The book starts off well enough describing the basic concepts involved in producing software using wpf. It's great information but you'll soon find youself saying, "ok, but where's the code." At the end of Chapter 3 you get a code snippet which will generate an error message when you type it into your own little sample program. Then in short order you get more code snippets which build on the previous code. After that code snippets will be thrown at you left and right without much context regarding how they fit into the application. Due to the lack of information, the code snippets are basically pseudocode that illustrate the concepts but don't provide a lot of help in the actual business of writing a program.Typically, taking a look at the completed code helps to provide some clue as to where the author is going. In this case, taking a look at the included code makes you want to heave the entire book out the window. First, it doesn't compile, always a red flag. Second, it is very complex. The complexiity would be fine if it were adequately addressed in the book. It isn't. If you like being frustrated and discouraged in your attempts to use MVVM, then get the book, otherwise avoid it or send it to an enemy.

If you are looking for in-depth and thorough coverage of MVVM, then I would say look elsewhere. If you are looking for a good introductory overview of the Line of Business applications, then this book is for you.O'reilly had the book listed at 250 pages, Amazon at 224. Including the index it is at 201, so it is a very short read. On the other hand, it is a very cheap book.I liked that the tools used in examples where Microsoft tools. The open source tools where introduced, but Microsoft tools where also introduced. For example Unity and Entity Framework where introduced in the book. A lot of books nowadays only introduce the open source tools available.I found the patterns examples in the Overview of Patterns tables a little silly. Flyweight Example: A=FWFactory.Get("A"); That is it.... Uhm?Although the book is very short it hits on a lot of topics. Most are presented with a simple example and you gain a basic understanding of the topic.The book does do a good job of introducing the key elements in a Line of Business application. Will this be the only book you need to start developing enterprise level applications, no. It will however introduce you to the concepts you need to understand in order to build them. From their you have the option of going and learning more about them. It does do a good job of putting them all together for you in the right context.It does a decent job of introducing MVVM, but I feel it is in the title to sell more books. The book could have just been titled "An Introduction to building Line of Business Applications with .NET".At the time of this review there is no code available for download. Although the author has blogged that it is on the way.At the price it is being sold for I definitely feel the book is worth checking out. Especially for those developers that have not had a chance to familiarize themselves with the tools the .NET Framework offers for building Line of Business applications.

Today I'm finally doing what I should have done long ago: throwing this book away.Perhaps like many others, I originally bought the book hoping for a thorough treatment of the MVVM pattern. Back then, the letters MVVM read even larger on the front cover. What I then found was a outline of many architectural and infrastructure patterns, but MVVM is only treated marginally. So at first I felt simply cheated for my money.Then I decided to give the book a chance, and let it show me how a modern WPF line-of-business application ought to be architected and structured. Once again I was disappointed, for it appears that the author is trying to teach ideas and concepts that are beyond his full grasp. Or perhaps it's just the inaccurate language. (Example: "The OR/M concept is an easy-to-understand but difficult-to-accomplish mechanism for persistence." So a concept is a mechanism. Mmhmm. The book is full of vague sentences like that one, giving the impression that the author doesn't fully understand what he's writing about.)Finally, there's a typo in just about every code example in this book, and many of them are badly formatted. They also contain XML document comments, which might be good for IntelliSense, but use far too much ink in a printed book & obstruct reading with unnecessary, visual clutter. I expect a publisher to think about stuff like that. And I'm not even judging the value of the code examples... they are probably next to useless.Sorry Mr Garofalo, but I just cannot take your book and the advice therein seriously. Even if the book might contain some grain of good material, that simply isn't enough, and it's presented very badly. Fail.

Let me transcribe some lines written by the author in the chapter 6:"...the purpose of this book is to give you the guidelines for implementing a LOB application using the MVVM pattern - explaining how these mechanisms work on WPF or Silverlight is beyond the scope of this book" (page 149).continues:"... but if you don't know these concepts in depth, especially DataTemplate and DataBinding, I suggest that you buy a book specifically about the technology you are planning to use (WPF or Silverlight)..." (page 150).I bought this book with the hope to learn about WPF and MVVM, but after read it, I learned only the basic concepts.The author writes about many concepts but none explained in deep (for example, he mentions Expression Blend, MEF, Enterprise Library, POCO, NHibernate, Entity Framework, TDD, DDD, etc.)The book is like an overview from 10000 feet of what the title says.The code doesn't compile at the first time, you need to download extra components (like AvalonDock in Codeplex and Entity Framework Feature CTPY)

This is a wonderful book for an Alto Sax player. Has a GREAT variety of songs some are challenging and others are a bit easier. My son LOVES this and it has popular well known songs which encourages my son to play and practice more. He loves the song "Happy" and is really trying to get the song done but he is a relatively new player so it will take him some time. I am so proud him and I am so glad that books such as this are available. The price was right and there really are exactly 101 Movie Hits (all familiar ones at that)!

My teen is enjoying this book! In band she's often playing supporting notes and not the main melody, so she is loving this!

Daughter is in 7th grade & it was a struggle to get her to enjoy much less even practice her saxophone. Now she loves playing! And we love listening!

From the first it’s obvious that Peter Ford has given us an intimate portrait of the man and glossed over very little. Some of the revelations make painful reading.Peter Ford traces Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford’s beginnings in Canada and how he came to live in the U.S. and became Glenn Ford. We learn that his acting credentials were well grounded in years of performing in community and amateur productions. Peter Ford pins down the appeal that kept Glenn Ford a major star for decades.I was surprised at the issues dealt with. No son likes to hear that his father cheated on his mother, but Glenn did many times and was candid about his affairs with some of Hollywood’s most beautiful women.But there is a sad family saga here and we view it from the inside. Peter Ford’s mother was the brilliant dancer Eleanor Powell. Peter relates how his parents’ marriage was eroded by long absences and Glenn’s infidelity. It also damaged the relationship between father and son.The younger Ford also acknowledges that Glenn Ford’s movies, with exceptions such as “Gilda” and “Blackboard Jungle”, were entertaining, but not that notable. It was frustrating for his father who loved acting that there were few opportunities for truly iconic roles. He was to star with Rita Hayworth in “From Here to Eternity”, but for various reasons it didn’t happen – a fascinating thought nonetheless.Glenn was a man given to moods and not a little self-delusion. He did not avoid confrontation. There was a tough side to Glenn Ford, gutsy really. We learn how after the attack on Pearl Harbour he joined the marines just as his film career was taking off with no guarantee that it would be waiting for him if he came back. Amazingly, his association with the military eventually put him in harm’s way during the Vietnam War.Peter reveals the negative impact his father’s third marriage had on them all. Often the saddest part of a star’s story is their decline and passing. Toward the end, Glenn became dependent on others – not always with his best interests at heart.Peter Ford’s biography of his father is self-revelatory by its very nature. Life as a child of a Hollywood star is part of the story. Beautifully researched and written, no other biographer could have had the intimate access to his subject that Peter Ford enjoyed. As far as star biographies go, this one stands alone.

Glenn Ford may not have won awards for his impressive body of work on film, and we all know that recognition was unfairly given to performances of lesser substance during Glenn Ford's lifetime, but no matter. Glenn Ford was an Actor's Actor. He was a natural. Never a false movement or an insincere performance in his curriculum. Peter Ford illuminates both the man and the artist for us, and he does it most beautifully.

Objective, incisive, illuminating from so many aspects of his fathers life, and breadth of character as a man, a movie star who was so much more than the public ever realized. He was voted The most Popular Movie Star in The World; even over the like's of some Golden-Era-Great's. Enjoyable and hard to put down. A sad commentary so clearly and honestly written of the flaws and shortcomings of those in the movie industry who so often caught up in the pseudo-world of make believe that they can't, or don't want to see reality. I really enjoyed this book on Glenn Fords' life. While he was an actor before my time, I got to enjoy this Canadian born actors 50 year film career from streaming and seeing them on American Movie Classics. Like many actors of his time, Ford served in WWII but had a hard time returning to the screen until he took a lead in the movie Gilda with Rita Hayworth. His performance in this film noir classic brought him to the forefront of hollywood actors once again.He later served on a special forces team in the Vietnam War. In later years some of his best work was done in westerns where he became the fastest draw of all the western actors. Checkout: (The Last Challenge 1967) Fords characters are always hard working men with enough foibles to make them all believable. He was as versatile in comedy as well as serious roles and always insisted that he wasn't an actor, "I always play myself". To date I have watched 25 of Fords 109 movies.

He is also the author of Iceland for which he won the 2008 Lowell Thomas Award.  Massimiliano Di Pasquale first travelled to the Ukraine in 2004 and has been back to explore the country many times since. Photographer, writer and journalist, Massimiliano writes regularly about Ukrainian culture and politics for many Italian magazines and newspapers. In 2007 he interviewed President Viktor Yushchenko for Italian geopolitical magazine east. In 2010 he published the photographic book In Ucraina. Immagini per un diario (In the Ukraine. The only travel book on the Ukraine is the Bradt. They aren't my favorites but I replaced a 3rd edition with it. Some glaring errors like a town described as 70 km W of Liev is actually 70 km East. Oh well.

Visited the Ukraine in November 2014 and bought this book a week before I lefton my trip. It was very useful and I hope to use it again when I return. There is not much outthere on Ukraine tourism but there should be.This author writes in a very comprehensive and interesting way. You don't feel your readinga guidebook from 20 different contributing authors. The book feels like it was written by someonewho knows the country and has enjoyed visiting. The book also feels like the author wants you toenjoy it as much as he does.

I recently returned from a trip to Chernobyl, Kiev and Lviv. I loved this book. Really helpful historical material.

This is relatively thorough guide, but it could use a few more visuals and photos. Some of the sections are a bit out of date and could use some updating to include newer hotels, restaurants, etc., but overall, the guide is thoughtfully done and includes important information about the history of Ukraine.

I found this book on Ukraine very interesting. For a more contemporary fictionalized view I also enjoyed the new spy novel "Death of a Spymaster" that is set in Kiev at the beginning of the current conflict with Russia.

Singer's Corporate Warriors is an excellent book about the world of private military firms (also called private military security contractors).When he wrote this, the United States was not yet involved in Iraq, let alone against ISIS. It was updated in 2008 as Barack Obama was running for president so it has been somewhat updated though not completely. It could definitely use another given the events of the past eight years.Nonetheless, it is an invaluable introduction to the subject (there are several newer books available now), a subject about which I knew very little going in. It presents a disturbing picture of the world in which private military firms are largely unregulated by both national and international law, presenting all sorts of potential difficulties. We have already seen some of these in the Abu Ghraib scandal and in the behavior of Blackwater during the Iraq War and subsequent occupation and civil war.Singer goes into great detail regarding the history and development of these contractors and the various uses for which they have been hired by our own and foreign governments. There is an example order of battle and a sample contract, both of which are very illuminating. It is heavily footnoted and you can tell Mr. Singer, who is known also for his books about robots and warfare and cybersecurity, did his homework.Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject or in national security and foreign policy.

Mr Singer provides an excellent study of a millenia-old dynamic: the use of mercenaries in warfare. Of course, today's mercs are referred to in much different, politically-correct terms - but that doesn't change the basic principle on which these warrior-for-hire are founded. It is important, though, to understand the changes in the days even since Executive Outcomes, and the evolution that has taken place since then. This work, along with several other written in recent years, do a functional service to the global public by helping to educate those unfamiliar with this often misunderstood profession, its corporte backers, and the entities that hire them today. In my opinion, there is definitely a role for private military companies (call them what you will) in this modern world, and there is little question that - just as they were used 2,000 years ago - the mercenary will always have a role to play in international conflicts. Having attended some training at Blackwater and met Eric Prince (following 9/11, prior to Blackwater becoming a rent-a-cop's dream vacation), and having worked in the national security field, this subject is of intense interest to me, personally. This work furthered my knowledge on the subject and I think should be read by everyone who has an interest in national and international security.

In Corporate Warriors, Singer provides historical background for the hiring of private military personnel and then describes their contemporary use globally. He notes that the employment of mercenary soldiers began thousands of years ago. But as modern states developed, governments moved to place all military forces under their control. Reliance on hired soldiers declined significantly by the beginning of the twentieth century. During the Cold War, U.S. and Soviet forces provided military assistance to the armies of developing nations reducing the inclination of those countries to hire mercenaries. Singer explains that changing economic and political conditions fostered the rise of modern private military companies. He notes that the market place has ended the state’s monopoly over violence and that private military companies are now active all over the world. The hiring of private military companies appears to have increased for a number of reasons. The reduction of the U.S. armed forces after the end of the Cold War led to a renewed market for private military contractors. It may be cheaper for small or weak states to hire private military companies when they perceive the need for force rather than maintaining sizeable standing armies. Certain corporations and humanitarian groups may hire private military companies for protection in dangerous areas where local police are too few, too corrupt or too incompetent. Demobilization of armed forces after the end of the Cold War increased the availability of weapons and trained military personnel in search of new jobs. Singer also describes how the 2003 Iraq War provided new opportunities for private military companies. This book is a fascinating and enlightening examination of an internationally important topic..

There is a much deeper story to be had in the operations that a supported as private companies that are true government operations that hide in plain view. Companies started, ran, and operated by the US government but stand opening as supposed private companies. I am not, in any way, saying that is bad. It provides total control over a situation by controlling all facets of the operation. The story is much more interesting but if truly told would hobble their efforts. A story that would stand so firmly as fiction that the truth could be boldly told and believed by no one. The public would find it absurd that such an operation could go unnoticed standing so openly for all to see. A job well done here in the book and to those that operate secretly in plain view.
