A unique book, and not what I expected. Not like any other book on any subject that I have come across. Goes through problems and describes solutions one by one. A different but very powerful teaching style. Does a great job describing *exactly* why you want to follow the very best industry practices established for HTTP/XML. Also works as a good reference to look up selected subjects. If you are looking for a book on how to use Python or Java or similar to create a REST web server, this is *not* the book for you. If you are heavy into JSON, look elsewhere, this book is XML-centric. If you are trying to understand HTTP/XML from first principles, and build the very best REST platform you can, you have come to the right place.

I had been following "What is REST" tutorials online for the last few weeks as I was working on an API for an upcoming SaaS product. Unfortunately there were still some nitty-gritty details behind the tenants of RESTful design that weren't clicking in my brain, making it hard for me to really grok if I was following the intended design guidelines correctly or just faking it like so many other services do.Picking this book up after a recommendation from an HN reader, I got 4 chapters in before the smoke cleared in my brain and I had multiple "Ah ha!" moments such that the whole concept cleared up for me in a matter of days.It could be the writing style or presentation, but I just found it really easy to digest and answering all my questions as they popped up in my head.An excellent resource for anyone else working on RESTful API design.

The real-world guidance in this book is indispensable for anyone architecting for or developing services with REST. I sent a copy to each the architects on my team, and we plan to meet weekly to review sections. Several other books provide us with the principles and theories of REST; this book provides very practical guidance for putting the principles into practice.

I have not made it through the whole book, but my first impressions are really good. One of the interfaces we were designing for work is to time consuming to wait for a http response, in the first chapter of this book it gives you the way to do Asynchronous requests correctly with rest. There is also some good information on presenting resources that are not nouns, nouns are easy right you have a collection of people for example, you want to list all the people and do CRUD operations on a particular person. This to me is classical rest and is strait forward to do, but what about verbs (not in the POST, DELETE http sense) but in the give me driving directions sense. The book covers this and actually uses driving directions as it's example. There are a couple of issues I'm still trying to find covered in the book, like how to do pagination on a collection of resources correctly. There is at least one recipe on this, but I did not see how to indicate a default page size (ie I requested all user accounts, but only returned first 200 dues to size, how does the client know that 200 were returned)The other thing is the proper way to use http get parameters in search and other limiting operations. It would be nice to have some basic recipes there, but to be fair I might just not have seen them yet.All in all it's a nice addition to your technical library.

Assuming you know the basics but are looking to go from novice to capable this is a great book. I have left many page markers for quick reference in the future. An expert might learn a few things or be reminded of something they've been neglecting but may not be the proper book.

Great RESTful Web Services resource. Code examples are clear and concise. Good formatting to search for solutions to common problems.

This book provides Web API solutions for just about any problem you may be facing. It can be used as a reference book or selectively read to give you an extensive lesson in the capabilities of Web API. All of the solutions are easily accessed on GitHub. I would recommend this book to anyone just getting started as well as the seasoned web service developer.

I like the short, to the point examples. The book gets into lots of detail as we'll. worth a read for anyone building REST APIs

The best source for Hitler's life up to the outbreak of WW2. Clear, level-headed. Absorbing.Best source for Hitler's life: Kershaw's classic two-volume biography is the obvious comparison. Ullrich has 15 years of subsequent research to draw on. As well, Kershaw presents a Life and Times, while Ullrich focuses on the life. Ullrich can seem plodding in comparison with Kershaw's brilliance, and subsequent research doesn't overturn Kershaw's analysis, so you may still prefer him. If you've already read Kershaw and you want to go deeper, Ullrich is for you.Clear: Straightforward, fairly concise, readable. Excellent translation, livelier than the original.Level-headed: Ullrich disposes of much of the nonsense written about Hitler -- that he was a shirker in WW1, or gay, or lazy. He doesn't swallow Speer's self-serving lies.Absorbing: Ullrich's method is to give the facts with a minimum of analysis. It's dry, but the events are so powerful that the result is absorbing. I didn't find the book too long. Yes, it's 1,000 pages, but 232 of them are source notes, and there is a lot to cover.Book or Kindle? Buy the Kindle version. The book is workmanlike rather than attractive.

Book is absorbing. I couldn't put the book down; I'd argue this is one of the most informational, accurate, and scholarly books written about Hitler's life. I mainly bought this to help with my study of not only his life, but a research paper for college. It did not disappoint, however, the reason this book is so good is because it showcases democratic institutions, and how easy those institutions become corrupted when the people don't protect it. Understanding how thousands of people can blindly follow a man who views certain people as a disease and impure, eliminating thousands of innocent lives in the name of power, but most of all, false promises.Once you read this, you can see how and why he had so much support. Despite how vile he was, I can see now how he had such a large following with the cunning nature of his character, but also his tactful choice in words, leadership, and power.

First published in Germany in 2013, HITLER: ASCENT 1889-1939 is a dense, scholarly work that looks at the dictator of the Third Reich from many perspectives, offering perhaps the most “human” view available in our times.Volker Ullrich states that writing about Adolf Hitler is “without a doubt the most difficult task for a historian.” Hitler was, by the time of his suicide at the end of World War II, considered by all but a handful of his most fanatical followers to be a monster, and since then has been almost universally depicted as such. Thus a chapter entitled “Hitler as Human Being” reveals the author’s notable determination to present a responsible view of his complex protagonist. Ullrich chronicles Hitler’s early childhood, his adolescence as a rather dreamy school dropout and his service in World War I, up to the moment when he became the occupant of the German Chancellery, pivoting his country to the brink of all-out war.Contrary to other accounts that suggest Hitler was the product of abuse, Ullrich asserts that the boy experienced an unremarkable childhood for the time and place. The young Hitler showed early academic promise but wound up with slipping grades, contempt for teachers and an autodidact’s love of solitary reading. Eschewing the intimacy of most romantic relationships, but not a sexual deviant, he purposely developed an uncommon ability to stifle personal sentiment and morph into an iron-willed leader with near superhuman charisma. His pale violet eyes were variously described as intense, hypnotic, unforgettable and unwavering. Though he had only average talent as a painter, his hands were cited as those of an artist, and he used them memorably in his highly dramatic speeches.Admirably intent on presenting Hitler in an unbiased manner, Ullrich cannot help but paint a picture of an aberrant character devising and achieving an unprecedented rise to glorification. Hitler could cry at will, hide feelings of contempt behind a gracious persona, and had a prodigious memory --- but only for the facts he considered important. He could be both warm and cold, so extremely so that even his closest confidantes were perplexed when they thought back on it. And though anti-Semitism was rife in Germany after World War I, it was Hitler alone, in his distant and nuanced manner, who would cold-bloodedly predict, in 1939, “the annihilation of the Jewish race in Europe.”Ullrich’s thoughtful first volume of the Hitler biography immediately made the bestseller list in his native land. No stranger to exploration of the megalomaniacal personality, having written previously about Bismarck and Napoleon, Ullrich expresses his belief that by allowing Hitler some traces of normality, the deeds of the future Führer “will emerge as even more horrific.”Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott

Ullrich has done an amazing job taking existing materials combined with exhaustive research to create a detailed picture of one of the most notorious humans of mankind. After reading this masterpiece, I felt as though I was right there as Hitler created his persona which resonated with his base. The methods he used to rile his followers combined with his exceptional oratory skills look very familiar to me as I watch what is unfolding in 2018 in America. The parallels to our current president are chilling. Using bigotry and xenophobia to create an "us vs. them" mentality played a major role in demonizing the Jews and bringing Hitler's base together with a rallying cry. Also, using easy to remember slogans that were chanted at his rallies created almost a brotherhood. Hitler stated that he always spoke to the "dumbest" person in the room.Facts were not important to Hitler, it was the message.I bought this book because I wanted to understand how a sociopath could get elected and create a loyal, fervent following - I thought that we would never see this again. But it is happening here and now in our country. If you are curious to understand the mess we are in today, this is a good book to read. The similarities are haunting.

An excellent study on how democratic institutions and laws can be corrupted in a society where those institutions and laws are not defended by the people they protect, where there is economic distress, and where a large part of the population is willing to follow a self-proclaimed savior who promises to bring the country back to greatness by eliminating those parts of the society he views as foreign and impure. Well documented and a fascinating read.

The Protestant Face of Anglicanism, by Paul F. M. Zahl

This volume tells a story that is virtually unknown today: The Protestant background and history of Anglican Christianity. Through a fascinating exploration of the development of Anglicanism and its wider Protestant context, Paul Zahl attempts to show-contrary to the opinion of many present-day "Anglican writers"-that Anglicanism is not just a via media (between Rome and Geneva, for example) but has been stamped decisively by classic Protestant insights and concerns. He also discusses the implications of Anglicanism's Protestant history for our own age, suggesting that this dimension has an important contribution to make to the worldwide Christian community in the new millennium.

Concise historical review supporting the author's thesis that Anglicanism's Protestant "face" actually forms the very essence of the English reformation, and that this aspect has been neglected-even cast aside-through the years.

This book is a manifesto that intends "to restore the distinctly Protestant face of Anglicanism" (7), despite the fact that Anglicanism has always understood itself as a reformed Catholicism first, its relation to continental Protestanism being depending upon the former. Zahl's attempted restoration aims for much, for it aims at undercutting the self-understanding that Anglicans have always had (regardless of the various shades of understanding that "catholicity" has embodied in Anglicanism - as in the rest of the Church); in short, Zahl attempts a complete recreation of Anglican identity. The sources that he argues against throughout this work are predominately secondary sources (those that he dislikes the most are almost all found in a fairly thick volume titled The Study of Anglicanism) and his arguments are largely constructed by secondary sources against one another. Such a method reflects neither a mature nor thoughtful scholarship but, instead, a rather peurile approach to a fairly significant claim: that Anglicanism isn't what we think it is.One must wonder: why doesn't Zahl engage classic Anglican thinkers - as well as the medieval theologians and the Church Fathers? He seems neither to know classic Anglican thinkers such as Richard Hooker and Lancelot Andrewes nor to know that these persons built upon a legacy of 1,500 years, for any engagement with Anglican theology must be an engagement with the Church Fathers and the medieval doctors, especially St. Thomas Aquinas (who, although he does not hold the place for Anglicans that he holds for Roman Catholics, is nonetheless quite influential). Anyone can quote secondary sources, especially when they are all contained in a single volume! It takes a far greater and far deeper level of reading to get into the very foundation of any theological movement for the foundation is what grounds the worldview. It means getting into theologians as well as liturgies and hymns, art and poetry. He does none of this.Perhaps unsurprisingly, then, Zahl writes that Anglicans have never done any hard theological work. Yet, this is clearly not the case: Richard Hooker's Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity was the greatest consideration of the nature of the Church during the Reformation; the King James Bible and the Revised Standard Version are both products of Anglicanism; Archbishop William Laud was a tremendous patron of the sciences; the great Catholic "revivals" (which Zahl has a clear dislike for) in the 19th century were initiated by scholars at Oxford and Cambridge; the late 19th century Biblical and Patristic scholarship of Bishops Westcott, Lightfoot and Hort is still used today; Archbishop William Temple and Austin Ferrar were both invited to give the Gifford Lectures in their lifetimes (and the Gifford Lectures are among the most prestigious philosophical lectures in the world); Evelyn Underhill's great work Mysticism quite literally recreated the field of religious studies in the early 20th century; C. S. Lewis was one of the greatest apologists of the 20th century. To claim that Anglicanism lacks substantive theology or that Anglicans have never done any hard theological work fails to look at the facts.Bizarre theological assertions further injure his case. For example, he writes that creation "is not the starting point of Christianity" (73) - a point that is hard to square with the fact that the Bible not only begins with creation, but claims that creation is good. It is this latter point, in particular, that has historically held a very strong place in the Christian imagination. Against heretics on the one hand, who denigrated creation (especially the body) and against philosophers on the other hand who saw creation as an accidental emanation from God, the *ethos* that the first few chapters of Genesis gives is one that flies in the face of what Zahl wants to claim. This repudiation of the goodness of the created order continues when he writes that "The world on its own terms is no canvass for a portrait of God that is either unified of compassionate" (74). The Psalmic (and therefore Patristic, medieval and Anglican) notion that "the heavens are telling the glory of God" is consequently repudiated. Yet, Christians have historically believed that in addition to the Scriptures, one could turn to "the book of nature" and see something of God revealed there as well. Although the latter has always been subsumed to the former, it has never been absent. To undercut creation is to undercut the God that creates - and this is no small matter! In repudiating so much of Anglicanism then, "the Protestant face of Anglicanism" comes across as being entirely out of touch with Anglicanism's 2,000 year history. If this work is truly intended to "restore" something, one must wonder how this is going to take place as it seems both historically uninformed and theologically violent. This is book that restores nothing but attempts to destroy much, and will therefore cause considerable confusion. This is a book whose outlook will eventually destroy itself.

Zahl does an interesting historical analysis of the rise of Anglicanism, the Church of England, and analyzes the strong Protestant forces that have kept it together. I agree that many today are blinded by the Protestant reality of Anglicanism, and that it owes a great deal to that movement.Unfortunately, while Zahl does state he does not want to be "anti-Catholic", he ends up being just that. His greatest error is his broad-brush theological characterization of the difference between Protestant and Catholic, namely, that the latter is "incarnational" and the other is "atonement" based. While there is some general truth to that, one may ask if both have merit, for he clearly has problems with the incarnational perspective. By "incarnational", Zahl refers specifically to the Orthodox (not even Catholic!) view of theosis. If he wants to do that, then he needs to see how strongly catholic even Luther was and even reflected strong theosis sympathies, as shown by the Helsinki school of Lutheran study. In the end, Zahl is simply being polemical at this point.I agree, as an evangelical protestant Anglican, that Anglicanism is not a "third way", but rather a Protestant faith with an Episcopal, historic model. Nonetheless, there is ALSO a "Catholic" face to Angilcanism, whether he (or I!) like it or not. Moreover, he uses "Protestant" and "evangelical" very loosely and I was often unclear what his definitions were.In the end, the book captured my interest, but was thankfully short. I got this feeling it was written by someone who was annoyed by Anglo-catholic elements in his denomination and wanted to write against them. I also found the dearth of discussion around third world Anglicanism (a VERY protestant and evangelical movement!) to imply that England, and to a lesser extent, the US, was where one discussed "Anglicanism". This is a mistake.

This was a very disappointing book. Although I'm an English Use Catholic (a species of Anglican the author barely mentions and then not by name), I'm willing to concede that the English Reformation had a "Protestant face." But Dean Zahl fails to convince that this Protestant face has endured or has ever affected the catholicity of the Anglican faith in any essential way."The Protestant Face of Anglicanism" has many flaws. Polemical in tone, strident in style, unnuanced in its history, and often purple in its prose, its brevity doesn't allow the author to make a substantial case for much of anything. The book also suffers from a lack of precision in crucial definitions. For instance, early on in the book, Zahl posits a distinction between "protestants" and "evangelicals." But thereafter, he uses the two terms as synonyms. The lack of documentation was irritating. Many of Zahl's assertions about English history and the development of Anglican theology were uncited, so there's no way to check his sources or read further. Even fascinating tidbits -- like the complicity of Thomas More in the assassination of William Tyndale -- were uncorroborated. That's too bad. More's one sacred cow that could use a dose of real history.

I am a 65 year old Will Hobbs fan. I started reading his book, because I wanted to learn to be a children's author. I continue to read them, because I love them. I read a lot of non-fiction and these books for me are the perfect light reading. I love the spots he choses for his stories, I love his story lines. I love the amount of history and science in these books that I can always count on to be accurate. This particular book is one of my favorites. Good plot, very current topic. Loved it.

I ordered this book for my Library because it was on a reading list for a Competition held at our local public library and I needed more copies of it. The story is great and I think the kids are really going to like this adventure.Dylan and his cousin Rio head down the river on a multi-day trip. Little did they know what awaited them! Adventure, a criminal and his hostage, an approaching hurricane! Wow!! Hold onto your paddle!

Take Me to the River scores another triumph for popular middle school fiction author Will Hobbs. He sets the story in white water rafting territory near the Rio Grande of Texas, and imbues it with local color that kids who love the details of authenticity will soak right up! Two young teens make some choices that most parents would not approve of; this provides the drama of the plot. We have an absentee parent who is also a single parent, combining a situation in which many present-day kids find themselves with a situation in which they WISH they might find themselves! You like and root for these kids, root against the bad guy, and perhaps even pick up some sports information and historical lore. A solid choice, especially for boys. (Yes, its' true; some books ARE more male-oreinted!)

Great book. Read this one aloud and now my 13 year old is a Will Hobbs fan.

Great adventure book for boys ages 12-13. Both my son and I enjoyed reading this book.

I am from the area where this book takes place, and it was fun reading about all the places and people that I know. I have canoed all off what he wrote about and I can say he did excellent research. Plus it was a fun story. Definitely appropriate for a 10+ year old.

My 3rd grade daughter was assigned this book. The story was well written, but the content was not appropriate for her age level.

Will Hobbs never lets you down, love his books.

Review

“Impress the hell out of everyone without even having to set an alarm. Make ahead, chill, and wake up the house with the smell of delicious baking.”— Lucky Peach"Little Flower Baking is a 260-plus-page reminder that nobody does cakes, pies, cookies—you name it—quite like she does. If you need us, we’ll be licking turmeric-orange glaze off our beaters.”— Los Angeles Magazine“What a fabulous treat! I’ve always admired Christine’s knack for making recipes that are both comforting and inspired. This is the book to use for updated baking essentials, full of secrets that are simple, straightforward, and delicious.”— Sherry Yard, owner/chef of the Helms Bakery and author of Desserts by the Yard and The Secrets of Baking““Reading these pages is like sitting with Christine for a cup of coffee. I can hear her voice in every hearty potato bacon biscuit, in how she tells us to make an earnest sauce out of sea salt caramels, and in the practical ways she suggests to swap one ingredient for the other when the season calls for it. Few bakers can translate their pastries into words with the richness that Christine and Cecilia have in this cookbook. This is the kind of book that finds a home on the kitchen counter, collecting stains from sticky fingers or splattering pots of fruit, with many of its pages marked and handwritten notes on the sidelines.” — Roxana Jullapat, owner/baker, Friends + Family“It’s no surprise that Christine Moore’s Little Flower Baking is just like her, straightforward and enormously appealing—always figuring out a way to teach or be of service, and ultimately luscious without being precious in any way. I want to bake my way through these recipes from the first to the last.” — Evan Kleiman, host of Good Food on KCRW/NPR“When you eat Christine Moore's food, you feel happy and well served by life.”— Jonathan Gold, Pulitzer Prize–winning food writer, Los Angeles Times

Little Flower Baking has gorgeous photos that will have you itching to get into the kitchen and start baking. There is a pretty diverse range of recipes in here, from old standards like chocolate chip cookies to a phenomenal tomato ricotta cake to mini chicken pot pies. The recipe index also includes a list of gluten-free (24) & vegan (6) recipes, although that list encompasses a golden milk latte, hot chocolate, mexican hot chocolate, and brown butter ice cream, none of which are baked....I own "Little Flower" and I really loved all the savory recipes I made from it (green soup=amazing), but I wasn't blown away by the sweet recipes. They were pretty good, just not as good as other recipes for the same item. I was excited to see the new savory baking recipes in Little Flower Baking and curious about the sweet recipes. As I was flipping through, I noticed there's actually a high amount of overlap between the bakery & sweet recipes in "Little Flower" to the ones here. The way the ingredients have been written might be slightly changed (packed light brown sugar vs golden brown sugar) or in a few cases the scale has changed, but it is the same recipe in both cookbooks - this seems to be true for at least the oatcakes, buttermilk pretzel rolls, chocolate chip cookies, bouchons, brown butter shortbread, ginger scone, granola, foley cake, white cake, and the molasses cookies. The first cookbook was pretty small, so that is actually a fair percentage of the "baking" recipes from cookbook #1 duplicated here. That being said, Little Flower Baking has a ton of new recipes relative to the first cookbook, so while I wish I didn't have exact duplicates of recipes I liked but wasn't necessarily blown away by, there is a lot of new interesting content in this book. Some of the scone recipes included in Little Flower Baking are definitely going to be making a regular breakfast rotation in my kitchen, like the curry pineapple, honey lavender, as well as peach ricotta scones. I've made the chai sugar cookies and the white chocolate chai cookies for co-workers, and they were happily devoured by everyone. These recipes are pretty deliciously unique - I haven't seen them in other cookbooks - however the instructions are not perfect - the cup and gram measurements do not always match, particularly in the case of sugar and flour. In the case of the cookies, no indication is given as to the thickness they ought to be (beyond they should look "like hockey pucks"). Furthermore, the baking time given did not match my experience - my cookies and scones were perfectly cooked about 10 minutes before the recipe indicated they should be. The Alsatian Onion Tart recipe produced a fantastic tart, although it would be nice if Christine clued her reader in on how long it might take to "cook until onions are golden brown and taste sweet" - as not everyone may realize how long to allot for that process (at least an hour, if not more). I'm most excited about the Savory Muffins recipe, which is "inspired by ... Craftsman and Wolves" - their egg-in-a-muffin is outrageously good and costs an exorbitant amount, so I'm thrilled that Christine is enabling me to make my own version, even though it's not an exact replica. One additional note: It's a little strange that the featured blurb (as of writing this review) from Amazon for this cookbook is something about Christine's blood orange tarts, but that recipe isn't actually in this cookbook, it's one of the few baked items that doesn't overlap. That's not this cookbook's fault, but it's worth noting in case people are hoping for that recipe here!

The vegan ginger muffin Little Flower Candy Co. sells in Eagle Rock/Pasadena is one of *the best* egg- and dairy-free treats I have ever had the pleasure of eating. I cannot believe that I now have the official recipe thanks to this cookbook. Thank you so much for sharing with us all, Christine Moore! (BTW: I still plan to visit LFCC and buy them + other vegan treats!)

Chocolate Boucheron were delicious- I took them to a potluck where they were instantly consumed. Can't wait to try the next recipe.

My favorite recipe thus far is for tha lavender scones. I love the fact that she freezes most items so you can make them ahead and bake later.

Great cookbook!

Enjoyable reading and nice collection of recipes. The several I've tried have become favorites already

Great recipes that have been given a little more thought and attention.

This book is a bright star amongst the waves of baking books hitting the marketThe glorious photography makes you want to cook everything before devouring same. The book is user friendly packed with tips and clear instructions. This book is a keeper and the recipes will stand the test of time

What Should I Do With My Life: The True Story of People Who Answered the Ultimate Question, by Po Bronson

Amazon.com Review

In What Should I Do with My Life? Po Bronson manages to create a career book that is a page-turner. His 50 vivid profiles of people searching for "their soft spot--their true calling" will engage readers because Bronson is asking himself the same question. He explores his premise, that "nothing is braver than people facing up to their own identity," as an anthropologist and autobiographer. He tackles thorny, nuanced issues about self-determination. Among them: paradoxes of money and meaning, authorship and destiny, brain candy and novelty versus soul food. BronsonÂ’s stories, limited to professional people and complete with photos, are gems. They include a Los Angeles lawyer who became a priest, a Harvard MBA catfish farmer turned biotech executive, and a Silicon Valley real estate agent who opened a leather crafts factory in Costa Rica. Bronson is a gifted intuitive writer, the bestselling author of The Nudist on the Late Shift, whose thoughtful, vulnerable voice emerges as the bookÂ’s greatest strength and challenge. He describes his subjectÂ’s lives along with the ways they annoy, puzzle, and worry him. He frets about meddling with his questions, yet once, memorably and appropriately, he offers a talented man a top post in his publishing company. While this creates the juiciness of his portraits, it also can make Bronson the bookÂ’s most memorable character and the only one whose story is not resolved. Even so, this remarkable career chronicle sets the gold standard for the worth of the examined life. --Barbara Mackoff

From Publishers Weekly

In this elevated career guide, Bronson (Bombardiers; The Nudist on the Late Shift) poses the titular question to an eclectic mix of "real people in the real world," compiling their experiences and insights about callings, self-acceptance, moral guilt, greed and ambition, and emotional rejuvenation. Bronson crisscrosses the country seeking out remarkable examples of successful and not-so-successful people confronting tough issues, such as differentiating between a curiosity and a passion and deciding whether or not to make money first in order to fund one's dream. Bronson frames the edited responses with witty, down-to-earth commentaries, such as those of John, an engineer whose dream of building an electric car crumbled under his personal weaknesses; and Ashley, a do-gooder burdened by the unlikely combination of self-hatred and a love for humanity. Bronson wants to understand what makes these people-among them a timid college career counselor trapped in his job, a farmer bullish on risk-taking, a financial expert grabbing an opportunity to rebuild her brokerage firm devastated by the World Trade Center tragedy and a scientist who rethinks his lifelong work and becomes a lawyer-tick. He occasionally digresses, musing on his own life too much, and frequently hammers points home longer than necessary, but neither of these drawbacks undercuts the book's potency. The "ultimate question" is a topic always in season, worthy of Bronson's skillful probing and careful anecdote selection. Brimming with stories of sacrifice, courage, commitment and, sometimes, failure, the book will support anyone pondering a major life choice or risk without force-feeding them pat solutions. Just started reading this, and each of the stories is distinctive and impressive, for a big part by the way the author has written it, including honest observations about himself as well as the person when interviewed/visited. I limit my intake to about two per night, as each story has quite some umph, or impact to it, and one wants to let that resonate in oneself, if one is to use this reading as a tool to find in oneself what it is one could be looking for. The author has ordered the stories in a particular way, and explains that upfront, which I'm still trying to understand, as I'm working my way through the first part (of eight). But it's one of those books that's a hit, and you are looking forward to the next day/story. Find it very inspiring, and recognize things being said about a person, about a situation they're in or the attitude they have that prevents them. The author sometimes presses, if needed, but most of the time seems pretty laid back in terms of providing guidance/feedback to the person in question. But I like it when there is soul-searching depth to the conversation, as to the why and why-nots. One can't help the notion that often times the 'way' for the person is found by looking under their very own 'boots' (to borrow Walt Whitman's expression). It's pretty massive the book, which should give one a lot of inspiration, for a long time. Definitely recommend this one to anyone looking for something like a goal on the level of their earthly lives, but not quite knowing what it is yet.Update: just finished on a recent trans-Atlantic trip, which by the way it lends itself to perfectly, as the transitioning state one experiences during travel is the perfect condition for one's mind to turn reflective in regards to one's life, and the way things are going (that's what I like about that so much). The above initial assessment is still valid, albeit the overarching structure as explained by the author doesn't quite 'pan out' for me (but maybe in a 2nd reading). However, that's not the most important thing, for me; the wide range of views and takes / approaches to the subject by the personal stories of the interviewed people is. And that carries all the way to the last word, and leaves you with a gratefulness for the author's endeavor and persistence in this unique record, as well as his developed talent for candor in writing. In fact, I used the concept for writing in my diary by imagining I'm telling my story so far in as much a nutshell version as can be, inspired by 'to-the-point' expressions and descriptions to try to do the same (as even the nutshell version is pages and pages long:), in order to process and transform my own attitudes towards my life.

Let's start off with this: Don't go in expecting to get an immediate answer to the question posed by the title. Bronson used that as a lure to find people to interview. While he does answer it in an indirect way throughout the book (making me exercise my highlighting function on my Kindle), his approach is unorthodox. Don't go in expecting self-help; go in expecting collection of short biographies. In statistical terms, Bronson commits the dual sin of convenience sampling (e-mailing his friends and gathering people from his circles of journalism and finance) and self-reporting bias (some people approached him based on how badly they wanted to tell their story). He also demonstrates a willingness to involve himself with his subjects, which he grapples with as a moral hurdle a few times and which has a direct effect on some stories. It feels more like Bronson drags the story along at times: by asking the questions he does and expressing the opinions to his subjects, he acknowledges his own views on the topic rather than properly reflecting the views of others. That all being said, it made the book interesting to read. While the book could drag at times, there should be at least one story for everyone out there job hunting. If you can put aside the fact that many of these people never had to worry about money as much as they had to worry about what they would do in the course of a day, then you can find a lesson that Bronson attempts to extract from the circumstances. He's a capable and interesting writer, if not an objective reporter.

I came across Po's book a few weeks ago, and I loved it. I am asking these questions in my own life, wondering what to do with thelast 6- 8 years before retiring. Started a second career writing children's books, and love it. But it's more hobby, than cuit... well, career right now.To those who say he did not tell the whole story, for instance, in the surgeon who quit -- well that meeting happened , those doubts were expressed. Success once or twice in a literary field does not make a sure thing new career. If spending all the time, money , emotion and heartache to become a surgeon, then finding it wasn't going to be your future, you could not do it -- if that wasn't forthcoming or interesting enough for some ! I guess they have never been close to that experience, good on them. Here's what I got out of this book:A feeling t people , all sorts of people, successful, not successful , were asking this same question I was. That many were taking , or avoiding the high risks involved with a change of careerThat sometimes the risk is worth it, sometimes not-- you could find yourself in a worse spot... that's life! For me it was amazingly interesting to see how some people were asking and handing the question for themselvesReally, if you are not happy or satisfied, if there is more you want to do , experience... how can you not ASK THE TITLE QUESTION - even if you don't ask it aloud. For me, with family dependent on me, the economy shaky , the job market scarce, -- I will keep the day job , to fund the life and the dream (writing).Loved this book, loved Po's sit down with me for coffee and let's talk of these exciting , but difficult things... life career, choices, dreams, chances and decisions. I liked this book, and feel it's time now, 12 years later, to revisit the question of a fulfilled life, this time with us baby-boomers as examples. This book "What should I do with my life" is now available for a song here on Amazon. Under $7 including shipping -- best $$ ever spent. I found it far more honest, interesting and helpful than any pat chicken soup for books...and having mentioned it to friends, I bought two more copies to share out!For those upset there aren't more answers or a better "ending" -- I was grateful for more questions, and a bit of direction, as well as a community of people also involved with this adventure. Okay, his book won't be for everyone, but make you own decision -- If you are looking for your "thing" the work, job, career , creation... that will make you come alive, Po's book may help you in asking the right questions, and not feeling so alone in the search. His book contains the spirit of the quote by Nelson Mandela, I used for my subject line. Thanks Po, great book, call or tweet, me if you want to start the baby-boomer edition. I am many of my friends are still asking this question , and we didn't start yesterday!Robinsmithr8020@gmail.comsmithr8020@twitter.com
