Bauckham's book "is about how to read the Bible in a way that takes seriously its missionary direction." He presents Scripture as a "project" that moves from the particular to the universal; a project that invites readers to approach it as a story and to live within it.Bauckham identifies the missionary movement of the Bible in three dimensions: TIME ("from a particular past towards the universal future"), SPACE ("from one place to every place"), and SOCIAL ("from the one to the many"). In addition to these dimensions, Bauckham also introduces three missionary themes: BLESSING (God's choice of Abraham emphasizes the theme of blessing from a particular person to all people), REVELATION (God's choice of Israel emphasizes the theme of God's revelation to one nation, and thereby to all nations), SOVEREIGNTY (God's choice of David/Zion emphasizes the theme of God's universal sovereignty).Bauckham's notion of "representative geography" is a nice mechanism to explain why Israel conceived of itself as the very center of God's creation, all the while refusing to mythologize distant lands or peoples. Whereas ancient Israel waited for the nations to arrive in Jerusalem, the novel Christian development was its view of the community as the place of God's presence.Bauckham considers the charge that his reading of Scripture might be coercive, a "totalizing framework." In response he suggests that the Christian mission is not a mission of mastery or control. "The image the Bible itself often suggests for the way its truth is to be claimed is that of witness." A witness is neither judge (with final say) nor lawyer (responsible, primarily, for persuasive rhetoric) but one who reports (lived) experience. Ultimately, the cross of Christ is the essential key that prevents Christian witness from being asssimilated with the will to power. Overall, a high-spirited, energizing, and compassionate call to mission.

This was an okay book that utterly failed to grab my attention. If it hadn't been assigned for a class, I wouldn't have finished it.

Being in seminary I read lots of books. Lots. Even when I am not in class, getting ahead for the next class makes for constant reading. It's the life of a graduate student - philosophy, theology, politics, science, and history - everything in sight. Some of the books that I read are good. Really good. Others are useful for treating insomnia. Still others read like angry rants against chiliasts or some other error.Once in a while a book comes along that falls into the middle. It cannot be classified as good or bad. In this case, the content is outstanding, and I wish every pastor would read the book. Then again, maybe not. The language is academic and periodically quite dry. But if you can get past that, Richard Bauckham's Bible and Mission: Christian Witness in a Postmodern World is an outstanding, challenging work.A few quotes stood out to me as I read through it. Here is one: The New Testament gives the church in every age its missionary identity by plunging it into the midst of the biblical story where the words of the great commission still ring in its ears. (p. 25)But I was grabbed by the particular points. He confronts the failure of "postmodern" ideas and properly identifies it as a variant on Christian eschatology as well as a miserable failure. (p. 88) It maintains its place by power and domination. In addition, he sets up the principle that hanging onto this approach.Consistent with this he separates the church from the progressive ideals of liberalism. (p. 20) He sees no place for the dialectical approach within Christian missiology. That's a point which makes the work stand out - it expresses a proper Chrisitan militancy against the ways of the world.Unfortunately it also exposes the singular weakness of the book. When he discusses the church's involvement in human need, his analysis of the situation does not employ the Biblical standards of sin and abuse, but of comparative value. He uses a dialectical approach to describe the abuse. Bummer.But that's just one point. I find the book to be an excellent framework for finding your church's place when it seeks to confront this lost world with the redeeming gospel of Jesus Christ. It is not a strategy book. It is a book of principles that will be useful for anyone wishing to maintain focus on being Biblical.

A simple but effective running of the history, with comments on the individual recordings, of the songs that appear on James Browns first major album hit, "Live at the Apollo" recorded in October 1962 alongside the then occurring critical world event of the Cuban Missile Crisis, makes for an effective time capsule telling by Douglas Wolk of the making of this classic recording.While the author veers towards the over stated at times (did the 1,500 in the audience based on the limited public news released really behave as they did based on the belief they could die in a week!) he does a much better job of nailing the history of James Brown. These include how he got to make this recording against his record company's indifference; his on balance limited hit record success to date offset by his constant touring of an all action performance, but most of all that what was on show here was one man's personal and stylistic interpretations of a suite of songs that covered black music across the 20s to the early 60s. Some songs had undergone numerous adaptations and recordings by others plus JB before the versions done here (the ripping of of other peoples songs seems almost to have been a lifelong JB hallmark). What was really being performed was an exercise where songs could only last for less than a minute to over ten minutes as JB backed by his ever tight band riding on their leaders moods and his reading of the audience emotions laid down one of the truly original live recordings made.The fact that the LP was in popular demand for many months after to be played in full on R&B radio stations at a time when single hits were paramount was testament that something unique that connected with the black audiences of 1962/1963 had occurred and it was to be some time before JB reconnected in such a way again (and certainly never again with another live album, despite several attempts).Wolk also does a very good expose of Brown's ego and resulting mis-treatment of all around him plus how the recording was not a true full recording from having to be adapted and edited from the true JB live revue show, which while visually spectacular would not have translated into such an effective audio format.A story telling which is certainly "on the good foot" throughout.

A great short read about the live recording sessions that led to the creation of one of the seminal R&B albums. The writing is punchy, respectful, and never overwrought -- except for the glaring and jarring detours into the Cuban missile crisis. The episode is clearly relevant to the story, because the concert in question took place in roughly the same 24-hour time span that the crisis was unfolding, but while everyone in the Apollo that night may have had the crisis on their minds, the digressions into what the fighter planes and the decision makers were doing at exactly the same time that James Brown was wiping sweat off his brow as he switched gears and tore into another song are distracting and ultimately tell us little about why the crisis made the night charged. Wolk should have stuck to the performances and the music or else found a better way of weaving the crisis into the book.

Given a book-length space to fill, many magazine writers do what comes naturally: they write a book-length magazine article. Wolk, however, approaches his narrative from the top down, treating the long form with the reverence and intricate attention of a clockmaker god. His story moves chronologically in an evening's frame, but it's also shot through with a series of gears and patterns, nibble-sized pieces, and odd bits of synchronicity that align in unexpected choruses. Gliding across it all, of course, is the electric, eccentric energy of James Brown. Scrapbookers, beware: this is more than simple homage. It's a work that stands independently, with one hell of a soundtrack to boot!

I like good music writing -- it can be as lyrical and inspiring as the music it is about, albeit in another art form -- but sometimes, some music defies the written word -- Volk has worked hard here and brings us lots of facts -- but James Brown on this record in particular defies the written word -- all you can say is that some yowling and howling is so other-worldly that you gotta hear it to get it -- thanks for this valiant attempt -- but I think that after all is said and done, maybe words are not much help when it comes to this particular transcendent experience....

After dining at Michael Mina's at the Bellagio, I wanted to get my wife to recreate the experience of the Chef's Tasting Menu at home. Not all of it at once mind you.Most of his recipe's are available on his website including the Lobster Pot Pie - that was truly to die for. Although after the fantastic experience at the restaurant, I pitched in to get the book - the pictures in the book are beautiful which I do not think you get with the recipes on his website.My wife loves the book - although home cooks should be warned that the recipes are extremely detailed and require you to get your mise en place on. However, the results are outstanding - if you follow the recipe and use the exact ingredients.

If you've ever had the opportunity (or pocketbook) to dine in one of Michael Mina's restaurants, this book dissects some of their best dishes. I was eager to try some of them, but was a bit dismayed by the level of difficulty. I know, what was I thinking, right?Most of the recipes require a lot of prep time as well as ingredients and techniques not familiar with the home cook ( I have yet to find a grocery store that carries truffles). If you are looking for something elegant that you can whip up in a flash you may want to look into a different book.I did however, enjoy the book much more after dining in one of his restaurants. I actually received a signed copy of his book for free when I ordered the Chef's Tasting menu. Pretty cool, except that I paid over $400 for dinner for two!!!My favorite is the lobster pot pie - to die for. I guess you could substitute some of the steps such as the handmade crust, or even rolling it over the pot, but then it would not be an authentic "Mina" experience. if you have the skills to master any of the dishes, you will definitely wow your guests.As long as this book is not approached like a practical cookbook, you won't be disappointed.

This cookbook presents a trio concept of using a basic food treatment in three different presentations. For example, seared scallops with three different sauces and garnishes to be eaten as one meal course. An interesting idea, and the recipes are not too complicated. However, the format of how the recipes are presented is complicated and confusing.

There is not much to say apart from this book is inspiring and some great ideas in here. To prepare a complete dish is alot of work but the sub components work well for the creative home chef. I bought mine on the Amazon marketplace used.

This is a fantastic book. Michael shares his most famous recipes - the recipes are pictured and the instructions are written in an easy to follow manner. This book is not for a beginning cook but rather, for someone who enjoys a culinary challenge.

It looked used which was a bit disappointing, but it is in great shape and is very usable and it came on time.

My gift list includes a man who already has everything. He loves fine dining and creating gourmet meals using recipes from his hundreds of cookbooks. When he discovers a cookbook by a favorite chef, it goes on his wish list. As soon as he mentioned he'd seen Michael Mina's cookbook at Williams Sonoma, I looked into it. They were selling it for list price, $50. I was able to find the same book on Amazon.com for $31.50 - more than a third off list price. It arrived very quickly, too. This is a great way to purchase books.

My 17 month old has recently taken an interest in anything to do with animals, so when I saw this book, I decided to give it a try so I could read/show it to him. Overall, I am pleased with the book especially given that right now, it's free.Pros:- It has 50 pages of animals and animal facts. Granted, it's usually a 1-liner fact, but that's ok, it's intended for kids.- The pictures of animals are close up shots. Some of the books i've been reading to my son show the animal at a distance, or with other animals. This book, however, shows each animal solely so your child can easily distinguish which animal it is. There's also some funny looking shots of the animals.- It's a super easy read. If your kids are like my son, they're constantly throwing a book in your lap to read. I can zip through this book in about 4-5 minutes flat, getting it out of my son's blood for about an hour.Cons: (none. for the price, you really can't gripe about this book)To my 17 month old son, this book is awesome. He likes to try and make the various animals noises. Although, now I have a lot more to come up with given this book contains a lot more animals than his usual hard-back books. I would recommend this book to any parent looking to entertain their child with something other than a television.

I think this book could have been great, with some adjustments.PROS:- Beautiful pictures (the type you wish you could blow up and display on the wall). My favorite is the white horse running in the snow - gorgeous!- It includes a good variety of animal facts from all over the world.CONS:- The font is far too small to read without straining your eyes. You'll need to zoom in on every page that has the facts displayed.- Some of the images were't formatted properly to Kindle and span across 2 pages. (For example: hyena butt on one page, then the head on the next. That's great for print, but not for Kindle where you only see 1 page at a time).- While the facts are entertaining to read (for me as an adult), they are geared more toward 'big kids', and my son (8 years old in 2nd grade) lost interest on a lot of it since it's a lot of scientific terminology, etc.Overall, I do like this book, but it could be quite better with a bit of adjusting.*I only review products that I am genuinely interested in and have used, tested, tried. My opinion will always be 100% honest - if I love it, you'll know, if I don't, it will definitely reflect in my review. With that being said, I did receive this product at a discount in exchange for my honest review.*

I personally really liked this book. I see the criticism on some of the reviews, in regards to poor wording and so forth, unfortunately i don't agree. It gives many small facts, which in turn is easier for kids to memorize. When you over whelm a child with too much information they only retain about a 1/3. So in regards to that, i loved the small amount of information of each animal. The pictures, Oh My lets talk about the pictures. The pictures alone in this book are worth it alone. The photographer really captured the essence of each animal. They showed how beautiful animals are. I was enthralled as much as my daughter was on this alone. I was disappointed that the book was so short, but i understand that too big equals overwhelming as well. My daughter has had my kindle in her possession, ever since we read it. I also want to touch base about the organization. I see people talk about the organization of the book, when i opened on my iPhone Kindle app, it was super hard to follow. When i opened it on my kindle Fire HD, it was organized and beautiful. So all in all i hope that helps someone else, debating on whether to get the book or not. I give this book a huge thumbs up!!!!

This is a simple picture book for children featuring a number of animals. I'm not exactly sure what age it is aimed at because it's written and presented as a small children's book, but it throws in very scientific statistics, as well as the scientific names for each animal also each's higher classification.I've reviewed several books by this publisher and their kid's books seem to be their best offerings.
