I read this book after one of its authors, Charles Murray, was harassed by a mob at Middlebury College earlier this year. I wanted to understand what the fuss was about. What I found was an amazingly well researched, lucidly written and honest book that pulls no punches. It has changed my view of the world in a profound way. Truly outstanding.

This book has been on my list for a long time. I can only applaud Drs Herrnstein and Murray in their meticulous and frankly brave effort in reporting on a very difficult topic in American discourse. Despite the fact they go through huge pains to present the data as scientifically and bias free as possible, the backlash they've received is truly sad. One of the things that struck me while reading this is how good a job they do of presenting difficult scientific discussions and statistics in a way that is surprisingly easy to understand and read for a lay person. I thought I'd be slogging through 500 pages and found the book was reading much easier and quicker than I would've thought possible. Kudos to them for making this accessible to everyone.Everyone should read this book. It addresses so many important and sensitive topics that our country needs to address out in the open rather than hide away as taboo or "not worthy of discussion". Similarly, many people wonder why it's research that should be or needs to be done in the first place. As they lay out in the book very well, this could have great impact on all aspects of how we run government and education. This also provides ample evidence and studies to back findings and positions that are often difficult to discuss but should be set straight to the general public. The truth is always preferable to a comfortable fairy tale we tell ourselves to make ourselves feel better.

An amazing book with much careful research and certainly interesting results. Sad that some of the topics are taboo in our media as there is much helpful insight for improved policy decisions. Lots of insight into many cultural problems. I especially found research on what works in a family and what doesn't. Definitely not a fast read but I found it quite clear despite my limited knowledge about statistics.

The subtitle is "Intelligence and Class Structure in American Life." Although you would not glean as much from the vicious attacks that have been leveled against this book since its publishing, the major thesis is that intelligence is highly correlated with success in America. This applies not only to financial success but also educational success, marital success, and happiness in general. This is only a commonsense observation. People who can figure out how to deal with life's problems are happier. As I write this I am having a fight with Social Security to receive my pension and a fight with the bank to get a deposit credited to my account. Fighting this kind of bureaucratic battle takes intelligence. People without the ability to argue their case, write a letter, and call their Congressman lose out. This same kind of intelligence, needless to say, is valuable to employers and leads to success at work. One of the observations is that as American society has become more mobile, like kinds of people tend to group together. There are enclaves of high income, highly intelligent people in Boston, New York, San Francisco and Washington DC. Lesser enclaves exist in the three cities area of North Carolina, Austin Texas, Madison Wisconsin and other university towns. More than that, the upper strata congregate very predictably in certain neighborhoods, comfortably separated from the minorities and other hoi polloi in their neighborhoods. This results in what the authors call "cognitive stratification." Young, mobile and affluent people seek each other's company and marry each other. The society is naturally separating itself by intelligence. A topic that Murray in particular addresses elsewhere is that even though the cognitive elite have the wherewithal to raise families, they don't. Those that don't, do. The result is that the world is getting dumber, summed up quite well in Richard Lynn's Dysgenics: Genetic Deterioration in Modern Populations. The discussion of race which has made this book infamous does no more than reiterate what psychometricians have consistently discovered since intelligence first started to be measured a century ago. Black Americans, on average, score one standard deviation lower on IQ tests than whites: averages of 85 versus 100. What they also find, but which does not excite controversy, is that Ashkenazi Jews average 115, Americans of Northeast Asian descent average about 107, American Indians average about 90, and Hispanic Americans about the same.It is worth a paragraph to describe what intelligence is. Intelligence tests measure the ability to cope in a modern society. They are designed to be independent of culture. Some of them are even independent of language. They produce highly reproducible results – there are a wide range of intelligence tests available, and all of them will yield pretty much the same results for a given individual. In practical terms, a one standard deviation difference in population averages means that only one person in six in the lower population has an intelligence at or exceeding the average of the higher group. Only one white person in six is as smart as the average Ashkenazi Jew, and only one black and six is as intelligent as the average white. The bell curve explicitly predicts that there will be extraordinarily smart, and extraordinarily dumb people in every population. This is only common sense – we see exceptional Blacks such as Paul Robison, Clarence Thomas and Thomas Sowell who far exceed almost all of their white peers. On the other hand, you run across some dumb Jews. But not very many.Intelligence is highly correlated with success in school, income, health and happiness. This deserves a side note on statistics. A high correlation in the social sciences is not extraordinarily high. In round numbers, intelligence explains about 25% of the difference in levels of success. Other factors, such as personality, good looks, a stable family, being born rich, and so on certainly play a part. Statistically, however, none of these are as important as intelligence. As I write this review in 2016 the question of intelligence is even more pertinent. Technology is eliminating routine jobs at an alarming pace. Typists and grocery check out clerks are becoming a thing of the past. The target now seems to be drivers, paralegals and others who do fairly routine work. It is simply easier and more accurate to have machines – often computers – do the work than to pay people. At the same time, as noted in Lynn's book above, the intelligence of nativeborn Americans is declining. The problem is compounded by the fact that America is bringing in large numbers of immigrants from the populations with lower intelligence.Murray and Herrnstein did not offer a very optimistic conclusion or a realistic way out of this problem. There does not appear to be one. It has only gotten worse since their publication. In hindsight, the United States appears to be worse off for not having paid attention to this book when it came out, just as it did not pay attention to the Moynahan and Coleman reports in the 1960s. As things collapse as I write this, during the Clinton – Trump election campaign, it appears that the chickens are coming home to roost.

Re-rated 5 on second reading. This is THE MOST IMPORTANT SOCIAL-SCIENCE BOOK OF THE 20TH CENTURY, BAR NONE. (That's the first time I've written an all-caps sentence in a review.)This book is brilliance above brilliance. It is dry, academic writing (and only one section out of four deals with race and IQ, and only a small part of that section -- so much for all of the one-star reviews deriding it as if it were nothing else, and, even if it were, as if the truth must not be admitted, must not be spoken, if it fitteth the narrative not), but, in the best tradition of such dry academic writing, is packed with information on every page. The book is an eloquent defence of the truth of hereditarianism vis-a-vis intelligence, and conclusively demonstrates that America is stratifying -- has stratified -- and will be stratified in to a society of classes based not on descent-qua-descent, or aristocracy (as they should be), or the warrior ethic, but upon a largely-inherited intelligence, which is distributed extraordinarily unevenly across various 'population groups'.To the egalitarian theorist, this book is heresy -- it thesis heresy -- its authors apostates who must be burned, for they give the lie to the inane notion that all men are equal in all ways.One-quarter star deducted because the authors don't draw out the implications of their (proved) thesis, and, in a display of the cognitive dissonance engendered even amongst (especially amongst?) the learned by the dogmata of multiethnicism and the multicult and cult of diversity, show that they may not even be aware of such implications.

The Fearless Benjamin Lay: The Quaker Dwarf Who Became the First Revolutionary Abolitionist, by Marcus Rediker

Review

“Rediker provides a valuable addition to abolitionist historiography. . . . A concise, solid biography of ‘the first revolutionary abolitionist,’ a diminutive man who was decades ahead of his time.”—Kirkus Reviews“Rediker adroitly describes nuances of the Quaker faith’s evolution. . . . Lay’s farsightedness and extensive advocacy deserves to be remembered.”—Publishers Weekly“Highly recommended, especially for public and college library biography collections.”—Midwest Book Review“Lay, a lover of books, would have appreciated this one, less for the praise lavished on him than the attention given his message. As Mr. Rediker says, ‘Benjamin’s prophecy speaks to our time.’”—The Pittsburgh Post–Gazette“Admirers of Marcus Rediker’s splendid The Slave Ship will be delighted by this historian’s new book. Sailor, pioneer of guerilla theater, and a man who would stop at nothing to make his fellow human beings share his passionate outrage against slavery, Benjamin Lay has long needed a modern biographer worthy of him, and now he has one.”—Adam Hochschild“A modern biography of the radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay has long been overdue. With the sure hand of an eminent historian of the disfranchised, Marcus Rediker has brought to life the wide-ranging activism of this extraordinary Quaker, vegetarian dwarf in a richly crafted book. In fully recovering Lay’s revolutionary abolitionist vision, Rediker reveals its ongoing significance for our world.”—Manisha Sinha, author of The Slave’s Cause: A History of Abolition“The unswerving eighteenth-century abolitionist Benjamin Lay, maligned when not ignored for many generations, has at last found his sympathetic biographer. In this captivating, must-read book, Marcus Rediker shows that Lay’s disfigured body contained a mind of steel and a heart overflowing with compassion for victims of the Atlantic slave trade. Lay’s place in the annals of American reform is now secure. If you’re ready to have your mind changed about received wisdom on the eccentric, lonely early abolitionist who blazed the way for later antislavery stalwarts, read this brilliantly researched and passionately written book.”—Gary Nash, author of Warner Mifflin, Unflinching Quaker Abolitionist

This is history “from the bottom-up,” bringing Benjamin Lay’s unique and amazing story as a hunchbacked, dwarf abolitionist from Essex County in England out of obscurity. Rediker shows that not only was Lay in the vanguard of the abolitionist movement, but as a compassionate humanist, a man for our own times. In addition to being a strident abolitionist, Lay was a vegetarian, an animal rights advocate, and an opponent of the death penalty. After the death of his wife Sarah in 1735, he moved into a cave near Abington, Pennsylvania, where he produced most of his own food and made his own clothing. He was well-known in the Philadelphia area – Benjamin Franklin published his book in 1738, and he was notorious among those who were the object of his wrath (namely slave-owners) at Quaker meeting houses. Lay does not seem to have been overly concerned about being a “little person,” although it seems he had to endure some mockery because of it. Nevertheless, it certainly did not curtail his radical activism. The thesis of the book is straightforward: Benjamin Lay brought together numerous strands of radicalism in his effort to condemn as the devil’s own device the institution of slavery. Lay brought religious, philosophical, working-class, abolitionist, and commoner perspectives to the table. The fact that these are all present and expressed through a single individual demonstrates, Rediker notes, that they can all be part of the same consciousness. The evidence the author presents for this is abundant. Benjamin Lay was born into the radical Quaker tradition, a third generation Quaker born in 1682 in Copford, Essex. By the time Benjamin reached adulthood, Quaker practices had toned down considerably from their early “inner light” visionary practices. Lay gave this practice new life, especially after he married Sarah Smith, who was also a hunchbacked dwarf. The spark that lit Lay’s (and Sarah’s) abolitionist fervor was a sojourn to Barbados in 1718. Two years on that hellish sugar island in the Caribbean set the couple, especially Benjamin, on his lifelong abolitionist path. The atrocities they witnessed defy description. To help alleviate the suffering, the Lays started a meeting for the enslaved, eventually calling down the wrath of the planter elite. Their subsequent campaign against slavery embraced Quaker practices from the early days of the religion. The author elaborates on three of these practices: 1) Public rants against ministers; 2) The refusal of “Hat Honor” (i.e., not removing one’s hat during the Quaker meeting); and, 3) The use of provocative street theater (Rediker opens the book with a stunning example of this). The author also shows how Lay’s working-class background allowed him to connect with enslaved people who were routinely worked to death. Lay’s work-life began as a shepherd, where he found peace in nature and the herding of sheep, no doubt a nurturing influence. He then trained as a glover, difficult and monotonous work that would have helped him identify with enslaved people who were forced to perform endless rote tasks throughout their short lives. He maintained some proficiency in this trade all of his life; Rediker notes that glover’s tools and supplies were in significant number in his will.Eventually, Lay made his way to London. There, the monotony of gloving led him to take up the life of a sailor, which brought him into contact with the diverse “motley crew” of that profession. Experiences in the world of sailors, along with his later trip to Barbados led him to de-racialize humanity. In his writing, Lay referenced the Bible, specifically Acts 17:26, which proclaims that all people are “made of one Blood.” In his 1738 book, All Slave-Keepers That Keep the Innocents in Bondage, Apostates, Lay did not use the word “race,” instead he used the less divisive word “color.” This reflected his experience with the motley crew of the eighteenth-century sailing ship. After immigrating to Philadelphia in 1732, Lay continued his abolitionist activism. Religion and politics merged with philosophy in his life-long self-education. Learning Lay’s worldview is an education not only in Quaker antinomianism, but Greek asceticism, particularly that of the Cynic philosophers. Most influential of the former was William Dell, a radical Chaplain in the New Model Army during the English Civil War. In Philadelphia, Lay had dabbled in bookselling, and Dell’s works were one of Lay’s chief offerings. In his books, which Lay highly praised, Dell advocated antinomianism – the notion that no authority is higher than that of one’s own “inner light” or inner voice. Dell also encouraged civic education for the masses in order that they, rather than a socio-economic elite, would and could wield power. These points would have been profoundly upsetting to the elites of seventeenth-century England. The library in Benjamin Lay’s cave also contained works of Greek philosophers, particularly those of the founder of Cynic thought, Diogenes, and his protegés Pythagoras, Crates, and Lucian. Rediker provides a thumbnail sketch of this worldview by defining a handful of crucial practices. These included parrhesia, the practice of speaking one’s mind regardless of how it will impact those in power. Autarkeia meant self-sufficiency without the baubles of material gain; askesis and karteria meant training in self-discipline and endurance, both mental and physical; and finally tuphos, where one severely challenged the notions of luxury, prestige, and wealth, considering them flaws in human character to be overcome. All of this, from antinomianism to Cynic philosophy was built on a commitment to treat others with love, which was to be given to all.Predictably, Marcus Rediker delved deep into the Quaker archives in both England and the U.S. He also made himself familiar with the historical literature on Quakers from this period, much of which was old ground for him. The book is written for the general public, but is erudite enough to appease the specialist. I personally loved both the book and getting to know Benjamin Lay three hundred years after his righteous fight for justice shook the Quaker world and, as Rediker argues, kick-started a Quaker abolitionist movement that, in turn, was the foundation of nineteenth-century abolitionism. During his lifetime, the Quaker dwarf was a giant in his way. His antinomianism, Cynic philosophy, and raw courage will be inspiring to those pursuing egalitarian justice today.

Brilliantly written biography of a passionate soul who was willing to do just about anything to sway his fellow Friends that Slavery was the greatest sin. While his efforts were frowned upon and caused him no end of the approbation of his community, they were memorable enough to ultimately contribute to the future abolition of slavery generations after his death.

A fascinating character, the subject of a well-written entertaining history.

With his usual graceful prose, Rediker has uncovered the life of Benjamin Lay, the first Revolutionary Abolitionist. Using a myriad of sources including Lay's writings, (and even though Lay's papers were destroyed), the author explores the reasons for Lay's strong convictions about slavery and his guerilla theater tactics in bringing to light the horrors of slavery. Explaining his radical Quakerism, his courage against wealthy elites, and vegetarianism, Rediker has captured Benjamin Lay's relevance to present day and for the future.

Very thoroughly researched history of America's first anti-slavery activist, the eccentric Benjamin Lay.I found no fault in this entertaining and well documented history.

Sent to my brother which is what I wanted on the date promised. He loved it.

It worked only on my computer but it turned out great too.

I thought this book was well written and informative. Many books of this genre become nothing more than dissertations on the topic but this was entertain and so enlightening.

There is not much books available about Zoroastrianism in English so this book by the eminent Iranologist Mary Boyce is a great start and valuable resource. This book covers not just the history of Zoroastrianism but also some of it's theology and background information crucial to understanding this obscure major religion. It contains 14 chapters starting from the prehistory of the Ancient Iranians to present day Zoroastrianism and it's adherents. Like mentioned before it also contains other valuable insights to Zoroastrianism. Although the book is scholarly in tone it is very readable and enjoyable. As Mary Boyce says in the preface that "Zoroastrianism is the most difficult of living faiths to study". Luckily, this book makes it seem just a bit easier.

A clear, direct and to-the-point account of the history of Zoroastrianism. Well-written and meticulously researched. The best book I've read on this topic. For scholars, her companion book,"Textual Sources for the study of Zoroastrianism" is a very worthy addition. For amateurs, it's a bit heavy wading. Nevertheless "Textual Sources..." clearly shows the devotion and serious research that went into producing this book, "Zoroastrians".One thing she emphasizes is how heavily indebted Judaism, Christianity and Islam are to Zoroastrianism (and thus Mormonism, Sikhism and Baha'i are indebted as well). Well worth reading by anyone who really cares about religion and has an open mind as well.

Were I able to give half stars, this would actually be a 3 1/2 star book, but I will round up. The title is a bit of a misnomer - while the beliefs and practices of the Zoroastrians are discussed at length, the organization of the text is more along the lines of a general history of the faith - its origins, evolution and parallel history of Persia. In terms of discussing the beliefs and practices of the religion, the first third of the book is outstanding as Boyce explains the origins and tenets of the religion, and how these beliefs were practiced in the early bronze age through the 5th century BCE. The parallels of Zoroastrianism on Judiasm, Christianity and Islam are clearly deliniated here as well. The middle third of the book (on the Selucids and Sassanids) was of less interest - I found it especially dull. The final chapters, from the 7th century CE to the present were interesting, if only to show the breadth and depth of the challenges the faith faced under Islam and European colonization. In terms of religious study, I wish Boyce had given greater attention to the syncretism between Zoroastrianism and the monotheistic religions of the Near East rather than merely discuss the broader similarities and have readers make inferences about them. As a history of the Near East through the lens of a particular religion, this is an outstanding text.

The student of religions has few options when it comes to Zoroastrianism. Its scriptures have not been translated into English in over a century and there are vanishingly few scholars capable of dealing with the extreme philological and historical challenges of understanding and translating the material. Thank heavens that of the few books we have, Boyce's book is among them. Flawed though it may be, it is an invaluable overview of the history of Zoroastrianism from the time of its founder to the present day.Boyce did possess ample expertise to motivate and present the history and doctrines of Zoroastrianism in plentiful detail. Too plentiful, in fact, for the tastes of this reader, and I have a large appetite for dry academic material. Even so, plowing through this relentless presentation of technical terms, unfamiliar names, and obscure dynasties and languages was a daunting challenge, even at a short 200 pages. For all Boyce's lavish attention to detail she presents a surprisingly one-sided picture of Zoroastrianism. You would never know reading this book that the historicity of Zarathustra has been challenged repeatedly, or that opinions are sharply divided on whether or not Darius and his successors were Zoroastrians.Boyce has arrived at her conclusions and that is what you get. Her commitment to this interpretation goes too far at times and compromises her scholarly objectivity, as when she refers to the Zurvanites as betrayers of Zarathustra's doctrine and a "deep and grievous heresy". Such ideas simply do not have a place in academic scholarship. If we are to have too few books on Zoroastrianism in English, I am glad this one errs on the side of too much detail and minutiae. This book is the account of a scholar with very deep knowledge indeed, and I am glad for it, flaws and all.

Mary Boyce's Zoroastrians is an historical overview of the birth, development, and ultimate withering away of this ancient religious community. Laying the foundation of the religious culture of ancient Indo-Iranians out of which Zoroastrianism grew, she gives some basic but comprehensive details as to the Zoroastrian's religious beliefs (and some few facts about Zoroaster himself). A Monotheistic culture, with an angelic pantheon that in some respects seems polytheistic, Zoroastrians fight to maintain their belief in Ahura Mazda and the forces of good, which they believe is humankind's chief ally against the forces of evil, the Angra Mainyu. Although this book may be a bit in depth for introductory readers, to get beyond the basic facts of most world religion books, Boyce's book is a recommended read. Rich in historical detail, sometimes a bit thick and heavy, Boyce packs a lot into 230 pages.

The Ecstasy of Being: Mythology and Dance (The Collected Works of Joseph Campbell), by Joseph Campbell

Review

“Unusual insights . . . with a great deal of new information. [Campbell’s] writing reveals deep knowledge of dance and aesthetics, and clarity of thought. There are also excellent notes related to both Parts I and II at the end of the book, and these add to the reader’s understanding of the various issues and artists under discussion. Readers will find a great deal to think about in this small collection of Campbell’s work, and the book will also serve as an introduction to the thoughts of an important American writer — one who influenced many with his teaching, ideas, and books.” — Journal of Dance Education Praise for Joseph Campbell “No one in our century — not Freud, not Thomas Mann, not Lévi-Strauss — has so brought the mythical sense of the world and its eternal figures back into our everyday consciousness.” — James Hillman “Campbell has become the rarest of intellectuals in American life: a serious thinker who has been embraced by the popular culture.” — Newsweek
