I read on both sides of that fence but infinitely prefer the popular criticism side, which has the power to draw anyone who enjoys attentive reading into its circle. And John Mullanâ€™s book is among the best I have read in that arena.He approaches the business episodically, through a series of inquiries that range from trivial matters such as â€œDo Sisters Sleep Together?â€ to subtler points of style such as â€œWhen Does Jane Austen Speak Directly to the Reader?â€ Each of his leading questions opens a little window on her work, examining issues of her cultural context or her literary technique. The essays embrace all the published novels, with (sadly) only glancing mentions of the juvenilia and unfinished works. (I wish people paid more attention to *The Watsons*!)Along the way, he illuminates aspects of her world of manners such as the fine points of namingâ€”why itâ€™s rude for Mrs. Elton to call Mr. Knightley â€œKnightley,â€ to be sure, but also what Elizabeth Bennet is telling us about herself when she stops saying â€œMr. Darcyâ€ and starts referring to him as â€œDarcy.â€ (Speaking of the mega-couple, Mullan showed me a lot about their mutual attraction that I had overlooked during a gazillion rereadings of *Pride and Prejudice.*) What other critic would have considered an examination of how Jane Austen uses weather? He has a gift for discovering a telling keyword or concept and following its thread throughout a novel, showing us how it reveals Austenâ€™s thought processes.Many of us have had the experience of seeing something new each time we reread a Jane Austen novel. After decades of that experience, I thought I was reaching a point of diminishing returnsâ€”till John Mullan showed me how much I was unable to see without his help.

John Mullan's book is packed with insights about Austen's writing. His approach to Austen involve looking at twenty crucial "puzzles' that he then 'solves.' All of which attempt to catch Austen in the 'act of greatness' (Virginia Woolf's phrase). Mullan asserts that there is so much more going on in any passage of Austen than most people realize. To catch Austen's full meaning, readers must look closely at everything she says. Mullan writes in his introduction, 'Little things matter, not because Austen's interests were trivial, but because the smallest of details--a word, a blush, a little conversational stumble--reveal people's schemes and desires." A small example of what he means can be seen in this passage from his book: 'What time do John Thorpe and James Morland set off from Tetbury to Bath in "Northanger Abbey?" Ten o'clock: we need to be clear because John Thorpe is an absurd braggart obsessed with the unlikely speed of his horse, and his bending of every fact to his purpose ("It was eleven, upon my soul! I counted every stroke") is the essence of his character.' A new friend urged me to read this book, and now I am urging you to read it. If you want to get the most out of reading anything by Jane Austen, you must read John Mullan's "What Matters in Jane Austen."

I liked the book, with a couple of fairly minor reservations.First, you really do have to know your Austen, but I assume anyone considering this book falls into that category. The author talks about all of Austen's novels, plus an unfinished one that I've never read. You might not follow all of what he discusses if, for example, you aren't clear on all the plots and characters (I don't remember who anyone was in Northanger Abbey, for instance, as I've only read it once a long time ago).Second, yes, he gets a bit detailed on things like who blushes. But the whole point is that these things meant something in Austen's day, and that we're unlikely to pick up on lots of these little details now. I especially appreciated the chapter on money, as I've always wondered about the relative importance of many of the characters' comments on finances.Third, the book ends very abruptly. That may seem like a picky detail, but I was reading along on my e-reader and it just suddenly ended. No conclusion, no wrapping up, nothing. It was a somewhat disappointing way to finish it up.If I could give a rating between four and five starts, I would. It wasn't quite 5-star-worthy, but I did find it very interesting and informative.

Jane Austen is a master story teller. Her careful expression is often witty and subtle and avoids unnecessary details. John Mullen's comments provide useful insights for modern readers. Although Jane Austen usually avoided symbolism and hidden meaning, her sophisticated style is not always apparent. Mullen points out that blunders and blushes as well as giving selected characters no spoken lines provide important shades of meaning. Jane Austen avoids unnecessary details; but for modern readers, Mullen's information about life in the early 1800s such as etiquette for mourning (not grieving) for the death of a family member and the cost of living make the stories more understandable. "What Matters in Jane Austen" is clearly written and well organized. All of the 20 chapters treat useful subjects that enhance understanding and enjoyment of Jane Austen's novels.

Kecia Ali provides an amazingly clear and lucid writing on this very difficult and complex topic.She has a knack for being able to connect the past with the present as it relates to medieval muslim thinking about gender, sex, marriage, divorce, slavery, intimacy and a whole basket of related topics with the ethics related to them.Ms. Ali's other detailed and wonderfully intricate book titled Marriage and Slavery in Early Islam coupled with this book is a perfect introduction to Muslims and non-Muslims alike who want to understand the "structure" and "objectives" of these institutions as they took form and evolved in the minds of the pre-modern/medieval Muslim scholars.Her discussion on this topic is timely and the relevance to today's Muslim scholars, thinkers and policy makers is absolute and is elaborated in a very clear and comprehensive fashion.

This book is amazing! It's hard to say too much about it. The authors clarity and style are so great, she trusts the reader and brings out the moral/legal ambiguities and she lays things out so the reader can draw their own conclusion. Reading this book is like looking at life through a new lens, so much food for thought I marked it up and forced all of my friends tor read it. Those that don't are subjected to a summary of the main arguments anyways. I can't say enough about it!

This is an important contribution to an unknown field in the English speaking world. The photos are lovely, and this served me well for most of the year, but if you're, say, using this calendar as a reference when trying to plan a weekend getaway for Columbus Day, you might want to plan it for the weekend before the date noted on the calendar. Or use a different calendar altogether. Canadian Thanksgiving and Columbus Day are not on October 15, but you wouldn't know that if you were using this Ansel Adams calendar. The whole point of having one is to know what's happening when. I nearly planned a trip for the wrong weekend because of this stupid thing. If I wanted pretty pictures, I would frame one. Never again, Little, Brown and Co! Next time, don't skimp on the copyediting.

The reason that I buy this calendar, year after year, is that the extra-large date boxes provide ample space for recording family medical appointments, upcoming meetings and activities, and other date-related reminders. The Ansel Adams black and white photographs are beautiful, and every year's selection is different.Each month's calendar page includes a mini-calendar for last month and next month, and indicates holidays, moon phases, and important items like daylight savings time changes. There is also an extra page for January of the upcoming year. This calendar is the same as the one sold in retail bookstores at year's end, but I like to buy it from Amazon as soon as it is offered (my 2013 calendar shipped in August), so that I can write in next year's appointments (beyond January) as soon as they are scheduled.

If you like Ansel Adams and regularly buy the annual calendar, you'll know all about the great pictures and the good amount of space for writing appointments against each day. This is usually an easy 5-star award. But this year - first time ever in over ten years of buying - the punched hole is so far in from the edge that it encroaches on the pictures themselves. Problem? Yes, if you plan hanging it on a picture hook and maybe framing and hanging any of the super prints after the year is over.

I have bought this and the Mini-Calendar for many years. This is the 2nd time the misdating of a holiday has caused me problems! October 15, 2018 is NOT Columbus Day! I booked travel far ahead assuming this, and we were all surprised each family member was expected at work instead.I communicated my displeasure last year with a religious holiday error in the Mini. I think I will have to find another "brand," but I will; miss the Ansel Adams photography each morning in my office. :(

Love these calendars; I buy one every year and never get tired of Ansel Adam's photographs. The calendar is well made, and the boxes are large enough to write everything on them that we have going on. I like that it includes the following year's January too so we don't lose track of upcoming things before the next one comes in. Loyal customer - the only calendar I buy.

I love my Ansel Adams calendar each year. It's exactly the size I need for the inside of my kitchen cabinet, it's made of beautiful, high quality paper, and it has spiral. I like the large squares for writing in my daily appointments, activities, commitments, birthdays. I like the black and white pictures because they are quietly beautiful...I don't want something colorful on that particular calendar. Too much color would distract...besides I use colored markers for my entries...that's enough color. Each year the selections are gorgeous. I order one of these each year for all those reasons. Can't beat those gorgeous black/white photos of Nature.

As an amateur photographer, I can think of no greater inspiration than seeing the Master's images on my wall every day.This is the only company, Little and Brown, authorized to use Ansel Adam's images to make a calendar. The quality of the prints, the paper, everything is superb.I'm planning to frame the images from last year.

I have bought this calendar every year for over ten years now. My husband loves black and white photography and Ansel Adams is one of his all time favorites. I have never once over all of these years been disappointed with this purchase. We are very technologically inclined people, e.g. all our appointments go on a shared calendar on our electronic devices. We don't use this to keep track of appointments it's really more of a monthly changing piece of art. However, the squares for each day are plenty big so if you are more of the traditional writing type and not so technologically inclined you will for sure love this calendar. I am happy to say I will continue to purchase this annually for my husband.

About the Author

John began his advanced education in the seminary but then redirected his goal of serving people through a career in education. He began as an English teacher and moved into administrative positions: principal, superintendent of schools, and first lay president of his high school alma mater. John received several awards over the course of his career: the 2000 Massachusetts Principal of the Year, the 2009 Massachusetts School Counselor Association Administrator of the Year, and was named to the Jostens renaissance Hall of Fame. Margaret holds a bachelor's of science and master's degree in food and nutrition. As a registered dietitian, she was a trailblazer in the field of supermarket retail dietetics, and was the first female vice president of Shaw's Supermarkets. She retired as Shaw's Vice President of Corporate Communications in 2004. Margaret enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering for My Brother's Keeper, a Christian ministry that provides hope and love to families in need. Much of her creative free time is spent quilting and embroidering household items and decorative art for her family and friends. I've read a lot of books in my life. Psychology, Poetry, Biology, Business Theory, Self-Help, Nutrition, Economics and so many other subjects are represented in my home library.The Righteous Mind is hands-down the most important book I've ever consumed. Haidt's understanding of human morality and the science of communication and decision making are weaved together into an approachable, beautiful and potentially life changing symphony.Enough has been said about why you should read this book so I want to use the rest of this review to tell you exactly what I experienced after finishing this book and how it became "The most important thing I've ever read".I have struggled for years to communicate with some of my friends and family. So many words were wasted discussing politics, religion and conspiracy theories and all we ever accomplished was self-fulfillment. We never had resolution and we never succeeded in convincing the other side.I'm a person who considers myself well-read and a champion for pragmatism and logic. You can probably imagine how frustrated I felt when I was consistently unable to win arguments about out-there, government's coming for us-so buy some guns, conspiracy discussions.Something had to give, so I went searching and ended up on this book. I read it, digested it and decided to try and apply the principles to my communications. I was determined to "align with their elephant" first so I could then shift their mindset to my point of view.Let's be honest: I was just trying to manipulate other people into seeing things my way.Well, something incredible and completely unintentional happened: I realized I was wrong, a lot.One of the foundational pieces discussed in the book is the fact that we, as humans, make decisions in the parts of our brain that aren't subject to critical thinking. If you want to sway someones opinion, Haidt suggests, you must first appeal to their elephant (the emotional part of their brain or "why they feel the way they do").In the effort to start practicing this: I dedicated myself to asking "why do they believe this way?" first and only made suggestions after I felt that I could articulate what the other person was "feeling" about the subject.A crazy thing happened: many times I would find myself changing my mind about a subject mid conversation. As it turns out, other people aren't quite as crazy as I thought, they just have different experiences than I do.After I spent some time training my brain, I started to conversate this way without any conscious effort. I actually seem to have re-wired my brain. The implication of this can't be overstated.I now see the world in completely different ways and I feel that I can actually empathize for the first time in my life.I only wish everyone could read this book, understand their natural decision making process and be aware of what's happening to them when they have disagreements or strong opinions on a subject.You need to read this book. Everyone does.To the author: Thank you, Jonathan, for giving your life to understanding us a little better and for taking the time to write it all down and pass these lessons onto the rest of us.

Excellent read. Made me think about a lot of cultural and social factors I would never have considered. I lean toward "liberal" idealogies, but this book made me realize the value of a more diverse perspective for the survival of the human race and how my anti-religious viewpoints had incorporated "sacred" elements of their own. Subsequently, a few of my liberal views which I would not allow to be challenged in my own mind, I am now open to considering broader implications. In summary, this book moved a few of my black and white viewpoints back into the gray and was unexpectedly life changing for me.

I purchased this book because I am interested in the idea that morals may be inborn -- part of human nature -- and that each culture shares certain basic values. I started reading the book enthusiastically, but by the end I was skimming pages and dismayed that the author had so seriously failed to provide any solutions to our political problems.Haidt starts by dividing the human mind into what he calls the elephant and the rider. The rider is the reasoning, rational mind, whereas the elephant is the irrational, impulsive and intuitive mind. He argues that human moral decisions are guided by the elephant, and that the rider just comes up with a rationalized, post-facto "reasonable" justification after the decisions have been made by the elephant. Of course, anyone who has been alive for more than a couple decades may have noticed this kind of "logic" in his fellow humans. It goes like this: "Here are my biases, now how do I make an argument to justify it."Later in the book, he goes into more detail and lists the specific intuitions that may bias people towards certain moral conclusions: care/harm, liberty/oppression, fairness/cheating, loyalty/betrayal, authority/subversion, sanctity/degradation.However, he doesn't call them biases (that's my own terminology). He describes them as something like the taste buds of morality, whereupon one may develop certain "tastes" over a lifetime that cause one to be liberal (progressive) or conservative. Just like we may have a preference for sweet food, we might also have partially inborn and partially acquired intuition for, to make an example, loyalty, which may lead one to make statements like "My country, right or wrong" in the face of unethical behavior by one's government.Haidt rejects rational thinking entirely. Indeed, he goes so far as to label those who engage in systematic rational thinking as "autistic" (pg 136). He labels modern, civilized countries as WEIRD (an insulting acronym he made up). He also has no interest in individual rights, such as America's Bill of Rights. Rather, he finds solace in the ignorance of impoverished villagers in northeast Brazil and primitive people of India who wipe their butts with their hands (really! see pg 122). He praises studies which show that ignorant people prefer collectivism and use their intuitions (prejudices/biases) when making moral decisions. Critical thinking? Rights? To Haidt, they're irrelevant. He's openly hostile to critical thinking. He disparages psychological studies of advanced ("WEIRD") countries as "statistical outliers" (pg 112).Essentially, his ethics can be summarized as "cultural relativism", except that Western cultures are always wrong and those on the upper half of the bell curve (advanced, civilized societies) are WEIRD. Since humans are incapable of reason (according to Haidt), we can only navigate ethical and political decisions by intuitions. Whose intuitions should we follow, you ask? Well, that's unclear, although he does provide some helpful graphs of the intuitions of different political views towards the end of the book. I guess whoever shouts the loudest gets to make the rules.I don't actually disagree with any of Haidt's psychological studies. I just come to entirely different conclusion. When Haidt finds ignorance and prejudice, he wants to build a code of ethics out of it. Where I find ignorance and prejudice, I want to educate people and help them to understand the points of views of others. How can this come about? Well, first one must accept that there is a real, physical reality out there, and that certain actions make sense in the real world and others don't. If you compare today's political discussion with that of previous generations, you can see how far we've fallen. For example, read "The Federalist Papers" and compare that to any modern day politician's anti-intellectualism, and you can realize how much America has lost since our founding in terms of critical thinking and honest debate.The Enlightenment-style system of individual rights has advanced society enormously. Unfortunately, there are still pseudo-intellectuals like Haidt who want to drag us back into the stone age, or worse, towards fascism, religious fundamentalism, or communism. I find this book disturbing and could go on and on about problems I have with it, however I think I've said enough to get my point across.

This book was stressful for me to read because I really wanted to keep not liking the people I don't agree with. Challenge you to consider that those who do not agree with are not necessarily the devil. I will continue to refer to this in the future in my work as a therapist and minister.

I first heard about this book when two of my friends, a staunch atheist and an evangelical pastor, were both raving about it. What ?! I had to read it for myself.Wow! Just finished, and I can't recommend it highly enough for any owner/operator of a human mind and/or conscience!It's hard to explain how an empirically-based, research-oriented book could be well-written and take you on a tour of intellectual, social, and philosophical history and thought without somehow getting lost in the tall grass.If you've caught yourself wondering how those "damn liberals/conservatives" could even think such things, take some time to find out why.Make absolutely sure to get to the last couple of chapters.
