all fortunate to have such a ‘beginner’ to guide us on this important journey. If you find yourself growing older, this book is for you.” (Lizabeth Roemer, Ph.D., co-author of Worry Less, Live More and The Mindful Way Through Anxiety)“Ezra Bayda shares his personal experience of aging, offering glimpses into a kaleidoscope of challenges such as helplessness, grief, depression and physical pain. Written on a foundation of psychological insight and raw personal honesty, Aging for Beginners is a roadmap for those who wish to embrace aging as an essential path for their own spiritual journey. Drawing on decades of spiritual practice, Bayda offers practical exercises and meditations for the trials and tribulations that many of us will face as we move through the final chapters of our lives. In order to fully explore the profound issues of birth and death and the journey in between, we need the type of guidance this book offers.” (Gregg Krech, author of The Art of Taking Action)

In his new book Ezra Bayda explores the aging process with his usual clarity and power. With wisdom and a genuineness based in his own experiences and struggles, Mr. Bayda addresses issues including anxiety, fear, depression, grief and loss, loneliness and helplessness, and physical pain.....and offers real, concrete techniques for working with them all. In spite of the potential heaviness and darkness of these topics, we are left with a sense of hope: in embracing the inevitable; in recognizing the benefits of reflection and "the deep satisfaction of occupying a space without an agenda"; and in living increasingly from kindness, gratitude, and the love that connects us.

Aging for Beginners is the 7th book by the accomplished Zen teacher and practitioner, Ezra Bayda. Together with his long-time practice partner and wife, Elizabeth Hamilton with whom he runs the Zen Center of San Diego, Ezra sounds out some important themes to help us all navigate the sometime daunting territory of our own aging. He has many useful and encouraging things to say about such themes as coping with grief and loss, dealing with loneliness, helplessness, and physical pain, as well as searching for meaning and cultivating connectedness, kindness and gratitude. Most importantly, he reminds us often that we are all beginners when it comes to aging, no matter how young or old we happen to be. Here, he echoes one of Zen’s main teachings, that actually we are all beginners in all things, as life is always and only happening now. He writes, “Truthfully, there are really no big secrets on the spiritual path—but if you remember nothing else, let it be this: with whatever arises, whether we like it or not, the main thing we can do is experience and work with whatever our life is, as it is, right now.” To make this more real and embodied in our own experience, Ezra presents more than a dozen practical and clearly written meditation exercises, each of which can be engaged in easily by anyone willing to give them a try. Rest assured, the meditations have all been “pre-tested” by Ezra and Elizabeth and their many students. And they work.

Dear Ezra (pardon my informality),The book Aging for Beginners is one of the most helpful books I have ever read. I am 73 and dealing with a cold virus. In the scheme of things, not the most serious, but because of your advice, I am using this illness to help me work with myattachments to comfort and control, let alone to my body. Your phrase "inwardly free" was so helpful to me in describing what I am working toward. This morning, after several days of not reading but just pondering, I felt compelled to open to where I had left off - page 152.I've been puzzling about why during this illness the only time I feel satisfied is when I am working on my memoir about my ten years in psychoanalysis. It seemed odd until I read your idea about making meaning. That is what I'm doing and it helps me to know this.I do hope you receive this and accept my gratitude for this book and your courage to continue working on it when you felt you weren't quite ready. Sometimes I feel that about my memoir writing but feel called to continue as I think I have insights to offer.Thank you SO much! Oh - the other thing is your recommendation to meditate for longer was a challenge I took. I've been meditating with Susan Piver and the Open Heart Project for several years and usually had been sitting for 20 minutes. Now on occasion, I go an extra 10 and that has felt important in many ways. With great respect,Nicola Mendenhall

If I had to choose only 10 books to take with me wherever I go, this would be one of them. I love and learn from all of Ezra Bayda's books, but this is my favorite. He is never above the fray. His struggles are Everyman's struggles. He presents Zen in the deepest yet most accessible way. This book is certainly about aging, but I have given it to young adults and they resonate with it. A very important book!

Anyone can read this book and benefit from Ezra Bayda's lucid, on-point, and humbly offered insights, even if aging is not their particular concern. Offering a clear account of the difficulties that come with older age, Bayda places these in the wider context of our life, our unexamined mental habits, and the annoying fact that we're not here forever. He never sugarcoats anything. He fully acknowledges that working with fear, loss, pain, despair, loneliness, feeling marginalized, etc. can be challenging—but in a good way: this is actually a very uplifting book. Throughout “Aging for Beginners” are meditations and practices that anyone can do—not just meditation types—and they bring with them a practicality and accessibility that I found enormously encouraging. A book for all who are aging, or think they might be in the future. ;-)

This is the first book I’ve read that really speaks clearly about both the difficulties and the benefits of aging. Ezra helps us to lean into our fear and pain as we face the reality of impermanence and in so doing he helps us open to the joys of connecting in this fleeting experience of life. Seniors will find comfort in having a companion guide for this chapter of life but all age groups could benefit from the teachings.

"...there is a big difference between the thought, 'this is painful' and 'this is terrible.'" For me, this illustrates the precision and clarity in Ezra Bayda's book. His direct and personal communication regarding how to live with more awareness and acceptance is invaluable and is combined with helpful techniques. I recommend it.

so many excellent tips and suggestions and meditations to be used to accept and embrace all the facets of aging; physical decline and pain, loss of a loved one, aloneness. and not only was it practical and spiritual but it is written by a man in his mid-70's who has had his share of surgeries and cancer and complications and chronic pain. so everything he wrote about comes from experience. wonderful book.
